Making this thread because I almost had a chance to go to one of the biggest camera trade shows, and am super bummed I won't be there to see some sweet stuff dropped. Like this:

Sony is planning to drop a 4k FS700, with built in ND's, high FPS recording (120, 240, 480, 960! at reduced resolutions...), e-mount, all for ~8,000 USD. Expect it to look similar to the fs100.

Canon has been extremely quiet about their 4k Cinema DSLR, but they have released two invites to screenings and a release dinner/briefing the night after. Not much is know about its features/fps/price, but expect it to be more than the 1dX, and less than the c300. Although they'll probably blow it again...

Zeiss is supposed to be releasing their own 70-200 2.8. I have no doubt it will be a fantastic lens, but also an expensive one

In previous years, NAB has been home to the release of some of the most innovative equipment in the camera industry. Please remember though that THESE ARE JUST RUMORS as of right now. They could be slated for a later release date, or be some kind of april fools joke. But hey, they are cool concepts! :)

so in my case everything is a good camera..........................................................


but on a serious note. that would be sweet if canon made a 4k DSLR if and only if it was equipped and geared more toward video with the basics like meters, levels, timecode, hdmi out, maybe even built in ND filter? and myabe an xlr input or two. basically where the 5D mk iii is going, but better.

and for the sony FS700...that looks like its gonna be a fuckin awesome camera if it works smoothly with its external record box thingy

Black magic, known for their high quality external recorders, releases a 2.5k resolution, RAW recording, 13 stop DR camera for under 3k USD. Releases in july.

Nothing has gotten me very excited so far, until i saw this....

Black Magic Deisgn 2.5K raw camera...12bit RAW CinemaDNG or 10bit ProRes or DNXHS... for $2995... it uses EF lenses (sick for canon users) and i HOPE HOPE HOPE it works with nikon lenses too...

i just saw this yesterday and would have to agree. it looks like it could be very sweet. only complaint i would have by just looking at the stuff out now is the ergonomics. and it sounds like its completely touch screen? but im sure there will be many attachments from 3rd party places to add to it.

overall, very very cool. to me this blows away the pos canon 1d cinema slr or whatever

It;s in the press release. The writeup doesn't talk frame rates and the press release saves it for the very end because I'm sure they knew people would be disappointed by it.

If the processor is fast enough it shouldn't be too difficult to add 60p into the camera. They may be "limiting" the camera intentionally though. WHo knows what their marketing plan is, but it seems like they hardly limited the camera at all. 2.5k Raw with 13 stops of dynamic range is insane. The test videos were not amazing and specs don't mean everything but the dynamic range was very evident in the beach test video.

Either way this will fuel competition from canon, Panasonic, and sony. Black Magic took the budget cinema camera war places that the big 3 thought they could avoid for years. This camera certainly has its shortcomings: framerates, lowlight (say goodbye to shooting anywhere over 800iso relatively clean), an internal battery that lasts 90 minutes and needs to be recharged, and a smaller sensor than people are used to (this just means a person with a solid prime lens set now have completely different focal lengths).

Despite all of these things they absolutely SHAT on the competition. I'm waiting canon/panny/sony. Let's see your answer.


As far as me buying it? Nope, not yet. I feel a revolution coming on in the Sub-$5,000 camera market. I'd rather perfect the rest of my kit before upgrading bodies. Let's be honest, none of us have truly outgrown our current cameras if you're shooting on anything modern. Take a step back and think to yourself "will this camera make me a better cinematographer".

The answer is no. Lenses, a real tripod (not a Manfrotto 501/702/503 sorry), and good sound are going to impact your final product a ton more than some extra resolution and dynamic range will.

Exciting times though!

And they throw in DaVinci Resolve! (if you want to get really in-depth with your color correction/grading)

When one can't even get a smooth pan/tilt simultaneously it does limit a persons ability to execute proper camera movements.

yeah that's why i said i know what you mean. those things allow you to get better images, but they don't make you a better cinematographer. just being a stickler for phrasing i guess

This thread is now about BlackMagic stealing the show.

The only immediate downsides I see are:
1. Internal battery. Just plain awful idea considering how easy it is to instill a supplemental one.
2. EF mount. Considering the sensor size, a Canon mount is possibly the least logical choice.
3. SSD drives must be Mac formatted.

Things I love:
1. Near-native sensor output. Aliasing/moiré are nonexistent. Hello deep focus!
2. Sensor size. Being between s16 and m4/3, this is a far better sensor than s35 or FF in my opinion. Still lenses suck for video. With a smaller sensor, you can adapt back-focusing vintage cinema lenses! Silky smooth focus rings, metal construction, and not having to refocus when you zoom!
3. 13 stops of DR at 12-bit RAW. This is huge. High DR at 8-bits is like being granted unlimited sex in exchange for castrating yourself (*cough*Canon*cough*). Not only is Black Magic doing it right by giving BOTH necessary specs, but they're doing it in RAW.
4. Based on the samples, overall image feels very organic. Low light looks phenomenal; much better than the DSLR stuff I've seen. Dark scenes actually look dark with tight tonality. None of that bright, punchy crap that's been stretched to look like daylight (5D).


I'm a bit torn on the ergonomics. On one hand, I feel that a "cube" design is incredibly practical, second only to the Aaton "cat on shoulder" design. Also the touch screen is an obvious advantage in terms of packing many functions into a small area. On the other hand, I much prefer being able to physically turn metal knobs and flip metal switches (forget those crappy plastic buttons on Sony cameras). However this would increase the weight and size tenfold, and still wouldn't be able to serve a purpose when entering metadata.


Overall this is the most revolutionary thing I've seen since RED ONE. As I see it, Black Magic is scavenging off of RED's abandoned promise of 3K for 3K. Not to mention that Black Magic is a company with an excellent reputation that actually SHIPS its products (take note, RED). However, I'll likely wait until the second generation when they work out all inevitable kinks. In the meantime, it's hard to beat the GH2's weightlessness, bitrate, and telephoto reach when it comes to lapping big mountain lines on skins.

1. Internal battery - yup, blew it on that, but thankfully there is a rather flexible input voltage range, and a lot of the guys on DVXuser were suggesting using 16.8V drill batteries, which are cheap, reliable, have 30 minute hyper chargers, and are easy to come by.

2. EF mount - agreed, blew it on this. Would have been better with an m43 mount, seeing that all those lenses are MEANT for a 2x crop.

3. Mac formatted SSD's - there are workarounds to this, plenty of freeware that lets you read/format/write a Mac Journaled partition
