Runners of NS/Official Running Thread/Running Questions

About 2 months ago I started running very regularly, I got my body in the habit of running 4-5 days a week. Now I decided to take it a little further and go for a full Marathon. 2 months ago, my first time running in a long time I ran a mile with a 9'57 pace. A few days ago I ran 8 miles with a 9'34 pace.
Has anyone else tried this before?
Also, what are some of your favorite songs to listen to while running? I need to start expanding my playlist for these longer runs.
Also, if anyone else wants to join me, I'm shooting for an October marathon. Don't know where yet, but it seems like it will be kind of a big deal so I'd be willing to make a trip out of it. We could have a NS team.

I ran my first marathon back in November (Philadelphia). My first half was pretty much on pace with my goal (4 hours, which is 9:10 miles or so). My legs completely gave out between miles 19 and 22 though, and I lost half an hour trying to get them back into working order. I think my official finish time was 4 hours, 35 minutes or something like that. I used to run for my high school, and my mile was 4:53, but that was years ago.

Anyway, any questions or whatever feel free to PM me or whatnot. I think I'm doing the 20in24 race July 12th or so in Philly.

Oh, and what kind of shoes do you have? I've been looking at all these "barefoot" options. I should probably see someone who works at a good shoe store

I am curious about this too. I need to get a new pair of running shoes. I have always bought Asics. I used to get nikes but they fell apart too easily. I switched to Asics, never gone back.

anybody have any experience with compression calf sleeves?

i'm a crossfit person but i do a lot of running and jumping and running in weighted vests and my calves hate me lately. waiting on a pair of sleeves to arrive today actually but i'm just wondering if anybody has tried them

Ive been considering those.

And since I've started running, I got to bed earlier and wake up a lot earlier. It feels a lot more productive, plus everyone's nicer when you go places in the early morning.

i bought some compression socks and i wear them during races but also to bed and they really help to get your calves back, i would highly recommend them!

as for the barefoot option dont try starting out to quick otherwise your legs will most likely injured, you have to work your way into the barefoot shoes over time by alternating between them and other running shoes.

i love running though idk why but there is something fun about the pain and suffering. Im in track right now and got my mile time down to 4:39 and im hoping to make it to state this year!

I ran a half marathon in an 1:53 without training. I do try to go for runs atleast twice a week though.

Ya a lot of the sprinters on my track team use them and swear by them. I've never tried them so I can't speak from personal experience but if I had to guess, I'd saythat you're gonna like them. On another note. FUCK YAAAA finally broke the 52 second barrier for the 400 that I've been aiming for! Epic level of stoke. Im a sophomore in high school and this is only my second year running. No one gives a ahit but fuck you I'm very happy right now, and I'm running the open 4 at the broomfield meet in a couple hours. Stoke!

yeah, as a high school student, i have just started track this week, i running distance... this is the first year i have run instead of laxin, but i do XC so it should be fun...

My PR mile is 5:15, post yours up...

I never got an official best mile, but when I played hockey I know I could do it in under 7. In these past couple months my best is 8'07, but I've been focusing more on distance. I should try a quick mile one of these days

when I ran track freshman year in highschool I ran a 5:29 mile. I dont remember the last time I ran, but I have a hard enough time getting myself to work out. maybe its time for a change.
with that said,

does anyone here trail run?? I find running on the road lame, I'd rather just drive. I have access to some nice MTB trails that I was thinking about running this summer.

I work in a specialty running store, and I run A LOT. I think I can help you there.

Barefoot is a good thing, but I would NOT recommend it to you right now. To be able to wear those barefoot shoes properly and without injuring yourself, you need to have proper stride efficiency, aka running mostly landing on your forefoot. the thing is, running at a pace under 7min/mile, it is easy to modify your technique so you can do so. At your pace, the impact you generate on your body is much more important because your rhythm isn't so «dynamic». I would suggest to you to stick with regular shoes or light trainers (which are like regular shoes, minus a bit of absorbant which makes them lighter, look up Asics ds-sky speed or speed star) until your first marathon. Then, if you like the experience and want to pursue running, you can go out and try some barefoot shoes.

