I'm sorry but honestly I don't think Tom Wallisch deserves to win against Kelly Slater (which he is right now). He already beat Travis Rice in the 1st round but I honestly just think thats kind of ridiculous and almost embarrassing to Travis...

Don't get me wrong I love Tom Wallisch and he's an awesome skier and everything but lets be honest, Kelly Slater has won 11 world titles, that is ridiculous! Could you imagine winning a world title 11 times? Not only that hes won a shit load of events and even Travis who's a pioneer in the sport of snowboarding and has come out with some of the sickest snowboarding films I have ever seen. I don't even like snowboarding that much but those movies absolutely blew me away.

I know this is a skiing website and all and I rarely rant like this but I just think its kind of unfair towards these athletes.


I don't even know why I'm getting worked up about this considering these polls don't really mean shit. Probably lots of hate coming my way but thats just my 2 cents...

You guys keep forgetting the fact that Kelly won a world title last year. Personally, I think winning an ASP world title is IMMENSELY more difficult than winning the fucking Dew Cup. Its 3 fucking events of the same exact shit. The ASP has 10 STOPS of every kind of wave imaginable, super shallow slabs to long point breaks. Ok, statistically Wally had better results last year, but having to do amazingly well for 10 different events at the age of 40.

this is false. Slater is still at the top of his career and I'm predicting he'll still be winning comps right through till he's 50. I mean, he's won the world title the last 3 years out of 4 and his latest competition results are better than Wallisch's latest results.

If this contest was held 10 years ago do you think tanner, Candide or any other skier for that matter would be on the ballot?  I honestly don't know.

I'm talking about freeskiing, not skiing in general.  I guess more to the point of freestyle contest skiing,which relates pretty closely to ASP IMO.

Mike maybe you guys should put out more than 6 issues and your office wouldn't be so dominated by the 12 issue Surfer?  I know I would appreciate Powder arriving just as often as Surfer to my front door.  Has this ever been considered? (probably a stupid question).

The debate has nothing to with it being a poll or not. It has to do with people's opinions on whether they think Slater or Wallisch, for example, is the better athlete.

If a thread was made asking whether Slater or Wallisch was the better athlete then the exact same debate would have happened.

It happens all the time here. There are multiple threads a week like that.

Freeskiing is skiing just as snowboarding is snowboarding and surfing is surfing. Sure, there are different types but in the end, it's all skiing.

And dude, more than six issues (we actually do 7, the extra one being a newsstand only Gear Guide)? No way. How am I going to go skiing if I have to be in an office?

The point is, Wally deserves any accolades he gets. He's not polarizing for our sport like Shaun White is for snowboarding. And in regards to dominance, a lot of surfing's prominence on top of the action sports world is similar to skateboarding in that you can buy Rip Curl boardshorts or Vans sneakers while not participating in surfing and skateboarding. Unless kids start rockin' Full Tilts to school, they'll always outsell the shit out of winter sports.

Let's take a minute and appreciate that we've gotten here. Then get off the internet and go skiing.

Slater is in better physically shape? Are you fucking kidding me? Do you have any idea how hard Big Mountain Riders have to work out? They have quadriceps of steel. Kelly is in now way as strong as one of them. You clearly have no idea. His wourkouts and stretching routines are comparable to the ones Jossi is doing. And Jossi is a park and pipe rat, not a BM Skier. Surfing is demanding physically, but so is any other sport. Claiming how shaped he is is a joke. Just google pictures of him, even my chest is bigger. His endurance may be good though, but nothing special.


I totally agree with "surfing is the golf of action sports". Skiiers have a 100 times faster physical decline than surfers! I never counted Surfing as an action sport at all. How much could happen to someone who's able to hold his breath for 1,5 minutes? Yes, the water is strong, and yes, you could slam hard into it crashing on bigger lines, but those risks are a joke compared to real snb or bmskiing. I know that prosurfers take very very big risks, too. Still, I've never seen the ambulance on the beach as often as I saw them on a typical skiing day on a skiing hill. Surfing does NOT demand your body as skiing does. Like someone already said, no way would one's body hold up for over a decade on pro park skiing level.

I somewhat disagree with you, respectively. Although I do agree and I understand that BM skiers have extremely strong legs and they do work out a lot (it's not all about upper body guys!) but to say that they are in no way to be compared and that it is the "golf of action sports" is ridiculous!

Have you not seen Mavericks or even Pipe Line? Just getting out to Mavericks is not only extremely dangerous, but to get pumped by one of those waves is absolutely crazy. Yes skiing probably does have a higher fatality rate due to the uncertainty of avalanche risk, etc it doesn't mean surfers don't go hard and that it is like golf...

and lol a minute and a half? It can be waaaaaayyyy longer than that if you get hit by a big set, have you even tried surfing before?

To be honest most of the guys who have at least tried both understand that surfing isn't easy and although it looks mediocre since they sit out there and wait for waves, it is demanding to get out there. Whats the difference between sitting out waiting for a set and riding the chairlift?

I still agree that skiing may be more dangerous and possibly more demanding but to say it is easy would be ridiculous.

yaaa bro, you're right. I sure don't think pro surfing is easy, I just wanted to emphasize that I find skiing more challenging.  Also, I know it can be waaay longer if you get into wild waters. But it seems to me like you got my point here, right? I tried surfing, too, although I can't compare my two week holidays to surfing the Mavericks, haha. Guess we could agree that both sports are gnarly as fuck when executed on a certain level while skiing definetely has a much higher risk of getting injured.

Aaaaaand you need to work out harder ;)

He's won x games, two of three dew tour stops, dew tour cup, then competes in war of rails and wins that just for the hell of it. and that is just in 3 months... If TW lost to either of those guys it would have been bs.

Because you surfed for two weeks? Shut the fuck up. You literally have no idea what you are talking about. I can take a year off skiing and still show up at kill it. If I didn't surf for a year I don't think I could even paddle out in actual waves.

For surfing you need to be in way better physical shape. Actual surfing, not 'I surf twice a week, I'm a surfer.' I could get bombed daily/nightly/pretty much every waking hour while living at the mountain and still ski fine. That does not work surfing.

Look, if you paddled out at any actual break you would get sent home. So shut the fuck up.

He came 7th at Freestyle CH and came 14th in Budapest.

Slater grew up in south florida, pretty much the same as learning to ski in PA. The surfing down there SUCKS most of the time.

7 springs sucked back when he skied there, you fucking idiot. his jump game consisted of lincoln loops and landing backflips to his face. his rail game was decent, but nothing special. it's only when a rail kicked his ass in the land of trail side, did he become the best.

but what i'm trying to say is that kelly slater has bad finishes as well, you god damned retard.
