You're missing my point... this shouldn't be the only image we have of skiing... there should be many. Then, we can all chose one to identify with, take elements of each or completely create our own. The main point that I'm arguing is against the idea that we need to conform.
You also shouldn't invoke the Tanner thing. He went through a pretty serious punk phase, and was by far the most hated person on here.
"Let me start this off by saying that I've been a huge Tanner Hall fan for years. He's a great skier despite the irritating image he puts on. Tonight changed my perspective completely. I was at the IF3 premiere for "Believe" tonight and Tanner, Kye, Sean, etc were on stage introducing the movie. Tanner was drunk of his ass and slurring his speech and would grab the mic out of the event organizer's hand. Every second word out of his mouth was "fuck" in front of a croud which included many children. Just classless, not cool. Just to top it off, after the show the idiot was so drunk he spilled beer all over himself as he tried to take a sip. He also refused to take a picture with a fan (who by the looks of it was 13-14 yrs old). Anyways, the guy's an asshole plain and simple. There's nothing wrong with drinking and swearing but I mean come on, it's your movie premiere can't you wait a few hours to get wrecked? Great job Tanner, you're an inspiration... :|
One less fan for Tanner...GO DUMONT"
____
Tanner is a great guy, but even he went through a pretty gangster punk phase. Some people loved it, some hated it... but it broke up the monotony found in the rest of the sport at the time.
There was a segment in there of Tanner in the woods smoking weed and yelling at the cameraman.
We used to celebrate alternative behaviour because it was all against the grain and fighting for something. Even if you hated it, at least you know that the renegades in our sport were doing things differently... and you knew you were part of something that was challenging the norm.
Tanner never hurt anyone. He never made a bunch of kids turn into 'classless idiots', nor did he give our sport a horribly bad name. He did a few crazy things, skied some awesome shit, helped us pave the way out of where we were and lead us into the true nature of 'free' skiing.
To those who argue that this gives us 'a bad reputation'... well sure it does. But who gives a shit? I mean do we need to bow down to those who are so closed minded that they would judge everyone DRESSED like a newschool skier based on one fucking ski edit? Frankly if there are people so closed minded like that in skiing that I need to make sure to scrub the reputation of every company out there, and ban them from newschoolers....
Then I'm fucking starting snowboarding. Fuck this bullshit.
obviously the butthurt old man whose career consist of trying to sell ad space and defend the (cough)

I won't quote your whole post because it would take a while to scroll through, but will talk about it.
How the fuck can you compare this Tanner Hall segment to the video that FD put out?
1. Tanner fucking kills it in this segment and there is a pretty chill shot of him on a couch drinking and smoking a blunt at the beginning and end. The FD video had like 3 minutes of them shooting guns out of a moving car, flying planes, etc...and they certainly do not kill it on the slopes like Tanner.
2. Poor Boyz supported Pop Yer Bottlez, but I highly doubt that you could find a major ski film company that would put this video as a segment in one of their films, or allow FD to make their own film.
3. Really? You think smoking weed in the woods and yelling at a camera is the same as recklessly driving a car on a snowy road, sometimes with other cars on it, and shooting guns out of a moving car? I think you would hard pressed to find others that share the same view...you have been arguing with ridiculous examples like this throughout the entire thread.
You talk like other ski companies are doing the same thing, but I have not seen one other video like this that was put out by a ski manufacturer, outerwear company, whoever. If you know of one or more, please send me a link.
Stop defending your fucking friends, they put out a stupid fucking video and their company is most likely going to suffer for it (more than they already are)...there is a reason the warehouse was full of boxes full of clothing and their shit was steep sale before every other company's stuff - NO ONE FUCKING WANTS IT
And why do you have to shoot signs? Its not cool nor hip or even SLIGHTLY "badass" so why do it?
Those signs are meant to last (not to mention keep drivers safe), so when you go shooting them up that means they have to be fixed/replaced. Yeah and taxes pay for it. Thats my money that I'm forced to give up.
STOP MESSING WITH SIGNS! THEY COST A LOT OF MONEY!
Fair enough that its different, but you're not reading my point. My point is that we've always had escalating levels of sculduggery in the sport. THere's gangster attitude in that segment, and the whole movie is filmed in a club.
Its fantasy is my point.
I'm not arguing that shooting guns into the air is a safe, smart or good activity. Staging it to show an image I could care less about.
I'm arguing the image, not the mechanics of a perceived-to-be real video. The main difference is I know its fake, while others are arguing the semantics of it being real.
So sure, the activities depicted in THe FD Wear video, if performed in real life with no forethought are fucking stupid.
However, since we're not arguing that fact, (at least I'm not) I'm arguing that its Ok to have some fucked up images in the sport. Its great as a matter of fact.
I know you're angry, so is everyone. The beauty of capitalism is you can speak your mind exceedingly loud with your wallet. Don't buy their shit... buy something else! I encourage you as well to do that!
I also encourage people who want to wear tight pants, those who want water-proof everest gear... those who skin... shit those who are ski instructors. I don't give a fuck what you do.
Skiing has an identity crisis whether it's old school, new school, rasta, gangster, hipster, racer, euro, sherpa or whatever. You don't like it then don't buy the products...plain and simple. There are plenty of choices out there. Its def not how I would choose to do things thats for sure....but some of you need to wash the sand out of your vagges.
We are all ambassadors of the sport and there is no right or wrong way to represent it....if you think you know better then your full of shit. This is America girls!!!
Shooting guns at signs is no way to represent ANY form of skiing. In fact, shooting guns in that manner, without any concern for safety, the law or other people, is not a way to represent much of anything in this world. It's disgusting.