Sparknotes: do not try barefoot shoes before achieving your marathon dream because it can really fuck you up if it's not done properly, and there's chances you won't be able to run your marathon.

i'm planning on running one of these in september in new hampshire. can't wait.

also, my shoe of preference is the nike free run 2+, but i'm looking to get the 2012 free run 3's.

last week, i ran a 5k with my girlfriend in 23:50, so like sub 8-minute miles.

op doing my first marathon in november....NYC marathon. I entered the raffle to get in hopefully hear back soon i really want to get in. Im in pretty good shape right now could easily do a 10-15 mile run no problem. I think that when it comes down to it its mind of body in these type of things. OP if your doing the NYC marathin in november hit me up id be so down to run with someone

for the average person to get in its like a 1 in 3 chance or something like that. But there are ways to get in easier, like theres some running series in the city if you do all the races you get auto entry in the marathon, or if you run for a charity and raise money you can get in. I just wan tto get in normally though dont have time for the races and i dont want to raise money.

ahh i miss running so much!! during the fall in the cross country season i think i got my 5k down to a 22:20ish. It was such a fun race because there were trenches of mud in the woods and girls would be falling face first.

Anyway Im thinking of getting a new pair of sneakers. I run with asics right now which are alright but i think i want to switch it up.

I'd be careful on those minimalist shoes, such as the nike frees. I got a stress fracture this year in cross country from regularly running in them. It was that year that i got 17:16 5k too, i was pretty mad afterwards, because of my stress fracture.

i personally would never buy the minimalist or barefoot design running shoe if you are going to be on pavement. i think they are meant for trail or grass running.

i've recently started working on distance running. i was a sprinter in high school so i never did anything long distance except for playing soccer. it seems pretty tough to train different muscles when you have been out of high school for 8-9 years.

I never had any real running shoes, but I recently bought Brooks Adrenaline shoes from theclymb. they are super comfortable and i felt great on the first run i did with them.

I have seen people run half marathons in those barefoot shoe things and saw a guy whose feet were bleeding after mile 7.

BAREFOOT SHOES ARE GARBAGE UNLESS YOU RUN UNDER 3 MILES!

That being said, go to a running store and ask them about what shoes to get for a marathon. The will do tests on your feet and find the perfect shoe. Dont be afraid to pay a $100 or so for your shoes because it is well worth it.

Are any one on NS running the Marine Corps Marathon of the Richmond VA half Marathon?

Ran 5k in 19:00 flat the other day. I was pretty happy with that, but also rugby season just started again and we do a ton of cardio in practice. I usually run like 5k 3-4 times a week and sometimes the best part of the day is my morning run.

ran the layton, UT marathon last fall, so damn fun and very obtainable. One thing i wish i had done differently is track my splits. I always just tracked my average miles from total times but when you hit mile 20 it's nice to know if you're pace is slowing or if you can slow down. I don't buy into all the barefoot hype. I read born to run like every other distance runner and I don't see how it advocates barefoot like everyone says. makes it seem like if you're a lanky ethopian running on grass you should barefoot and if you're a healthy weight american running on sidewalks you should wear shoes. I'm sworn by asics forever though, depending on your foot, they're worth checkin out.

by far the most comfortable/durable/supportive shoe on the market.

i was a more of a sprinter, but i did run a sub 5 minute mile (4:56) and i did run a 2:02 800m, and i did run a 51 second 400m, and i did run a 37.2 second 300m(indoors) and i did run a 40.3 300h, and i did run a 15.4 110hh, and i did run a 11.1 100d, and i did jump a 21' 4'' long jump, and i did jump a 6'0'' high jump and i cant remember my triple jump.


oh and i ran a 21.9 second 200m.

yeah not all the best times, but find someone that has PR's this good in all these events.

