Travel around Central America

In May I'll be attending my school's group study program in Belize. While there I'll be working in everyday in the jungle with the howler monkeys and living next to the beach in Placencia. I've booked my flight out of Managua 3 weeks after the program ends and will be traveling with a group of 2 - 6 other girls. Our plan currently is to head straight into Honduras to take an intro scuba course at Utila then make our way down to Nicaragua.
To any of you who have traveled around Central America, I'm looking for recommendations on absolute must-sees in Honduras/Nicaragua/maybe El Salvador and Costa Rica. We're all pretty active/not afraid of dirt but we will have spent the last 3 weeks working pretty hard so we'll probably want to keep things low key. Good surfing, cool hikes, fun towns are perfect. Things need to be kept as cheap as possible because we're all broke college students so stuff like ziplining is out of the question. If you have any other travel advice I'm happy to listen to it.

Never been there, but that sounds so sick. Have fun and beware of the water. So jealous

Ive been to Costa Rica and took a tour of Nicaragua. We walked across the border from Costa, which I dont recommend doing unless you have an arranged guide. The lines to cross on both sides are tremendous. Nicaragua is beautiful though. I would try and go thru the city of Grenada. There are some sick old churches and remnants of their civil war (which only ended in the 80's). Lake Nicaragua is awesome too. You can rent a boat (with a driver) for an hour and tour the lake which is huge. It has 400 islands in it with all kinds of wildlife. A lot of the islands are owned by rich south Americans (coffee bean heirs, drug lords etc...)But be careful there, it can be shady. There is some real rich political history there about the Sandanistas, Ortega and the US govt.
Ill try and think of more places to go. I went a few years ago.

My girl's mom owns a condo in Belize. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. You're in for the time of your life, that's for sure.
