Was this base weld done properly?

Hello everyone,
A few weeks ago i got a fairly big sized core shot skiing. Knowing that normal p-tex would not last in the gash, i took them into the shop. They charged about $50 for the repair. After about a week of skiing on them i noticed the weld started to crack a bit(not from a rock or impact related). So basically my question is, is this normal? If not, should i go back into the shop and see what they can do about it?

Any helpful feedback is very much appreciated!

That picture is tiny, but a proper base weld should be completely indistinguishable from the rest of the base other than the color. It looks like they just used a ptex candle.

damn $50 holy fuck you got ripped off. i got a huge core shot on my laroses way bigger than that only $5 i guess when they are wanting to make bank they charge the shit out of it

This is what I was thinking. When you do a baseweld, you have to stonegrind the skis after, then set the edges and wax. There is more to it than just dripping a ptex candle into a hole.

what? 1950 called, they want their tech shop rates back. 50 bucks is less than a standard tune at the two respectable shops in my town.

That looks very much like a plain old ptex job... just how it looks to me though.

That's definitely plain ptex. On a base weld, they remove the base around it and cut out a shape, and just put a new piece of base material in it, and make it flush with the rest of the ski. It won't crack, do you definitely just got a ptex drip in that

Wow. I'd be livid if I were you. That crack makes me believe it's P-tex in there. It runs a dollar per stick, and they MAYBE used half a stick to fill that.

Even if they did do a proper base weld, 50 dollars is absurd.

thanks for the help everyone.

sounds like i got ripped off, im taking the skis in today to get my money back, if i cant get it back i learned my lesson not to get ski repairs at sports authority

Ya that looks like P Tex but 50 for a proper base weld is not absurd.

You need to think of all the stuff that goes into a base weld (stone grind, edges, wax) plus the actual base weld itself. It takes quite a lot of time so labour charges make it fairly expensive.

Agreed, a proper base weld is well worth 50 bucks. You essentially end up with a full tune once all is said and done.

Yeah, every shop I took then into said it would be about $50. I am okay paying that if the work is done proper however the work was not done proper and it shows how bad of a shop they are running.

Huh. That really surprises me.

The one time I took my skis in for a base weld on a 11.5 inch coreshot, I was only charged 15 bucks.

I'm not joking about the 11.5 inches either... my ski caught the rock, stopped, I ejected over the handlebars, and had to hike back up and remove my ski from the rock. Big Sky is brutal sometimes.

that shit blows man. i'd be fucking pissed, thats why i'm the only one to touch my skis. learn how to do that yourself man, and learn the right ways of tuning/matinence/mounting and it will go a long way and save you a lot of money. never know what stoner snowboarder fuck is trying to mount your skis.

It really pisses me off how big shops think that they can just cover it a little bit and not notice! Whenever I get my skis done or edged I generally always take it too a locally owned ski shop.

no joke, I used to be a tech there me and my buddy were the only one's that worked on skis that had ever skied or boarded. pathetic excuse for a store.
