hahaha one of the many reasons that hockey rules...its insane that if this happened in almost any other sport the players involved would have suffered serious suspensions but in hockey if you have a problem with someone, duke it out right then and there

NHL threads has more details/conversation but....

In essence in the NHL you honor your best players or those playing well by starting them. As such, whoever is out for opening faceoff is there to intimidate be with skill or in this instance muscle.

NJ started this by sending out some of their rougher players....got to love how NYR responded especially with a defenseman taking the faceoff

i love it. it pisses me off how everyone talks trash in other sports but don't/can't do anything about it. hockey's still holding true to it's roots-- if you got a problem with someone you handle it on the ice

That is the most unmanly thing I have heard in such along time. Even if you're not a fan of the actual sport of hockey (which is strange because it's fucking badass, I have only ever played like in the streets as a kid with friends but they're some of the most entertaining sporting events to attend and watch) if you're not a fan of watching three grown men fight during a professional sporting event you can turn in your testicles and tiny penis and have a fleshy patch of skin there for the rest of your life please.

I think this is pretty retarded and I'm gonna explain why.

This goes against my vision of a sport, a sport is about respecting your opponent, even in sports such as any martial art or boxing, athletes respect each other and they need to keep control of their emotions to win. Here this is the "rage" of the moment, this dude pissed me off, I'm gonna kick his ass, it's just impulsiveness.
Well, I dunno, this seems pretty primal and childish to me. Same shit used to happen in my schoolyard when we were playing soccer or whatever, but back then, the teacher would separate the kids and explain them what are the values of sport, here, the crowd applauds. I mean wtf?
I don't know the first thing about hockey, but I'm eager to learn, what are the values of hockey?

It still doesn't surprise me that some people find it "awesome" just like some people loved the circus in Rome, but what's awesome about it? It just looks like 2 drunkards fighting in a bar over the last peanut.

But, heh, that's just my opinion.

Idc what you call me. When I go to a hockey game, I want to see hockey. Just like when I go to a skiing comp, I want to see skiing not two competitors fighting. Srsly if you guys just watch hockey because of the fights then you need to grow up

bunch of fucking goons. fighting has no place in hockey. the 'it gives momentum' argument is so damn weak, and that's about the only argument there is for it. Those are grown men, bitch slapping each other like they're in grade 5 fighting over crazy bones. so sad.

Well, not really, my point was to explain what it looks like to me, and confessing that I don't really know the game, so maybe there's more to it. Hence my question, do I miss something about the fighting rule, is it fighting for fighting, or there's more implications/consequences on the game? Damn there's some heat in this thread.

I can totally tell you know know nothing about hockey, not necessarily a bad thing. But you are lacking the reasoning and understand as to why there are fights in hockey.
Hockey is a totally different animal then any other sport. Baseball, soccer, and basketball don't count because they are not physical sports, that involve grown men crashing into each other. There is no room for fighting in any of those sports.
Like I said hockey is a totally different animal. Imagine having a stick, and being able to complete fuck up another dude on the soccer field, without having a red or yellow card thrown at you.
There is way to much opportunity to get under someone skin with hockey. There are many different types of players in hockey. There are players that sole job is to annoy, heckle, and just plain mess up any offence that the other team is trying to achieve. With that being said in football, each play is stop and start. After each play, the play is dead, and the game goes into sort of like a time out. In hockey there is no stop and starts like that, only by a goal, or a ref whistle. Like I said in hockey you have many different types of players. The superstar goal scorers like patrick kane, the mean two way forward like Marian Hossa, the massive defenceman that will fuck your world up in 2 seconds Zdeno Chara. There are too many opertunities to mess someone up, in hockey which is the reasoning behind fighting. If some dude on the other team takes a run at your superstar, then it is responsibility of the enforcer on the team to go fight that dude, or whoever on the other team. This makes players think twice before decking someone.
And next time that guy is on the ice, he will be looking over his shoulder, or may pull up before he hits one of your players.
Fighting also gets teams going. If your team is down lets say a few goals, getting pounded physically, being beat to lose pucks. Through out your enforcer to fuck someone up, really gets your team going, and makes the other team think twice.

The only thing sadder than your pathetic attempts at presenting a counter-arguement, are these players. They should be role models to kids who want to play professional hockey like them. Just the other day I saw a video on Youtube of three or four kids (like 8-10 yrs old)that were playing hockey, and then suddenly they just started fighting each other for god knows why. Every comment was either praising their scuffle or lol'ing at it. It's stupid if hockey is going to continue like this, I can't see myself ever taking this sport seriously.

I want someone to put forward a legit argument for why fighting has a place in hockey.

And you can't use 'entertainment value' as an argument. No other professional sport, besides professional fighting, has fighting and they certainly don't have any lack of fans. Hockey has fewer fans than basketball, baseball, soccer, football, etc etc etc. None of them have fighting. If you want to watch a fight you watch some mma or boxing. Also as a Canadian I do not know one single person who would not watch hockey and would not be just as enthralled in the game if there were no fighting. Just take a look downtown Ottawa next winter Olympics when team Canada is playing. Aint no fighting there. If you're a true Canadian or hockey fan from the United States or Newfoundland you will be perfectly happy watching a great hockey game that didn't have a fight.


You also can't use 'momentum' as an argument. Again, you can look to absolutely any other sport and completely discredit this argument.

Hockey players have a tonne of respect, watch any fight with Janssen and you'll see him patting his opponent in congratulations, or Paul Bisonnette giving his opponent a lot of respect, think about it, in hockey as soon as player is down in a fight they don't continue punching, it's respect. Also when there are the all star players against the goons hardly ever will you see a goon go and fight or purposely injure one of the finesse players, it's respect.

It is the culture of the league. As previously mentioned - there are different types of players. offense and defense yeah but also different playing styles for each position. some guys are small and fast and make plays, others and big not so fast and stop plays. it has been that way since the beginning and culture doesnt change fast. but watch a euro game or highlights, they dont fight and they hardly check.
And you pretty much provided the reasoning behind why more isnt done to stop it - hockey has less fans than pretty much all other major sports here in the US. In the eyes of a marketing manager fighting = drama = more attention = $. im not saying that i agree with it or that its right but i like it!

It is not at all in the culture. I've played countless games on countless outdoor rinks all over small town Ontario and Quebec where hockey culture can't be matched. There just isn't fighting. no one does it. it's not at all part of true hockey culture. the only place it happens is in leagues.

also culture is a ridiculous argument itself. There used to be some south east Asian peoples that would eat the brains of the enemies they defeated as part of their culture. They'd end up getting an equivalent of BSE. Just because it's their culture does not make it right.
