as stated in the title i have just applied for a terrain park crew job, providing i get it i will drop out. i mean im in my last year of school, im sick of their stupid rules i allready have some school qualifications and its basicly prison to me. my real problem is telling my parents cos they spend like 17000 dollars a year to send me to this school, they are going to be mad... what should i say to them?

Like I said before, I'd rather do it than a higher paying job so yes I'm able to make it work and survive. It's not always pretty but it's what I have to do. In the last few years I've learned that life is pretty short. Gotta make the best of it. I'd rather do something that i love and I'm good at than slave to some shitty job and spend my life working to acquire money that I'll be dead or emotionally bankrupt before I ever spend.


I'm putting some serious effort into finding a way up. Going to take some serious effort some $ and some time but it's worth it to me.

Most people work places, slave to there jobs and don't have much at all for promotional opportunities. They make make more money, but it you hate your life is it really worth it?


And what exactly in the music world are you aiming for?

Also, no one here is telling you what to do. We just want to make sure you know the consequences and reality of everything. So if you absolutely want to build parks, do it. Just realize that you have a lot of potential, so don't waste it.

I don't want to be a musician as a career, I want to go to law school. I loooooove political science. Law is an area of study with constant change, a constant source of income, and will always be relevant. That's my reasoning for going into such a career path, I don't believe everyone is cut out for it, and I know I'm not cut out for other careers either.

I already play music as a side job, I'm exactly where I want to be at this point: making money off a gig every now and then, having fun, meeting lots of pretty girls, getting crunk, and producing shit people want to hear. It's amazing, but I know it's not sustainable. I'd be dead by 40 with all the shit I do.

I like your attitude man, glad to hear you have your priorities thought out. But like I said, we clearly have different priorities/interests. Personally, law holds my interest a lot more than the slope of a jump...I'd rather just shred what y'all build, haha.

wooord man thanks. but I will defend my first post...I really didn't mean it to be all about money. But I do think that if you plan on being a family man you should really consider your children's future when picking a career path. and dropping out of high school severely limits your opportunities.

also, I never said not to be a terrain park builder...I merely posed this thought, however badly it was set up: why not finish college too? if you decide you want to go back to building jumps afterwards, DO IT. but then you have more opportunity if it doesn't pan out. and there are a lot of interesting careers to pursue out there that do offer interest (for your soul) and income (for your body)...just seems ill thought out to drop out that early...

sorry for the numerous posts guys I just almost did the same thing...and I almost dropped out of college to be a musician...but I'm going back because I know that I want alternative paths in case my more interesting passions (music, skiing, black market entrepreneur) don't work out.

Waste of a life? please. Enable people to have fun VS stack up as many billable hours as possible. Lawyer is like one of the most deplorable professions in society. Have fun working 80 hours a week on a 40hr base salary, taking a few ski trips every year, maybe even getting some turns in on the weekends. I'm just saying it would suck to devote all your time to making money instead of enjoying life. Oh right, going over pages and pages of legal rhetoric is way fun to some people! You act like low wages and seasonal employment is a bad thing.... there are so many social services, you can buy an income restricted condo right next to a full priced unit that some blood sucking lawyer gets to see twice a year. Food and heating assistance. You can go on unemployment during the off season. You don't have the stress or the responsibility... meh whatever. Be a lawyer, make tons of money, send your kid to private schools then watch as they drop out to dig snow.

I finished high school and didn't go to college. I honestly think dropping out of high school is retarded to relate to thread. And this is coming from someone who had a horrible time with school. I'm really smart but I'm fucking horrible at school. Some teachers loved me and i was doing awesome in there classes. Some teachers hated me and i stopped going to their classes. I can't learn form the way they teach, and shit was undiagnosed for a while and high school was pretty intense between me, parents, teachers/principle and fuck it i'll throw the cunt of a psychologist or whatever she was in there as well. But anyway I just figured I had been in school since I was 3 or 4 to get to that point, why drop out right at the very end. Did some summer school and made up the classes I had dropped and graduated. Didn't even go to my graduation. I got my diploma in the mail sometime after.