I have a problem with someone who has a decent amount of power in the ski industry (the owner of a company) abusing it by making an immature video that reaches other people in ski industry and reflects newschool skiing as a bunch of spoiled white kids who go around doing reckless things with their excessive amounts of money (that came from where?). This affects how I am treated by others, which is completely relevant to myself, obviously.
I am saying that, as a person of power in the ski industry (especially the more newschool/freestyle crowd), Lesh & FD wear have an obligation to represent it in a way that doesn't screw over the rest of us. There is something called accountability that this company apparently does not know much about.
I back myself and how others view me and my buddies (and many members of this website)
That's easy. They dress however the fuck they want, and act however the fuck they want. It's like your sig (roughly paraphrased) - "Newschool is a state of mind" . There are no uniforms in new school.
All of the kids saying this edit potrays our sport badly should shut it. This thread is bonerz.
The difference between the FD edit and 4bi9 is that 4bi9 has been known for doing this kind of stupid outrageous shit for their entire existence and they are awesome. On the other hand we have First Drop which isn't a crew but a company and they are having their athletes represent them in this way and they are in the middle of the craziest identity crisis that I have ever seen. Wanna know why they didn't have any shots of Tom partying? Because he wants to keep his sponsorships and so he doesn't want to be portrayed in a negative aspect unlike all the FD BRRRRROOOOOOSSSSSS
there are much worse things on the internet than this so quit crying, plus ever herd of blank bullets i highly doubt they were just blasting rounds into the woods....and clearly they are just trying to make a funny video FD is tight and people need to find another company to hate on that is all
I get where you're coming from, man, I do; but shooting blanks out of a car is about as dumb as you can fucking get, and even though the other mildly dumb 'edgy' shit they did was kind of a joke and good for skiing (multiple images and all that), you've gotta be fucking kidding me.
Multiple images for freeskiing is good, breaking up the monotony is good, but this feels like they tried way too hard to do it. Challenging the norm is great, but let's be real, this isn't challenging the norm, this is groping for PR.
It's not that I'm worried what judgmental douchefucks on the evening news/your local Big City/weekend warriors think about us, and I'm not worried about what this crap will do to our reputation. I'm worried that someone can look at freeskiing and think, "Oh, it's okay to objectify women and teach kids to undervalue the dollar and party irresponsibly while doing incredibly illegal and dumb shit because hey, freeskiing".
seriously...
who buys this crap?
epic sales on their site.
...
obvious PR stunt is obvious.
any press is good press, i suppose. especially when you're desperate.
Err, for clarity, I'm fine with the whole 'objectifying women/undervaluing the dollar/partying irresponsibly' shit. If you want to be a douche, that's on you. What I'm not okay with is the 'because freeskiing' crap.
Anyone ranting on this edit should straight up quit freeskiing. We don't need your judgmental fuck face anywhere near us.
Lesh is a legend and is living the life, hate all you want.
I still think its quite funny that so many people took the time to write about gun safety and how they are so concerned about the safety of others while none of you had the balls to contact proper authorities and get FD checked out.
Best troller right here, you guys fell for it pretty damn hard.
im not gonna lie I havent finished the whole edit yet, or read much of this thread. but are they really being different? or just hanging on to the hard image really tight and carrying it as far as they can. I feel like 2 or 3 years ago all of newschoolers went pretty hard on this whole thug image... smokin trees slammin brews and just going off. I guess it is different in the sense that not many companies choose to market in such a way... not to mention them screaming for extra views with that disclaimer for the younger audience haha.
As you have said, 'newschool' skiing is all about breaking the norm and challenging the way skiing is currently. How then, can one say what they should wear or how they should act? Is there any 'right' way?
Many of the examples that you have given to refute my (and other's) claims have been completely irrelevant because this video is a special situation. This is the owner/founder of a freeskiing company that has put his own wants/needs in front of the good of the freestyle/newschool movement by making all of us look badly, whether it was intended to be that way or not. There is nothing badass about flaunting one's money, wearing a grill or shooting blanks (if they actually were) out of your car, it is just stupid.
As previous posters have said, this video was just a ridiculous publicity stunt by Lesh to try and save his dying company. If you have proof that FD wear is alive and well, please provide some concrete evidence and I will happily rescind my statement, but from the huge discounts (early in the season), what looked like a very large stock still in their warehouse, many ads on NS and culminating in this video, it looks to me like FD wear is in dire straits.
Do you really wonder why NS got the best skiing humor site? Because you support videos like this. There are many awesome threads and discussions that go on on this website and I love this website, but in a situation where a video gets a lot of publicity in the skiing community, you (one of the site administrators) go and try to troll TGR & unofficial networks in order to make light of the stupid video that your friends posted. I am not saying what you did was right or wrong, just don't be surprised when NS is seen as a joke by the rest of the skiing community because of a situation like this.
It has become obvious that neither I nor anyone else is going to be able to change your mind about your buddies or their video, but this is my point of view and I think that it is shared by at least a few members of this site.
I honestly don't understand why people are taking this edit so seriously and getting so angry about it. I thought it was pretty funny, and Bishop has said all of it was staged, so why does everybody care so much? If this is the way they choose to represent their company, then let them.
And I think that THIS is the problem I have with this edit. In the new The 4bi9 House episode, it WAS "super raw, core, don't-give-a-fuck". They actually did that shit, had fun, and made a video of it. And I thought it was hilarious and absolutely loved it. In this edit he hired a film production company, clearly did several takes, and went even more over the top (grillz, fake drive bys) to a point where there is no way that this is "real". To me it just looks like a rich, spoiled kid trying to buy his popularity by PRETENDING to be "super raw, core, don't-give-a-fuck". Claim that it's a "satire" all you want, I don't see it, and the previous actions of this company certainly suggest otherwise.
And don't even get me started about the disparity between the actual skiing...
