Tax on Contributor Status

I was contemplating making a donation to NS and acquiring contributor status. I added it to cart (with nothing else), and noticed that tax is charged. Isn't NS Canadian owned? Even if it was a tangible item, I don't believe tax would apply to the US. Also, donator status is a contribution. Contributions (donations) are, as far as I know, always tax free. Would someone from NS offer some clarification please?

i believe mine was tax free, it has been awhile though.

To clarify, I have no problem with donating a bit more. I simply would like to know where this tax goes. Does it go to a government (US or Canada), or to NS? If to a government, why would a gift be taxed?

no expert on this, but I'd assume they are indeed taxable.

since NS isn't not-for-profit then donations are a sale and tax would need to be paid. I think they way it's set up is that a $10 donation already includes tax, so there's nothing extra on the part of the buyer. or maybe they're written off as gifts, in which case they wouldn't be taxable.

so ya, I'm sure tax is payed on them since I'm sure they're considered a purchase just like anything else. But I don't think you should be paying extra tax on top of what's included in the price. that must be an error. unless it's something country specific.

but really I have no idea what I'm talking about. so your guess is as good as mine.

the reason it is taxable is because it isnt a donation, ns is not a charity nor a non profit, which is also why they had to change it from donator to contributor status/forum/etc.

Except when I got mine 2 days ago it didn't tax me, so I'm pretty sure it just says it's going to and then it doesn't.

no there is not tax...in my case anyway. It is considered a paypal transaction and not an aquisition.

The tax goes away when you check out or what it's called. I thought the same thing, don't worry, the total will come out to the exact number for the donation ($5.00 in my case).