As far as college, I feel like half the people going shouldn't even be there. They are going for reasons such as " that's what your supposed to do, their parents want them to go, to have fun and party. Paying 20k a year to come out with a degree in nothing like many people do seems ridiculous to me. At the same time there are plenty of people who go to college for the right reasons and get a good degree regardless of if they up up in a fitting career or not.

I'm not even 100% sure if I'm gonna work park crew next year. I might just get a job mowing lawns for a winter and try to get a little better with a cat and go from there.

College wasn't for me at all. Would have been a big waste of money.

I have nothing against working a job that enables you to live the lifestyle you want, but pay your own goddamn way if you're going to do that. Don't just rip off the support system that's supposed to be there for people who really need it.

but,

the whole live somewhere good and pay your way thing is a nice thought, except the cost of living is based on how much men who have devoted their lives to the pursuit of money can spend on vacation.

It's not ripping anyone off, and support systems such as income restricted housing are specifically designed for the people who live in resort towns on local wages but can't afford prices inflated by rich vacationers.

Honestly I loved building parks more than anything else I've ever done. If it means something to you, fuck the money and go with your passion.

Following your heart is absolutely never the wrong way to go. The only thing you have to make sure of is that you're not dropping out because you think it will be easier. Its easier to finish and go the status quo than it is to follow your dreams. That is the most important part of what I was saying.

This is very true but I really don't think that it's applicable to OP's case. I may be wrong but it doesn't seem like being a park crew member is really following his dreams. I mean how many jobs does the average person have before they settle into their career/calling? There's no reason to throw away a free education (that's almost completed) for a low paying seasonal job with the perks of what? Maybe a free ski pass?

Depends what kinds of work. I never remember being physically abused at school, but the mental abuse was torture in its purest form.
But, physical work it diffrent than mental. Mindless work is easy on moral, but destructive to the body.

But look at it this way, everyone works diffrently in the brain. Some have the passion of mental dicipline and intellectual work and thrive on it. But for some of us, we can focus, hold information and regurgitate it on the exam.So, physical work is where you belong. But, the shittier the job, better the pay.

If you drop out and hope doing nothing pays the bills, like the case of OP, he is just lazy in both forms. If I got through high school, anyone can...if they do the minimum.

hey guys i really apreciated mr bishop and everyone elses input, i guess i could tough it out. things i missed out in my intro was that i am in new zealand so its for the up coming season i was also looking at running lifts or snow making any one no anything about these. my parents just told me that they were getting me a programme called dragon dictate that types what i sat on my computer so that i could have more ease translating my thoughts and words to the paper. thanks ns you have enlightened me of my silly ways.

by the way i am 16 not 15 and not dumb infact i am considered gifted and talented and in the top %2 of the world i just struggle with school with my severe dyslexia and dysbraxia as well as slight add

When you're a teen school seems like torture, like there are so many possibilities out there and greatness will come as soon as youre done with school. Every senior(myself included) dreads the day they graduate. Life weighs you down like a ton of bricks and the responsibilities pile up, car insurance, health insurance, cell phone bill, rent, food, and that doesn't even mention when things break or need service, you're poor as dirt every step of the way.

College/High School is a dream. If I could go back and be a freshman in high school I probably would go do that.

He is from NZ, college is a lot different here.
For starters 90% of peoples parents don't pay for the schooling you have to take out a loan.
And you get entry in college after the age of 21(i think its 21 around that age) regardless of your previous qualifications. I don't recommend dropping out but people that do make it just fine, if school isn't for you right now take some time of and go back when you find something that really interests you.

you think your parents want to spend 68 THOUSAND dollars for you to not get a diploma? im sure they would have much rather had a couple of sick cars or a really nice vacation than a derelict son with a part time seasonal job.

school is basically prison to everybody, no one likes it, everyone else just bites their tongue and endures it because you need to. i went to a private highschool myself, and it sucked. i had 1 friend, shitty grades, couldnt ski, had SATURDAY CLASSES (you think your school sucks?), and by the end of my senior year i was severely depressed. what did i do? i told myself thats its a matter of months, just do everything you have to for damn good grades and a successful finale. i worked my ass off for the first time, and i felt so much better. my parents were pleased with me, my teachers were pleased with me, other kids started talking to me, and i felt so much better about myself. by the last couple of weeks, i actually liked my school.

so my recommendation to you: dont drop out, obviously. make everyone super proud from now until the end of the year because its not that long, you can do it. after you graduate, take a gap year and go work for a park crew and pursue that passion. after that go to college, because if you find the right place you can still ski 3 days a week, meet some of the coolest people, and get a real degree. and no matter what anyone tells you on NS or elsewhere, YOU NEED A DEGREE TO FIND A DECENT CAREER. yes it can be done without, but that is rare and laborious, and means you miss out on college.

