Should people be allowed to purchase and use guns

got to write an essay against this for Wednesday, can NS hook a guy up with some good argumentative points? i'm having a bit of writers block here and i cant think of any real reasons why someone shouldn't be allowed to own a gun.

"People" meaning "certain individuals", not "all people." It's only sound from a utilitarian standpoint which is not logically or philosophically valid. My post on the first page does a better job of describing the argument than my reply to his post. What do you think of it?

People should DEFINITELY be allowed to carry concealed weapons in public, as you said it's a tool, and there's no harm to anyone else unless the person operating it is a harm to other people.
Since kindergarten i've taken a 4" 'concealed' knife to school everyday, other than cutting my finger sharpening a pencil i've had a pretty good 20 year streak of not stabbing anybody. I'm pretty certain that if i were allowed to conceal carry a handgun i probably wouldn't go on any shooting rampages but i would sure appreciate the legal right to carry a piece of metal that shoots other chunks of metal out of it and be able to carry it anywhere I want.

Gun-control laws do not control crime because crimes are not committed by guns; they are committed by criminals. Criminals will always have guns because they do not obey laws, including anti-gun laws. Those without guns are easy prey for criminals with guns. Gun control encourages crime.

The right to bear arms was included in the Bill of Rights, not to deter crime, but to deter oppressive government. Just governments honor and protect the right to bear arms. Oppressive governments fear and prohibit the right to bear arms.

Guns are dangerous. The only thing more dangerous is not having them.

just something to think about.If you ban guns, law abiding citizens will follow the law, however evil people that are willing to use guns for the wrong reasons will still find a way to find firearms. Think about the Va. Tech situation, that guy was willing to do what he did, do you really think that getting a firearm illegally would stop him. I own plenty of guns and I use them responsibly. I either go to BLM land or to a range and shot or use them while hunting.

Write your essay from the viewpoint that guns should be in vending machines in every building, in case somebody looks dangerous, because that is just cause to shoot them. Keep going on about killing everything until youre sure your teacher will suspect you to have guns in your locker, because he/ she could be looking for some guns for protection too

but then the only people who would stop carrying are the lawful citizens who carry for self defense. thugs and gangsters are sill going to carry their guns because NWA has been telling them to fuck the police since they were babies. taking the guns out of the hands of lawful people makes them more powerful in the hands of criminals.

i would guess the county with almost times the population to have more instances of it happen.

silly Canadian is silly

and dare i say. that the usa is much more diverse then canada.? if have not noticed. some people in this world do not like other people.

I believe that if you want to buy a gun you should be required to take the MMPI. My uncle was shot and killed by a close friend of his because the man was mentally ill. I severely doubt this will ever happen because of the outcry from gun enthusiasts but I think if this was put in effect we could do away with the one week waiting period.


What I really believe, and I know this will never happen, is that hand guns/easily concealable small firearms should be banned. The way this idea was explained to me was if someone was planning on doing something they couldn't just walk down the street in broad daylight hiding a gun in their coat. It's pretty easy to spot the guy walking down the street with a rifle or shotgun

This is per 100,000. So proportional to population. And population size has nothing to do with it. Look at a country like Colombia with a fairly similar population to Canada's yet no gun control whatsoever and the highest gun crime in the world.

And you dare not say. The US is not more diverse than Canada.

Looking at the most basic of these statistics, 12.6% of the US population is foreign born while in Canada it's 19.8%. These statistics are from 2007 and 2006 respectively.

It's hilarious that the response to gun crime by Americans here is to put more guns in the hands of more people. Why not talk about education or changing the gun/violence culture in the US? More guns or less guns I don't think anything will really change until this issue is dealt with.

Anathema is pretty spot on. The "guns don't kill people, people kill people" argument is a bit narrow. The amount of "normal" confrontations (party fight, domestic argument, job firing, etc) that could turn into deadly altercations with guns readily available doesn't sit comfortably with me. The line between law abiding citizen and criminal isn't as clear as you all make it sound, we all have our moments of complete insanity, I'd prefer most people don't have a gun at their hip while experiencing them.