Sick dude! im trying for the same thing this season, but im stuck at 53 seconds on my 400m. trying to break 2:10 in my 800m this season too and 17flat in my 5k next xc season.

Back in the day I could run the 5min easily. I haven't even put those shoes on in over a year though. Be lucky if I could run 5miles at a 10 min pace.

Might just start doing it again though!

started running back in January...such a great way to clear your mind and get rid of a lot of stress at least for a little while...running a 5K in about 2 weeks, goal is 22 minutes or under but im not sure i can get it

I've started running to get in shape for drum corps. I can sprint like a mofo but I'm absolutely terrible at distance running... Hoping to fix that by summer.

This may sound crazy but for you guys looking at buying new shoes, I would recommend gong to a professiional running store. Getting a running shoe is kinda like getting a ski boot, you want to get the one that fits you best especially if you are running long distances like a full or half marathon. Everybody hits the pavement differently and good running shoes are made for the different way that your foot hits. Also getting fitted into a good shoe helps with he lack of blisters you will get. For my first 5k run I went out and bought the shoes that looked cool to me, but I did not like them at all. When I started training for my first half I went and got fitted and he pair tht I got were socanies (I think that's how u spell it) an they fitted and felt great. They took all of my training and the race and still had some km left on them. Hope this helps !

I have them too.. they are super comfortable... but i think you must just keep in mind that you choose a pair with a quite thick sole otherwise it's bad for the knees....
also where i live they aren't available anymore... wanted to get a new pair..... sucks :(

these are trash, i highly suggest not buy them. they arent durable and only work as they are supposed to if you run under 3 miles

If you are just starting running do not buy barefoot shoes. Unless you are just going to be running on grass once or twice a week, barefoot running shoes are not a good idea for a beginner (or anybody training high mileage). The muscles in your feet and legs are not developed and if you are trying to train for a marathon, I can almost guarantee you will get injured. Especially if you plan on doing any running on hard surfaces. If you have any running specific stores around you, go over there and have them check out your foot and stride. The shoes will probably be more expensive there, but its good to get put in a shoe by people who know their stuff and then just buy in bulk online. A lot of times they'll have you run on a treadmill and film your foot strike.

Aside from that, respect for stepping up to such a big race. My words of advice would be to be very careful. Going from not running to a marathon can be pretty risky. Never jump up too much from week to week in terms of miles. A good rule of thumb is not to jump up more miles than days you ran the previous week. So if you ran all 7 days last week you could bump up 7 miles, but even that is pretty high. Last summer for example my plan was to do something like 65,70,70,75,75,80,85,85,85, and then hold from 90-100 miles a week till fall. Even being that gradual I still managed to get hurt, and I had been averaging about 75-80ish the previous 12 months.

Obviously, take anything anybody tells you with a big grain of salt. I mean I do a lot of serious training, but have never really put together that good of a career. And there's going to be a lot of bad info out there.

I can't wait to do a marathon, but I'm probably going to hold off until I'm about 26 when my body is ready to handle it. I've seen to many of my teammates try to jump right into marathons after college and destroy themselves and their running careers. And these guys were DIII national champs. That year our team would have placed top 25 at division I national champs in cross.

sorry for double post, not too often there's a running thread on here. I invested in some "recovery socks" about a year ago and I really like them. After a 15+ miler on pavement your calves are pretty torn up. Wearing the recovery socks the rest of the day and overnight though really helps the blood keep moving, and by the next day you're definitely ahead of where you would have been otherwise.

fun fact about running I learnt today: in 1912 some japanese dude fainted during a marathon in sweden and some farm family found him and he was so ashamed he left the race without notifying anyone and was considered a missing person then like 54 years later they found him and called him up and asked him if he wanted to finish the race so it took him 54 years and something to finish a marathon and now that's the record.

I'm not exactly sure, it might have only been the second year they ran it but it was well done. We started towards the bottom of antelope island and ran just before dawn until mid morning across the causeway and into layton. it's definitely pretty small though, not even 1000 runners total which i liked