It's not some sneaky thing, you don't have to lie or manipulate any forms. Becoming unemployed in the off-season has nothing to do with lazy, some places just don't have the employment options available. You know companies pay into an unemployment fund per employee right? Anyone taking it has at one point put something in.

As far as leeching, if you don't work for a private company bringing international currency into the US you're leeching the system. Do you consider fuel and food subsidies leeching? Think your parents could have afforded half the shit in your life if they didn't get dependent tax breaks for the crotch fruit? Or if their no kids neighbors didn't pay for your education? work work work busy bee! make something for society! don't you have a debt to society to be a productive member? You owe the world a life debt! Or, you could pursue happiness.

ehh kinda missed the point, resort towns are not sustainable. Living in omaha and working at the Goodyear distribution center is. Don't be a leech go live somewhere that has year round jobs, yea sounds great... Never said they were mutually exclusive either (in fact I said the opposite earlier), some people find happiness in work good for them, they get to drive up prices for people who would rather find happiness in other ways.

Upsides of not dropping out:
+ plenty of opportunities later
+ your parents won't get mad, in fact they're probably going to be proud
+ the money already spent won't be cash thrown out the window

Downside of not dropping out:
- may suck right now; but you will thank yourself later.

Maybe you should work on your people skills. I could walk in a room with a bunch of strange people that contrast with everything about me and have at least a few friends by the end of the day. Maybe you smell bad.

To some people park crew is a passion just like anything can be and is a worthwhile career.

Holy shit! You can ski 3 days a week? That's so many man. That's like skiing everyday accept it's not even close. And most people in school make it 2 maybe. I can ski 7 days a week.


You already talked about how you have shitty people skills so I doubt you've met that many cool people. I have a pretty solid network of friends all around the country from not going to school, instead of just knowing people in one centralized area. Free places to stay in a large chunk of the us and some of canada.

This is the biggest load of recycled bullshit today. To get a decent career and be successful, you need to be motivated and determined to make it work, regardless of what path you choose. That could be anything from working at mcdonalds to getting your masters in something. (I knew a kid that worked at mcdonalds, worked his ass off and is in some manager position running like half the restaurants in the state.)


Most people don't even go to college for the right reasons. People don't go for real education any more. I mean you just went because your parents wanted you to go. If you're gonna drop 20 grand or more a year, how about buying a fucking house, getting some roomates. And having a house paid off before your friends are half paid off with their student loans.


There's lots of ways to be successful. You've bought into the whole closed minded idea that you have to do it this way according to this plan for it to work. That's bullshit. "YOU NEED A DEGREE TO FIND A DECENT CAREER." Hearing that makes me laugh at you.

Point about going to college for the wrong reasons part 2. I remember when I told people I wasn't going to college they were all "But you'd have so much fun". I was like "Hello dumb ass, I'm not avoiding college because I'm some awkward socially retarded child that doesn't fit in. I'm simply skipping college because it's not right for me and I'm not going to waste my money".


Spending 80k on something simply because that's what you're supposed to do is fucking stupid. People should actually look at their goals in life and really see what options and avenues will best help them reach their goals.

Just getting a bunch of college brochures and picking out the one that looks the coolest is fucking dumb.

Put me in any of those places and I bet there's a very good chance I could get a job. Maybe not a job I like but a job. I don't work in the summer because I have a condition that doesn't allow me to work in the extreme heat of the kitchens I used to cook in. That was my summer gig, park crew was my winter gig.

Now instead I just sell posters, tshirts, stickers, pins at festivals and travel all summer. Do I have anything against people riding the unemployment train all summer? Not really. Honestly our system is so fucked as well as our govt I don't care. I'd rather have some other people on it than some of the people that ride things like the welfare system forever.
