im having trouble deciding where to go. I know UW is a looked at as better but im looking for some personal expierences people may have. I love WSU campus and the fact it snows a hell of a lot more there in the winter. But UW is in Seattle and close to my home mountain. What are your guys's thoughts
As a UW student, all that prestige and ranking and other bull shit, does not really help the quality of your education.
There are people going to WSU right now getting a much better education then people at UW.
Honestly, go for which ever one fits you best, I would not fret to much over which one is viewed as being 'better.' In the end, college is what you make of it, and what you did while you were there is going to matter a whole lot more than the letter head that your transcript gets printed on.
This.
But I have to say that while there are students getting a better education at WSU, there are likely more students recieving a better education at the University of Washington (all else being equal).
Rankings are not to be disregarded, because they are established for a reason. Don't get too caught up in them, but there's a reason UCLA is ranked higher than Idaho State, and not because one is bigger. There are definitely some exceptions to these rankings, and WSU is certainly one of them, and commonly underratted when compared to UW.
It is agreed that this ranking and prestige shit that plagues many peoples college choice will not help the quality of one's education when comparing two schools that are relatively similar (to a certain extent). However, they will help after graduation. Someone who gets a 3.8 at UW in most given fields seems more likely to have greater opportunities on their plate than someone who attends WSU and receives the same grade point (again, all else being equal). Look into the research opportunities of both, the lab space, the hands on learning, as well as aspects that help you as a student. You're essentially shopping for your education, so get the best bang for your buck, and if WSU has a better learning environment for you than UW, then by all means, go.
In the end, it's going to depend on how you use what either college provides for you.
I have a friend who goes to WSU, and he comes back West on the breaks to ski Stevens.
Never heard of someone going over to Pullman on a skiing/snowboarding venture.
But again, refer to the OP that I quoted. I definitely had to ask myself that after being accepted to schools. You're going to school to learn, not ski. Skiing is extra.
Feel free to. MOO, but most of the 'better than thou' opinions are grown more from students looking to justify the XXX people in their class with a professor who is uninterested in the subject, or whether they learn. I am looking at a much wider birth than UW with that statement.
Again MOO, but 70% of the students I see on campus, would get the same edumication that they don't need at WSU, as they get at UW, and they would probably get a better one at BCC, or OCC..
A lot of kids paying a lot of money for a pretty piece of paper with the student placing more value in the letter head than their potential employers do.
Yeah I see your point but I still believe that UW offers a much higher quality of education than other schools. Especially when the class sizes get smaller, you get in to your department and the professors start caring more about you. There is some significance to the rankings, and even if employers don't think much of the piece of paper coming from UW we are still given great networking opportunities through the school. I'll be getting in to IE Engineering College this summer.
Go to WSU with me man. It is great for me coming from CA because it costs me less than a UC, I loved the campus, it's a PAC 12 school, and I'll be more likely to graduate in four years than I would be here in CA.
to the UW students arguing about how good their school is, how the fuck do you know you're getting a better education if you haven't been anywhere else?
Go to Gonzaga. That is probably the only school in this state with any sort of "reputation".
This whole UW/WSU thing is pointless. Go to UW, be a number in the crowd..Go to WSU, be in the middle of nowhere. Either way, the only thing of value you'll get is a diploma and you can get that from any college. I hire engineers out of college and I really don't care where you went to school. I'm going to look at your area of study, if your GPA is decent and if you have any relevant lab/work/club experience. Thats it. There is no prestige with either of them....especially in engineering. If you fit the bill for what I'm looking for, I'll hire you....
Talking to several students who transferred into the UW from CC, many of them consider the education they receive here at the UW, to be of lower quality than the one they got at their respective CC.
My whole town goes to WSU and continues what they did here, being drunken hillbillies..
That being said my brother is going there so I guess I have to say go Coug's now..
And yeah Pullman is bumfuck nowhere for sure but it seemed like a cool campus and I feel like it would be a good experience, although it seems to me like college is what you make of it.
meh, some places suck, some places are cool. All of them are what you make of it. There are lots of places in this world I would take Spokane over... been to a few of them too.
if you got into uw, go there no doubt. I got into wsu, didnt get into uw, so im heading south. wsu in the middle of no where, you may become a professional drinker at wsu tho.
In establishing lifetime Idiotic Alcoholic Douchebags, yes. Anything else, no. I would put more weight behind a transcript from ITT, than from UofAlcholism.
back when it was written they had some other articles about their methodology but the video kinda explains where they were going with it. Obviously not the most empirical report in the world but its insightful.
The skiing sucks at wsu ill be the first to admit thay, but its a rad school with some great culture and a phenomenal alumni network. newsflash, u dont need to go to college to ski, and if ur picking a school based on nearby mountains, ur selling urself short
Much better green and less hicks (I'm guessing) at UW than WSU. I can't give a very good opinion since I'm only applying for college right now, but the UW campus is super pretty especially in the Spring time, and it's close to everything in Seattle. Any Metropolitan Area>Pullman, WA any day.