I do believe in the 2nd Amendment though, the gov scares me more than fellow citizens do.

no you could say that is the USA;s fault cause here in the USA we use up to 70% of the worlds drugs. and if it was no for our huge demand for good hard drugs people around the world would not be doing them

just saying, the reason people called the states a melting pot isn't because they retained strong cultural attitudes. it was actually the exact opposite, all the different and unique cultures just blended together into one, homogenous american culture. people changed it in the last few decades to try to make it mean multiculturalism, but even now, if you think about it, when you throw a bunch of things into a melting pot, they don't exactly retain their form, it all just becomes one big mess.

to say United States is more multicultural than Canada is ridiculous. I mean just look at Toronto. Our largest city is 47% visible minorities and about 50% foreign born.

Also, I made a mistake with the gun homicides per 100,000. I was looking at the overall homicide rate per 100,000.

So here are the actual firearm homicides per 100,000

United States: 2.97 (overall is 4.55)
Canada: 0.54 (overall is 1.58)
Colombia: 51.77 (0verall is 62.75)

yes, Colombia is an unfair example. But one could use about any country. go find Russia's rates. compare them to England's.

but the important statistic for this is the % of homicides committed using a firearm.

United States: 65
Canada: 34

this is directly related to the ease of access to firearms.

If Obama is able to send troops to kill «Terrorists» who aren't very dangerous in US, we should be allowed to wield guns.

Use guns for your pleasure and for your survival expeditions.

But what about the everyday citizen that just carries it for self defense? I might not have much to say here, but I have like 6 relatives that always carry pistols on them. They obviously have all the licenses, but they only load them with hallow points. They're not designed to kill, so what if that was made a law? You can have a concealed weapon, but only with non-lethal bullets?

You could still say that a hallow point can kill with the right shot, but you can kill somebody with a hammer to?

Hollow points aren't designed to kill? That's exactly what they were designed for. Not in a military sense because they can't do shit to body armor but hollow points leave massive exit wounds. Why do you need a gun for self defense? Carry some pepper spray and a switchblade

what if you get mugged by a guy with a gun? whats your switchblade going to do for you in that scenario? by making guns illigal, you take them out of the hands of citizens who use them for self defense. criminals will have gun regardless of the legality, and if the ciminals have them and civilians do not, them youre simply empowering criminals.

Well i guess that wasnt the best example up there, but they do live in shitty areas. Having guns isnt necessarily for their own protection, but for the people around them. Sometimes the everyday joe has to step up and play hero, as long as he or she knows what theyre doing it can be effective. And 1337, not all of them can afford to move, they have jobs and families there. As long as theres scumbags in the world, theres always going to be people to stop them. Unfortunately, the scumbags have access to the same things the good guys do. And i dont believe in taking away a citizens rights no matter what. Something has to change, but i dont think its going to happen for a while.

Then you give him your or whatever, let him run off and call the police, lawyer, insurance company, gangster friend of yours, whatever. Or you could pull out your gun, start a firefight and very easily get yourself and the mugger killed.

I'm willing to bet that most gun related VIOLENCE happens between criminals anyways. Allowing all ordinary citizens to have guns is stoking the fires of the George Zimmerman's of the world.

In the UK-
Very little serious gun crime which occurs only in minority areas
Police don't carry guns
Gun control legislation is extremely strict and requires licences
Homicides are at 0.07 per 100,000
Fully Automatic weapons and Self Loading weapons higher then .22 rimfire are totally banned


And I feel that the legislations and attitude of the people in the UK lead to a relatively safe country with little use of guns. I could walk nearly every street in the country at anytime without the fear of being shot.


Just a different point of view from a country with guns only used for sport such as hunting (fox), shooting (birds) and stalking (deer)

you just made no since, so call my gangster friend who probably as an illegal gun that was stolen and that he carries without a permit, to kill the mugger.

or I can have a firearm on my person and successfully wound the person who his trying to rob me.



many people dont understand that most people who get their CCW have prior gun use/knowledge. and to get the permit you have to take a class that is multiple days in the class room and also out on the range.
