(CNN) -- The University of Connecticut men's basketball team cannot compete for next year's national championship after the NCAA denied the school's appeal of a postseason ban based on its athletes' academic performance, the university said Thursday.
The Huskies earlier had been ordered to sit out the 2012-2013 NCAA tournament, because of its past players' sub-par Academic Performance Rate.
The University of Connecticut had appealed that decision from the NCAA, but to no avail.
"Before we even began this appeal process, the university and its division of athletics began to implement changes that were designed to positively impact the academic performance of our men's basketball student-athletes. We have and will continue to make adjustments designed to help these young men succeed," Connecticut Athletic Director Warde Manuel said in a statement.

I agree, cracking down on this will obviously let other schools whip their players into shape. they (should) be there learning too, although this isn't usually the case...

I think this whole thing is bullshit. I don't have a problem with the rule in itself, but they JUST made this a rule. The academic performance of past players should not affect the current players if this wasn't a rule previously. I would have no problem with the NCAA creating this rule and having it take effect 4 years from now, but why disadvantage players that came here before this rule was created.

By the way, the current team meets these standards, they're being forced out of post-season play because of the academic records of past players. UConn has players transferring and 2 players trying to decide if they should leave early for the NBA (even though they should stay another year at least) because of this rule. It's not fair to the current players who have done nothing wrong. Kemba Walker managed to graduate in 3 years with a good GPA.

I'm a little pissed cuz i'm a husky right now (im going to syracuse next year lol) but like was said up there this is because of past teams which is bullshit and will cause a bunch of players to leave next year. Also there teams like Kentucky that are all about just passing kids on after freshman year. Even if they do hold good gpa's anthony davis did not go into his freshman year thinking he was gonna stay for 4 years.

the only problem i have with this rule is that most division 1 sports teams and their athletes dont do their own school work anyway. so for a school to get banned from the tournament because of this either meant 1) their tutors werent doing good enough work for them or 2) they were actually doing their own work, or atlease more of it


not saying every single D1 team does this for them, but most. and you're kidding urself if you dont think its true

Honestly shut the fuck up. There's nothing I hate more than people who correct other people's grammar on the internet. Why do you care so much? When I post on a forum, I'm not writing an essay, I'm just writing what I'm thinking at the pace that I'm thinking it (kind of like when you talk to people in real life...you should try it some time). And guess what? No one in real life has conversations in perfect grammar. We all use colloquialisms, slang, and other forms of improper grammar. If you do speak in flawless grammar all of the time, you probably sound pretentious. So please, step down from your high and mighty internet grammar correcting pedestal. I will continue to use the wrong there/they're/their whenever it slips my mind or whenever I god damn feel like it while typing 60 words per minute and not give a fuck about it.

It's bullshit, for the reason's Fuckadelic cited.

The fact that they're punishing the 2013 team for what the 2008 team did is such shit. I agree that academics need to be stressed (it's called COLLEGE basketball for a reason) but its fucked up that UConn's getting dicked by the stupid grandfather rule. At least give them (us) a chance to change shit before you fuck them (us).

I read an article about Jim Boeheim speaking out about this, and it seemed that schools are punished pretty harshly for student-athletes that go pro before they graduate. I think that this is unfair...they should either force athletes to stay all four years or none at all. The one and done rule is fucking stupid in my opinion.

I am however, in agreement that these teams and "student-athletes" need to be held accountable to they same standards as all other students (even though this is obviously not true).
