Fuck trig

When the hell will i ever need to know anything about trig in my life. My math teacher is an ass and she assignes us 50 problems a night of long trig equations. I see no us of this ever in my life in the near future. So when the fuck do you use trig that it is so important to do.  /Rant.

well yes, obviously this guy doesnt just wing it. if the guy who built that jump for wilson had taken a step back and looked at it you could see it wasnt going to work. you dont need trig just some good intuition

People use trigonometry every day. Do you want to go into business? Science? Engineering? You better learn your trig.

Basic trig like angles and lengths of a triangle, man everyone uses that. My grandpa is over 80 years old and never went to university and still knows his basic trig. You know why? Because it's fucking useful. Surveyors, construction workers, architects. Everyone needs basic geometry.

But really, even if you never do anything involving trig again in your life (doubtful), a big reason why it's taught is to help improve your problem solving abilities.

actually, building jumps is almost completely eyballing it. seriously. i worked for park crew for a season, and you just learn to build it "right". you get the hang of it after a while.

as a grad EE student focused in antenna and microwave engineering, i have used trig every day since i first learned it. you literally can not do anything remotely useful in math without a strong base in trig. i hated it at the time too but once it becomes second nature, you'll love it. looking back, i really wish i had more homework and harder problems when i was first learning it. and when you get to calc, taylor series, stokes theorem, gauss theorem, all that stuff youll think has no real world applications is actually the most useful thing in the world. the most common type of problem i see is either a taylor expansion that is way harder than anything youll ever see in calc class followed by the most horrendous trig identity simplifications you can imagine. and then theres the stuff that cant be analytically solved and you need intense trig to estimate it...



sparknotes: i know math (at any level) seems useless at the time but trust me, having a strong base in math will set you apart from your peers. work hard. a lot harder than you want to. it will be worth it.

Definetaly, Im a mechanical engineering major and I just finished my last math class. I totally understand how frustrating math can be. But math is just as important as being able to read and write. Math models basic logic. I think that people that don' t like math forget that math is about physical things and not just numbers.

Trig can be frustrating because of the memorization (wait till you get to integrals of csc, sec, and cot). The fact of the matter is, trig is extremely useful.

You could probably go your whole life without ever having to find the third derivative of -18csc²(9θ²), but it is very important to understand the importance of mathematics. Math is the backbone of the physical and digital universe. Your computer works because of a mathematical programing language and that flower grows based on a series referred to as the Fibonacci series. Understanding how math affects you makes you wiser and gives you important perspective. This is why liberal art colleges are increasingly popular. Even if you want to be a Philosopher or artist, the knowledge you gain from other studies greatly affects your view on life. Hopefully making you less ignorant, objective, and judgmental.

You are probably gonna ignore everything I just said because you don't have a fully grown frontal lobe yet, but hey it was worth the shot, eh?

I'm not going to try and act superior to you (hurr durr look at me I knowz calculus omgz), because that won't help you at all. I was in the same position as you a couple years ago and back then I felt the same way as you. Just push through it though man, I did and it opened up a lot of options for me later on.

in any technical field you will need math. TONS of math.






math is so much all around us that its hilarious to think it has no "real-life" implications. youre just the stereotypical dumb highschooler who is too cool for anything.

legit jumps, i mean 80+ feet require trig, or some sort of math for that matter. and op i built a rail this past weekend and yes i did use cos, sin, tan and various identities to figure it out.

its not like you will all of a sudden forget the names of the cast of jersey shore or your current ranking in MW3 if you read shakespeare or learn basic math or whatever you learn in school.

Everything you learn in high school IS important. I can't stress this enough.

My example is english. I didn't give a fuck about english class, I thought poetry was stupid, I thought Shakespeare was stupid and I thought that I was good enough at writing not to bother paying attention in class. Guess what it totally fucked me over. I went into university realizing I had literally no idea how to piece together a good paper. My sentence structure sucks, my ideas are unorganized and it takes me twice as long as most people to end up with a satisfactory product. This is in science. I know the science but I never get A+ on papers because I can't write well. I am going to take english classes soon here, but REALLY wish I had just payed attention in high school english.

High school is fucking easy. If you are getting bad marks you are either a lazy fuck, or genuinely mentally challenged. Most likely the former. It teaches everything to such a stupidly elementary level that literally ANYONE can learn it with minimal effort. I made it through high school with probably 12 hours of studying per year, and got decent marks. I am not a good role model here though. Go to class, put in an hour a day of studying, and actually learn your shit. You will NOT regret it.

true. while smaller jumps are build by eye, bigger ones are definitely calculated in any respectable resort. on my home mountain i know for sure that the kicker over 40-50 ft (we have like 3 45 ftrs and 3 65 ftrs) were calculated beforehand. at least the first time they were build like 2-3 years ago and from then on youre pretty safe regarding what angles fits on what inrun and stuff.
