Moving to Jackson & Looking for Input From YOU!

So my buddy(s) and I are thinking a little time away from the terrible midwest is in order. We all love the JH area, and as it sits right now, its top on the list. I have some ?s regarding living out there.

-Housing, how expensive are we talking for a 2-4 bedroom house? Are there 'cheap' housing options anywhere w/in a reasonable distance. Is there an area that is cheaper/shittier/more friendly towards people in their mid 20s?

-Anybody need a roomate or 2?

-Jobs? Seems like most of the things I have been seeing are for the teton lodge and other type of hotel/resort jobs. Anyone have a hookup or connection for a business that need a hard working, ball busting guy that loves life?

-Id love to hear input from anyone and everyone!

my brother lives out there with a bunch of his college buddies. Most of them work for the mountain as lifties or whatever but he lucked out and works at a nice skishop in town called hoeback sports which looked pretty dope when i went out to visit him. Some of them work at hotels and bitch about it but a jobs a job. As far as rent/housing they live in like a pretty nice 3 maybe 4 bedroom but they've crammed 8-9ppl in to help with rent but it came with a huge comfy leather sectional couch and a nice flatscreen. I think they lucked out tho i'm not sure that is typical

my old roommate lives in driggs and skis at jackson and grand targhee. He doesn't seem to mind it but I've heard dif. opinions on it. I know it's much cheaper living and it's worth checking out

Word, Ive looked into that, but it seems a little far for me to be driving 70 miles r/t everyday. It is a good 300-400 bucks cheaper for a comparable house thio.

Also came to say this.

have you skied Grand Targhee before, or are you dead set on Jackson? It may not be a bad idea to make Targhee your home and just make the trip to Jackson every-so-often. I know Driggs is WAYYY cheaper to live at. But if you're driving 60 extra miles, @25MPG and $3.80/Gal, that's an extra $10ish/day. If you're driving over the pass every day of the month, then the $300 extra you're spending would break even just in gas money. It also doesn't take in account how much the convenience of living right there would cost you.

true true, all the jobs im looking at are in jackson tho. The difference in rent is say only 1100 on a 4bdrm house instead of 1400 in jackson, so when thats split four ways, its only $75.

then there is the whole 10k+ people in jackson vs about 1k in driggs.

This is the kind of stimulating talk im looking for thanks to all so far! Keep it coming, esp if you know someone looking to rent a place out or is looking for roomates!

I've been debating this as well. Housing isn't terrible from what I've been looking at but it's food and gas and everything else in the town that is more expensive. I've applied for maybe 15 jobs in that area in the summer and have only heard back from about 3.

If you need a roommate, I'm in though. There are some pretty dope houses/apartments for not too bad. And I've also only applied for jobs that provide housing because living by yourself is crazy expensive here. I've also made quite a few friends at college that are locals, so I know all of the cheaper/better places to eat/go.

as of now its me and two others, a fourth would be great! Idk about living in driggs, Ill have a car, but idk about anyone else atm. I dont think they would want to deal with always having to find a ride/carpool ect. Driggs is hella cheap tho, so idk, maybe its worth it. That first place you listed looks fly as fuck! Im just concerned with finding a bed and shit, cause I cant move my queen mattress all the way from chicago on top of my wagon. A furnished place would be tits!

Grand Targhee is the shit. I can understand why you would count Driggs out because of how small it is and/or the job situation there, but don't rule it out because you'd want to ski Jackson. Every time I've been in that area I've had more fun at Targhee, I love that place.

word, the skiing isnt really a factor, I mean it is, but coming from where im at now in IL, anything out that way is whats up. I want a decent bar/nightlife scene, not to mention the older rich cougars that roll through jackson on a regular basis!

Ever thought about not moving to Jackson?

Plenty of smaller ski areas with less tourists, more snow, different vibe. BC, WA, OR, UT, CO. I know CO and UT are having a bad snow year but dont count them out...

I frickin love jackson! i went there for the first time this past christmas break, and it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. i too will be moving out there when i graduate (2 more years!). As far as jobs go, check out McPhails Burgers. Its a super nice sports bar, run by a super chill guy. we stopped in a minute before closing our first night there, and the owner/chef came out and ate with us and told us everything we needed to know. we also talked with the waiters who were fresh out of college, living the dream and loving life.

i know of someone looking to rent a place out in driggs, really close to targhee. im not sure of the cost but if you are serious i can find out for you, they are friends of mine, i do know that the house is pretty big, no appartment, but if you live a couple people in it and split the cost it might work out all right.

Whis, Whitewater, Red, Stevens, Bachelor, resorts in Cali

Just a few places that average the same if not more snow, also all those are awesome areas to live.

Not saying Jackson/Targhees is a bad choice just making sure you have explored all the other options.

I def appreciate the additional input, but we are pretty set on this area. I dont want to live in Cali, its just another broke ass state like IL is, but with nicer scenery and just as expensive. The PNW is very appealing, but we all like the area of jackson/targhee, two bomb ass resorts that are about 30 mins apart.

A big factor for me is that I have many many buddies that are within 6 hours that I would like to be able to visit, and have them visit me. Not to mention, its a 'quick' 20 hour drive back home to IL for holidays instead of a plane ticket from the PNW.

Let me break down your first paragraph. Broke ass state?  How does that affect you?  You're living in Tahoe, not SF dude.  Two bomb ass resorts within 30 mins(try 5+in tahoe)?  Why would you go to jackson if you want to ski resorts?  Don't get me wrong jackson is probably my top three favorite resorts but I wouldn't live there if you were going just for the resorts.  People live in jackson for the easy access BC.  Judging that you're from IL you don't have gear and or knowledge.

20 hr drive?  Ok without weather.  you can get round trip ticket form SF to Chicago for 300.  Plus if you're young you live in California.

I hope you the best as jackosn is one of my favorite places.  I just hope you go for the right reasons.

How does that affect me? Higher cost of living, higher cost of gas and food. Waaaaaaaay more people and traffic. Tahoe is sweet, Im just not a big Cali fanboy. I do have gear, and avy knowledge, so dont go judging me based off where Im currently living man. Im looking for more solitude and peace, trying to get away from the hussle and bustle. Also, when I drive home with my two or three other buddies from my area, its an EASY drive and costs about 75 a person. Not to mention road trips are fun as fuck. I appreciate your thoughts.

It's smart to move in the offseason when there are more jobs and housing options. The same goes for any ski town. I trust you are already browsing the JH News and Guide classifieds. Other than that you are doing well ignoring advise to move closer to Grand TarGay. One thing some penny punchers seem to forget is the wear and tear on brakes, tranny, etc which result from driving a mountain pass (nearly) everyday. Another bit of advise is to make sure to get a place near a Start bus stop. Oh, and California, Colorado, Utah, British Columbia, and the rest of the PNW are all far superior places to live to ski...in case anyone else is wondering. Housing, jobs, and ladies are impossible to find in this conservative ass state!

If you look in the right places housing is reasonable (i pay 400 right now for my room in an apartment complex 2 blocks from town square). Were actually looking for 2 roommates to move into a 5 person house with a pool in town (beginning of may + you'd need to verify your not a d-bag).

Jobs really aren't difficult to find either, but now is definitely the time to be looking.

Jackson's a great place, I've only been here since December but I love everything about it so far.

Nope, from the midwest as well.  I've been in cali for the past 2-3 years.  I consider myself very fortunate to live next to some awesome mountains.  I'm jealous because Jackson is well, Jackson.

Haha nope, lange race 120s. They are about as ugly tho, baby blue ftl. I havnt skied at crapmot in a few seasons. I did work there for 5 years from 01-06 tho.
