Hey guys, what's up?

I have outgrown my T2i in the photo aspect of things.
the main things I don't like about it are its low-light performance and faster (FPS) would be ideal

I see my options as this,
1) Get a new photo body (5dc?, 40d/50d?) and keep the t2i for video
2) Sell the T2i and get a 7d or 5dii(hopefully the price drops with the 5diii?)

but i don't new a whole lot about the canon line in terms of photo stuff, so that is where i seek your input.

budget is at about $1k, or that plus t2i(~$450?)

What lenses are you using? a good fast lens can really change low light situations for you

found a 5dII locally for $1475 today, you can look around and try to hop on a deal. Lowlight they are pretty incredible, and FF is awesome for photos

i mean, with a good 1.4 lens you barely have to worry about iso.

the 5d2 would be nice but youre going to lose 720p60 and wont be able to tamron? i cant remember if its ef-s or not. Doesn't the 60d have decent lowlight?

60d/7d/t2i all have the same sensor, but im not sure which one has the best processing. I hear the 7d has noise issues at low isos, not sure if its high iso's are much better.

I'd love to suggest you a 1d III or something like that, but your budget doesnt allow for it :\

you're right about the tamron, it's not compatible with anything bigger than APS-C, according to B&H
so that pretty much gets rid of the full frame option, i don't think i'll have the money to change up my lens setup as well

I mean i understand you want more fps and better low light but you might need to just settle for now :/ you could pick up a 40d for mad cheap for better photos/faster fps but i think the t2i has better sensitivity.

if i were to pick up a FF body, what would be a good lens to replace the tamron?

^ and get the 5dmkii? the af is much better on the 7d and ef lenses are pretty expensive. the ff will most likely give you one extra stop, i dont think its worth it. the t2i is a great camera

like some of my recent star stuff i would have loved to close down the lens a little to keep some of the fg stuff in focus, but didnt want to bump the iso because of noise
or, when i was shooting the teva games, pretty much all of my night stuff was unusable because of noise, even when i was shooting with flashes or had my lens at f2.8 ( i do plan on getting an ab b800, which would help with that stuff, too)

higher FPS would be great, too

If you wanna replace the tamron..If you have the money, the canon 17-40 or even better, canon 24-70. The 24-70 is basically the same focal length as the 17-50 on your t2i, except it will be on a FF.

like I said in our PM's (so other people who might look at this thread can know too) Faster glass might be the only option. If you can't adjust your ISO or shutter, then its the aperture that has to move.

why wouldn't you just go 60d? is the lowlight no better?

no significant improvement. Pixel peepers may tell you one or the other (and my guess would be a 60/40 split favoring the 60d) but with the same sensor and similar processors, you won't see even a 1/3 stop improvement in noise.

Do you have ML on your card Sklar? Intermediate ISO's might help if you cant jump from, say 1600 to 3200, but maybe 2000 would work.

at the least the body and burst would be a lot better though.

Okay well as a Canon 60d owner I can tell you that the only real improvement from the t2i is a slightly better autofocus system (9 cross-type points) as well as a few more FPS. In terms of IQ the differences are not noticeable unless your a dedicated pixel peeper.

I'd say your best bet would be a 7d. It's noise performance is pretty good, a bit better than the t2i. It will give you better speed and the IQ overall is definitely better than my 60d, and way better than a t2i. 7d has dual digic 4 processors which in theory should help with noise performance and IQ; T2i and 60d only have 1. 100% view finder, magnesium body, and CF cards are all nice as well.

At the end of the day though it comes down to how well you know how to use your camera, a professional will get better results out of a Rebel Xt than a newb would out of a 1dx with L lenses. I've seen your work and I'd say an upgrade would help, you have a good glass setup and have the cash to do so. 7d's can be found used for not that much more than a new 60d.

On a side note do you have any off camera flash equipment, it can be really helpful in low light and way more helpful than fast glass if you want everything in focus like you mentioned.

D7000 slays the 5dII in lowlight/cleanliness, and it's crop sensor. It also has a way better metering system. $1k new.

Good choice. You can get a good flash setup for relatively cheap, amazon has a ton of off brand stuff.

Tamron 28-75 is a really good performer. Pretty much the 17-50, but then for FF as well.

As far as bodies go: 1D mkIIn. I can't believe anyone hasn't said this yet. Fuck high ISO, just fix that shit in post. I don't know how the 550D and 1D's ISO's would compare to each other buy I don't think they'll be very different.

EDIT: Indexed numbers of both camera's show that the 1D's noise is quite a bit better than the 550D. Not to mention it has 2 card slots, 8.5fps, a pentaprism instead of pentamirror, 100% coverage and 1/8000 shooting for those rare occasions when you need that!

well, I decided that i'm going to stick with what I have now and upgrade my glass/save until I find a good body option, and have the money for it
I played with a 5diii in a store the other day, and damn, it seems real nice

Can imagine so. If I'd have lenses with AF I'd certainly be getting a 1D mk II(n). I was about to pick one up (30k actuations) and 4 batteries for 500€, but decided not to. Even though it was a great deal. I probably should have and if I didn't like it, I could always have sold it with 200€ profit...
