I'm from Canada and in my province we have standardized testing. I have to say, looking back on the tests they're a complete joke, waste of time, and haven't really done anything for me in college. My government tests were all multiple choice except for social and English where half of the test consisted of a written component. Now that I'm taking science in college, I have NEVER had a multiple choice test yet on any final exam or mid-term(well except for my elective but that class doesn't count). Professors don't have a very limited budget + an overwhelming amount of tests to mark (every high school student in the province) so they can take the time to assess how much student's know properly.

The SAT shows significant correlation between scores and different socio-economic groups and it's sometimes argued that it has inherent racial bias. Many scholars argue that the original SAT was created to keep African Americans out of college.

good thing i don't brag about it. in fact, i prefer not to tell people in person out of respect in case they didn't perform as well as me or to a level that they expected themselves to perform at. am i gonna be a bit of a prick when someone's running their mouth because they didn't ace it even after taking the hardest classes and being such a genius? you can bet your ass i will.

i stated that without putting much effort in i got a respectable score without taking the hardest classes offered at my school. the sat is not a difficult test if you actually pay attention and think it through. tricky, yes. impossible, no. biased, yeah probably.

thats my view.  There's not really a good option to seperate students besides having them take a standardized test, and honestly I think its pretty fair.  Yes there are good and bad test takers, but bad test takers can spend a little time preparing and do well on the test, and hell if it isn't worth 20 hours of work to get a high score that could give you a much better or even a free education then you just don't have any work ethic to begin with, and you don't belong in college in the first place

IMO the SAT tests intelligence and classes test work ethic. I don't do my work and get C's and B's, but I do really well on tests and such because I'm intelligent.

This. It's such a loosely defined word that it doesn't really mean anything. IQ tests don't even test "intelligence". I say that because you can get much better at them through practice, and their biased so that a person with more experience has an advantage over a person with less.

I know a 14 year old in 8th grade math who scored a 650 on SAT. Plus how are you in Honors English and getting a 440 on SAT?

Maybe not necessarily intelligence, I just think it's a more fair reflection of your skills and knowledge than your grades in your classes.

The concept of "intelligence" is so multi-faceted and ambiguous that the idea of it being represented comprehensively by a number is a mistake. However, this doesn't mean that standardized tests are completely useless; at best they serve as a utility to gauge ones ability to overcome academic hurdles, however arbitrary they may be.

Is a person with a high score more eligible for university than someone with a low score because they are smarter or more intelligent? No; they are more eligible (in theory) because they were able to apply themselves within the academic context and achieve.

If you ask me, saying that SATs are completely useless is just as confused as saying that they are a perfect representation of a person's intellect.

I concur. I don't think they are useless, however they aren't a all-knowing prefect representation of their intellect. I was just saying I think standardized testing is a better representation than someone's grade in their classes.

I scored well, so theres no internally generated mistrust in sats aptitude measuring precision, but my brothers gf who is kind of a joke intelectually got a 1500 (when it was out of 1600). I also had a friend in college who got a 1550 who was dumb as fuck. Iq must be very weakly correlated with sat scores, from what i have seen in life

No its not a test of how affluent you are. Its a test that measures how much you have memorized word definitions and mathematical functions. I didnt take any prep or give a shit about anything besides science in hs but i still did well, so scores can signify ability but you can also be a fucking idiot who never stops studying and get a good score

Everyone says it is heavy on time management and test taking skills, and that is the reason it's bad? You need those skills in college, no? You guys are dumbasses. Look more into the meaning of it, not just the math/English/writing. It's designed to provide stress with the importance of it, the time constraints, the length of it. All of which happen when you're taking an exam in college. Trust me, I know. Taking the sat away is just taking another measurement tool that makes you different from anyone else

If you have shitty SATs I'd recommend just taking some responsibility and realizing that not everyone gets to drive with an 8 cylinder engine and some folks have to make do with 6 or 4. You probably also want to be at a college where other people have similar scores and you can work hard and get a 4.0 and good internships and connects and finish at the top of your class. I know that is hard to hear and its important to impress your parents and let them put a bumper sticker for a high end school on their mini van but if you are white and not a minority well tough shit you aren't smart enough for one of them.

Instead of crying about it and feeling inferior to people with better scores look within yourself to find your other strengths that compensate for not having off the chart book smarts/iq/natural intelligence. Or learn a trade. If you decide to become a mechanic or something at age 18 and are good at it and have an entrepreneurial drive by the time you are 25 you will own your own garage or be peoples bosses in one and make 40 bucks an hour. If you don't do this and do shitty in college you will have a ton of debt and then decide to be a mechanic when you are 24 meaning you'll be sitting in a class with 18 year olds and will not make decent money as a mechanic until you are 32. Thats just one example but life follows this pattern. Don't lie to yourself take responsibility. You are not smart enough to ace a standardized test like all caucasians and asians who attend good colleges do.

The dudes Im paying 15 bucks an hour to paint my new house are fucking awesome at all things construction and painting. It totally makes me feel unmanly to see how bad I am at DIY stuff compared to them. But that is their thing, its what they do for a living, and yeah its who they are they are awesome at doing construction and all blue collared work in general. I tried to get a painting job a few weeks ago to help pay the bills and tick along but it didn't come to pass but looking back I could have easily been fired the same day I was hired for not being good enough and made the friend who vouched for me to almost get that job look bad. I didn't need that job but it would have helped me get through June and July those months were rough I didn't leave the house really. Im normally fine at easy painting on houses but its not the same thing as being good at it if someone is paying you. Have to acknowledge ones strengths and weaknesses at all times I have my own stuff I am good at too.
