Questions: Audio Setup and ML Intervalometer

Hey M&A!

So a few things. This summer I will be shooting some interviews (and more in the future) and I want to upgrade my audio set up (currently have the rode video mic pro with my 60D.) I've read through some audio threads and I understand a bit of how it all works. For the interviews, I am guessing I will want a lav mic? (or would just the stereo on a recorder be good enough?) I've heard of the h4n and the Tascam dr100, which would you guys recommend? Also, any recommendation on a lav that has the most bang for the buck? I've also read something about needing a booster because the levels are so low?

Also, I finally downloaded ML. Has anyone had any experience using the intervalometer? It has a setting that takes pictures from the Live view and saves them as 422 files. This does not use the shutter. Has any one worked with this at all? I've read converting them from 422 to jpg can be a bit difficult?

One more thing, the "magic zoom" feature in ML is flickering in 720, making it almost impossible to use. Has anyone had the same problem or now how to fix it?

ill help, i have a 60D with the videomic pro and i have used a variety of boom and lav mics on that camera and the 7D

for interviews, lav mics are the way to go. i have used sennheiser wireless packs and i can't remember the model off of the top of my head but they have a connection from the receiving end straight into the camera's ext. mic input. you don't really need a separate recorder for those. also the recorder by itself would only be good if held right next to the speaker and in the shot looking unprofessional. you won't need any sort of booster on them because with magic lantern on the 60D you can get rid of auto gain control and monitor and set the levels manually

for the flickering, those are features that are kinda more on the automatic side. i haven't used it at all yet to know

AMAZING LAV for the price, its sooo cheap and still sooo good. not wireless though... I have it and I LOVE IT

I have a pare of Sennheiser Ew100 G3-A which are some realy nice mics, im trying to work out a deal form 1337 with them but if the price is right id sell them to you if your intrested

So still trying to figure out an audio set up. These seem to be the options (please correct me if I'm wrong)

1. Stereo mic from the external recorder (DR100 Mkii) and sync in post. I also heard that the DR100 couldn't record with its stereo mic AND record lav?

2. Lav mic to external recorder and sync in post

3. Lav straight to camera. I'm not quite sure how this is supposed to work. In a wireless system, how does the "plug in transmitter" work? For instance, here is the sennheiser pack (lav, transmitter, receiver) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/618735-REG/Sennheiser_EW_100_ENG_G3_A_Evolution_G3_100_Series.html

But what if you were to get the rode lav mic and turn it into a wireless mic with the sennheiser system? I'll mainly be doing interviews with these in indoors and outdoors. Still trying to get the hang of audio, so if you can help out, +K.

number 3! that set up is money! you have the mic and transmitting pack attached to your talent, then you have the receiving pack mounted to your camera via the cold shoe adapter it comes with, and there is a 1/8" to 1/8" cable thats locking on the pack side and it plugs straight into your camera's mic jack. then with ML installed, you can monitor the levels and adjust as needed. i shot all the interview scenes in this video with that same wireless setup, and my 60D with majic lantern on it.

sorry for dub post, not trying to self promote but i also shot this video with that wireless set up as well.
its only used on the interview scenes outside with the fountain next to her, all other audio was a rode vidmicpro

once you have the mic/transmitter pack balanced just right with the receiving pack, when you are out filming its basically turn on the packs, put it on the person on their collar or lapel or chest or whatever around there, plug the receiving pack mounted to your camera in, have them just talk to see the levels from magic lantern, then make sure they aren't clipping or too low and your good to go. i forgot the exact model but it was the sennheiser wireless packs, basically identical to the ones you had in the link
