When will ski movies evolve

so this might be a repost but ill take the bullet because i had no clue what to search bar.

But as you know most of the ski film industries have a shit ton of riders from random ski companies grouped together based on style of riding and etc.

But when will we see certain ski companies (line, armada, noridca) start making full fledged movies with just their riders in them kind of like snowboard companies do (captia and forum). and yes i know they have companies like video grass as well.

Although I do love how the ski industry does it, its just the sole question of if or when skiing will do this

I think we're going to skip an evolutionary step and move from the ski movie model into more of a produced web series model. Say where there's 4-6 episodes in a season and perhaps a movie or big re-edit dropping in the fall.

Because of the massive web communities that exist in skiing, it has a much larger audience for this type of thing, vs. other action sports which don't have such vibrants hubs of activity.

The DVD model is dead. That won't leave room for as many full-length movies as before, as the idea that you can just rack up tonnes of debt making a movie and pray to god you make it back in Video sales will not seem so appealing.

There will be a push for brands to get involved in web series, and an influx of interest in fresh content which is this season and now vs. always watching stuff from last season.

Movies will go back into more of an artistic thing, or simply be viewed as collections of the previous winter's series. Only the best will still put out full movies.

You will also be given the opportunity to either pay for content or watch ads to support free content.

I will be sad to see this. The gathering of people stoked on new segments and banger tricks is just fun. Events like IF3 and Triple Threat are sort of a tradition for this sport.

I hope plot plays a role in the future of any action sports movies, as I see it watching a compilation of tricks for 40-60 minutes becomes boring and repetitive. I feel like current movies should be compressed to web edits and series under or around ten minutes, and we should leave the 25-60 minute films to the story-line type of movies. I hope more movies come out like "Last of the Ski Bums" my all time favorite which incorporates what was the action sports back then into somewhat of an actual story without leaving the sport part out. Although I don't see this happening anytime soon I think it would be nice.....

Seriously. Other than Salomon, lets look at a big name in the pioneering of major webisodes.............NIMBUS. One of my favourite groups of skiers. Who gives to shits about their recent endeavors. Seriously, name a "webisode". But Idea or Hunting Yeti? Timeless. I just spent the last two hours watching past Forum movies because they had a certain nostalgic feel that some half assed temporary webisode that had no hype will never achieve, therefore making it useless in the long run. Like a facebook status update or an instagram of your last meal.

Keep real movies alive!

This will also, and already has, lead to multi-year productions, with Rice paving the way and Candide being the first to bring it into skiing.

Know how to fight against this happening? Hold the footage and release the film in the fall. There is definitely a consumer base wishing edits dropped all the time, but nobody will ever get over seeing a premier or purchasing a vid for home watching. I've been hearing full online content for a while now and it hasn't happened. There just isn't enough support as long as companies continue to produce videos and release them as they do now. Would I support the switch? Hell no. I enjoy the anticipation, and like watching videos on a tv rather than a small ass computer.

That computer vs. TV argument is invalid nowadays - who doesn't have their comp synced in with their TV?

The Real Skifi and Nipwitz guys for example support the webisodic format, it helps them create a lot of hype and anticipation, make a lot of different feeling looking videos while still doing what they do best.

The fall release format may not become obsolete in North America, as you have a long line of tradition of premieres and movie nights thanks to Warren Miller and other pioneers. Here, at least, there might be a few premieres a year, usually showing 4-5 top movies in one sitting akin to IF3, or a few small bar excursions with amateur films - but outside of that, they get lost and swamped under the now very prolific production company roster!

In 2005 or so, I could have still probably named all companies doing films, nowadays there is so much going on it's not possible, a good thing for our sport but a bad thing for recognition for many underdogs.

When are we going to regress? I miss the classic ski porn format, give me rider segments, varied soundtrack, a crazy intro completely unrelated to skiing, and a focus on huge booters and you'd have... well, Teddybear Crisis.

I feel ya man..I think the problem is there's not enough companies out there with the big time budget that companies in skating and snowboarding have..for example..many shoe companies in skating will take teams to different countries to film on tour and stuff and skiing you're not really seeing them as much...look out for a fischer team video this year!..It's going to be mostly backcountry but should be sick!

But flying someone to Barcelona, for example, is a piece of cake if you're a skater - film night and day, no one gets cold, non-stop stuff if needed, but with skiers you have to take into account extra luggage fees, the difficulty it might take to get into certain destinations, actual lodging, lift tickets etc.

Not like I've sent anyone out to the world but seems plausible.

ski movies need to devolve, get back to movies like white shine and ski porn. they're getting too long, and have too much talking, too many skits in between segments.

Voleurz's "That's Fine" was my favourite movie this year to watch. good soundtrack, good skiing, fun vibe and not too long. that's what i want.

I personally don't think that it is a bad development that ski movies start to diappear and webisodes start to rise. I really enjoy full-feature length ski movies and every year I've bought at least 3 or 4 , but short webisodes are just more pleasant to watch for me. It takes a lot of, well, concentration to sit still for one hour and watch skiing, as awesome as it may be. With guys like Real Skifi, I get to watch an awesome edit every one or two month. I get way more exited for every edit from them then I have ever been for a full movie, just because in such a short time they are able to show such big variety, which just isn't possible for a long movie. I have watched all SKifi and Nipwitz episodes way more often then the movies i payed for, and they don't get less entertaining, while I find it hard to watch for example the grand bizarre, even though it for sure has amazing skiing in it, more than three times.

I would be so stoked if production companies died out and ski companies (boots,skis,whatever) made movies with their teams. And fuck location segments too, rider segments are so much better. That's just my opinion as an avid skateboarder though.

i love the voluerz movies but other than that i think ski movies all kind of seem the same. what i want to see is a full length movie thats made to look just like a really good edit

Then do it yourself, honestly.

If you want to see a direction, support it, crave for it, sure - but if you go and make what you want to SEE, you'll be a legend and you'll also achieve what you wanted in the first place.

Ski companies are already doing this indirectly. TGR is sponsored by Atomic along with a lot of their riders. The same can be said for MSP and Salomon.

It's not necessarily worth it for ski companies to set up a filming division when they can essentially contract it out to the people that are experts in the field.

I disagree. Dendrite came out with an awesome movie but were unable to follow up. Now it seems that they are doing some filing for the bigger companies.

I for one want to see the ridiculous offerings of TGR and MSP. I also enjoy smaller films, and even edits. There is room for it all. The most in demand will survive.

Completely unrelated, but is rage films ever coming back? i loved their movies and i saw an edit they made with a snowmobiling company the other day. Doesn't seem like they are completely dead.
