Videos now play inline on Facebook

That is right, we have conceded defeat against our better judgement and allowed videos to be played in-line on Facebook.

This is awesome for sharing, and I hope that video producers will be able to get a lot more views on their videos because of it. We will be tracking carefully the balance of views coming from facebook and NS, so I can either be proven right or wrong in my theory that people don't actually NOT click because it links through to another site.

Of course though as always, if you guys demand something (even if we don't believe in it) we're willing to listen.

I have mixed feelings on this:

I totally understand where you are coming from, wanting to keep site traffic as high as possible and get individual viewers to come into the site and discover what its made of...

but at the same time, It will get more views for us because more people are able to just watch the video and not bother with another site.

The good news is that we're tracking stats, and have historical stuff to go off of to compare.

So I will absolutely (after we have enough data) either very publicly prove myself right, or very publicly prove myself absolutely wrong.

I want the best solution for you who makes video, bar none.

The part that people are missing is the more traffic we keep here, the more revenue we make against that (and other) videos, and the more revenue we can dump back into the NSTV producer program.

I don't want to block videos from facebook because I am selfish... I want to create a walled-off ski media environment where the people that make the videos get paid money.

However, fuck it... we'll just give some of that to Mark Z. and call it a day because we have more views on a few videos in the short term.

I seriously might be completely wrong though, and I'll be dead honest even if I am. Hell I hope I'm wrong, it'll be awesome if we can spike video views by a billion percent because nobody has to open a new tab in their browser to watch a video.

Actually... to add to that -

If you want your video to be part of the test, please upload it to newschoolers and share it on facebook. If you post that video in this thread (link to the NS video) I'll use it when I generate a spreadsheet for analysis.

Please for bonus points include a video you made before, and shared on facebook with no embedded playing.

Super stoked on this, but at the same time I came to realization that I dont care if it embeds on Facebook or not. Stoked you guys managed to work that out!

Well you'll be a perfect person to test it then.

I seriously want to answer whether it makes a big difference or not. MOst people would swear that you're giving up like 90% of your potential views by it not being embedded.

I have a bet going with JP at the office that its not going to be much more than 10% more. MAYBE 20%.

they dont work for me,       the play option is there but when i click it the video box disappears.

just checked myself, and I am finding the same thing. Just a white void instead of a video.

so it doesn't seam to be across the board. just checked my other laptop and it works on that one, but not this one. tried a few to watch a few NS videos via FB and they all just came up as blank white.

Im running Windows Vista,   normal version that comes with Dell w.e that is

tried Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, Safari.  same problem in each.
i installed the latest Flash update but it didnt make a difference.
Youtube and Vimeo video links are playing fine.

I also tried iphone facebook app which brought me to the ns.com video page when i clicked it.  Is that one supposed to play straight from facebook too?

welp, it works for me on chrome. I like it a lot.

now if I could get a video upload to work my life would be complete.
