My bike cost about 20 dollars used, and it's the best bike i have ever owned. I can go super fast or slow, thanks to my gears. Also buy your bikes used. Ive been riding 5 years no problems

applies to motorcycles because its suspension. Does not apply to bike if no suspension. Rear brakes are also more useful, as you can use it on sand etc.

Thats my local shop, where both the owners are sponsored fixed/track riders, than you have Wolfpack Hustle in the US. When they are sold in the shops, they generally have a front brake on them, hence making them legal... If you ride without one, I think your an idiot, because you arent riding on a track, but in the street, but you can explain how it makes it better to the dead kid I watched get hit by a car.

Regardless, Dont buy a fixed/track bike, you dont know what your doing, just get a lil hybrid, or single speed, dont waste the money.

The motoecanes, windsor hours, and kilos are all good starters.

and when you do buy it, take it to a shop to be built. Then after a few rides, take it again to be retightened, and tuned. This is one type of cycling that you dont want to risk.

i'm going to ignore everyone else here and say that my carbon fibre giant tcr race bike is the fastest thing on the road and suckas on fixies can't compete or even step to me. but if you want to ride around looking like a pufta buy a fixie it don't phase me.

So I get fixed gears on a track, but what is the possible advantage to one on the road? Is peddling backwards that fun?

Also I've never had a freewheel malfunction in my life so please don't use the no maintenance claim.

I'm honestly just curious as I've never ridden a fixed gear. Totally get the simplicity and clean look and feel of a single speed though?

There is not much of an advantage. I got one simply because of the exercise factors, along with simple maintenance, just because I'm not the best when it comes to fixing things, just breaking them. I dont want to screw with deraillers or pay the $75 + each time to get them tuned. I still love my road bike however, dont get me wrong.

I build/Fix vintage bikes, fixies and singlespeeds. Any specific questions about gear ratios, parts etc, PM me.

I just build a fixie ground up for $97... Yet, fixed gear projects can be in the thousands.

Be smart, don't ride a fixie just because you want to look like a hipster. if your city does not have straight roads (simply-put) A FIXIE WILL DO YOU NO GOOD. A single speed will serve you much better. FlipFlop hubs are great best of both worlds.

I own 2 fixies and a singlespeed. I'll take my singlespeed over my fixies any day but, fixies are super sick to cruise around on, chill with friends.

There's now way that it costs you 75 bucks. for just a rear derailer adjustment it's around 10 bucks everywhere. 75 would be for a basic or mid level tune up of the entire bike.

i think it's very amusing to read all the responses from the fixed gear enthusiasts talking about "whizzing" past spandexed road bikers. seems a little boastful and also not that impressive, considering spandex on a rider usually implies they've been riding for many more miles than your average messenger bag delivery.

in all seriousness though, riding a fixie must be very fun for some people. not for others. but i think we can all agree that they are super gay and only hipsters ride them for anal sex.

also, the low maintenance argument is so fucking lame, working on your bike is good for your soul.

fixies also really aren't that much lower maintenance. derailleur hangers bend very rarely and cables stretch every couple months to the point that they need to be replaced, but chains stretch easily and cogs wear out quickly, and fixies still have those. not to mention wearing rear tires to shreds doing skids and snapping vintage rare leather toe straps trying to dodge buses in traffic

road bikes are underrated. especially old ones. 80's - mid 90's road bikes are a steal as far as quality you get for the price they go for.

2 of my 4 bikes, the road, and the fixed gear. Also got a so so 1x9 mtb, and a 1x5 winter/rain bike.

1993, nothing stock but the brakes and front wheel.

40+ on a fixie? i wanna see the spedometer proof of that.

ive hit 50mph on my full carbon road bike and 40+ mph is shit your pants fast. i cant even fathom how fast your legs would have to be moving to keep up with your crank going 40mph.

yeah 40mph is crazy fast, i can only hit it on my road bike in a 53-11 gear going downhill and i ride almost everyday.

you could hit it on a fixed gear if:

1. you're an idiot
2. you're going down a huge hill
3. have some stupid gearing that makes anything under 25mph a pain in the ass making you an idiot again

i honestly thought the same thing until i started biking with my buddy who rides a fixed gear..kids a beast..mobs balls through salt lake city..one of the hilliest cities..no brakes (sounds reckless) but he's always in control..he climbs canyons on it too kids an animal
