Man, this is what kinda pisses me off about summer camps, the fact that you even have to ask "will I fit in?" It's not the fact that you asked it, but rather how the people at the camp act towards others.
Summer camps seem to be just popularity contests. I personally would never like to go to one because of this. BUT, as long as you aren't a super douche or the weirdest of the weird, you'll be fine I would assume. In fact, I bet you'll find that a lot of the people there will be worse than you.
I had a couple friends go to a later session two years ago and they had a blast at age (17). They learned a lot and said that there was a variety of skill levels. But, it prolly helps if you go with a friend.
GO. Everyone there will be some of the coolest people you meet. For some reason, not that many kids go for the ski camp; there's way more BMX, skate, and even scooter kids than skiers, which is actually a good thing. The staff is awesome, and by the end of the week, you feel like family. Definitely a tight-knit group there.
go, definitly go. i went last summer when i was 13. you will have no problem making friends since everybody there is the coolest. this year they are adding another in-ground trampoline, which bounces you like 10 ft off the ground if you want. plus, i heard they were making the water ramps bigger. its a really fun place watch some videos on youtube. http://youtu.be/uBmI-ANT7ME
This was the problem that I had with a lot of summer camps I went to as a kid and ultimately was the reason that I kept going back to Ohio Dreams and then ended up working there.. Because it is not a popularity contest at Ohio Dreams. The camp literally is like a family and if you go you will agree! It doesn't matter your sport or ability level, everyone becomes friends and it makes for an excellent camp experience.
Hey man, glad to hear you're interested in coming to camp!
Gretchen, special-J, and a few other campers posts above pretty much hit the nail on the head. We are most definitely an action sports camp, but we strive to maintain a relaxed, summer camp feel. I've been at Dreams since just about the beginning, and we hardly ever have any issues with kids being bullies or causing problems with other campers. If we do, they are dealt with swiftly so the bad apples do not spoil the camp experience for the rest of the campers.
Don't worry at all about fitting in, we work with campers at all different levels and chances are there will be some kids below your skill level and some above.
As far as Session 1, it's always a great week. Everything has just finished getting dialed in, so the facilities are at their freshest and everyone's stoke is at an all time high because camp is finally starting. There is traditionally a pretty big group of campers in the first week which makes it a really fun and diverse session with kids from all different sports.
If you have any further questions about camp, feel free to post in this thread/the forums, send us a PM or an email, or just give us a call. Hopefully we'll see you at camp this summer!
Awesome coaches to help you get better and progress. Chris the owner coaches Nick Goepper. Chris Laker went there Freddy Brad Bulzan. GO GO GO!!! You will love it.
bring some old boots and skis. It definitely does not ruin boots but if you want to keep you good ones perfect, you may as well. There is a risk of snapping skis just from bases landing flat on the water.
Literally anything you want.
Definitely bring one (or a bike or rollerblades or something). There is a LOT of free time.
Try looking around at your local shops for end of season sales and used gear and keep on eye on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum here on NS to pick up some ramping gear for cheap. Like special-J said, water ramping can certainly take a toll on your gear, especially skis, so it's a good idea to have something you're not worried about damaging/breaking.
As far as goals, we work and talk with all of the campers at the start of the week to see where their skills are at and where they want to be at the end of the week. That way we can set goals that will push your skills and and challenge you, but are also realistic and attainable during the time frame in which you are at camp.
It is a good idea to break your skateboard, or any other gear you have, as there is plenty of time to freeride and do your own thing. Everyone has instruction in their designated sport for about 3 hours in the morning, and then the afternoon and part of the evening contain lots of flex time when campers can try other sports and do their own thing, however coaches are available if they want to continue honing their skills in a specific arena.
