14 Year Old Triple

Johannes Skøien (platepetter on Jibbin) had a near triple flat today. He is only 14, too! I personally think its crazy that 14 year old's are almost landing triples. This one wasn't even bad, he almost stomped it.




Thoughts?

Meh. I agree and disagree at the same time.
He has dub flats down pretty solid. But he has room to improve on them. I think he is ready though because he has good aerial awareness. He always seems to know where he is in the air. But he should get better dub flats before this.

I tend to agree. I am not against progression of the sport but, the kid is 14. If he threw a double, he would probably win every big air event he went into. Is it necessary for him to do triples at the age of 14? Again, not against progression....that was a sick trick

Agreed.
The sport has to progress eventually. I don't agree with all people saying "that was a stupid idea". He can control his dubs, so why not triple? His dubs aren't perfect, but they are good enough and he can control them. Are you gonna tell me Russ Henshaw's triple fall was stupid? If this is stupid, then why isn't Russ' attempt? Because he is older? It's the same thing. It's a triple. Age shouldn't matter. It's good that young kids are trying to get better. A few years ago, people would think that kids his age shouldn't be doing dubs. But the sport progressed. This is how it always will be. He wants to take it to a new level, so why is that stupid, because he could break his neck? Heck, you could break your neck doing a single flip.
I don't see why this is such a "stupid" idea. It's just a crazier trick. Doing any invert presents the possibilty of breaking your neck.

That wasn't the main point, I meant to address all the people saying he could have broken his neck, etc...
Anyone has the possibility of breaking their neck when doing any invert. If they are 14 or 24, they are still presented with the risk of getting injured. It wasn't about who's ready or not. If everyone doesn't like this because he could have gotten seriously injured, then you should have a problem with you doing backflips. "But I trained a lot for backflips"...So? He trained a lot for flatspins. He has solid dub flats, so why not triple? Anyone could get hurt doing any invert. So saying that this was stupid because he could have gotten hurt is just blatantly a stupid statement. Because YOU could get hurt doing a dub back or whatever.

Also, .Lucas., why is being able to do dub rods both ways relevant for Russ if he is triple corking? Same goes for Johannes, if he is going for a triple flat, being able to do a right side dub cork 12 is irrelevant. He has good dub flats, so why not triple?

I personally have a different view on this, but I don't feel a need to go back and forth about it. I think his dub flats are good, so I don't see why not do a triple.

But I can see where you're coming from. But I just think differently from that.

its stupid because he had almost no chance of landing it on that jump, had to huck it incredibly hard, barely got the grab if he even did, but he still landed on his face and seriously hurt himself. how is that more noteworthy or impressive than a 14 yo stomping grabbed double flats? because he had the balls to almost kill himself?

i'm not against people getting into triples. i just don't want to see kids breaking their bodies trying things when theres scarcely any chance of landing and high likelihood of injury, just to get some attention.

and russ tried a triple on a huge jump and had time to hold the grab and put his feet down first. just ask me which video looked more controlled.

OK. I'm going to address all 3 parts from MY point of view:

He can stomp grabbed double flats. He can also grab 14s. He has pretty good control in the air. He didn't even huck that hard too. If he didn't go for the grab and had just tucked up he would have landed it. He didn't almost hit his head on the jump like most people who huck.

He did have some chance of landing it. And it wasn't just for attention. He stomps all of his dub flats with grabs. He can control them very well, and stomps them all the time. He could of landed it if he didn't go for the grab.

I wasn't trying to rip on Russ. My point there was that Russ had a high chance of getting hurt too. Traveling 20 feet high and 90 feet far well spinning around 4.5 times and flipping 3 times presents a huge chance of injury. Maybe not as much as Johannes, but he still could have easily gotten hurt. He has more control than Johannes, but he still could have easily gotten destroyed.


One last thing, I don't think anyone is giving Johannes enough credit as a skier. I mean, he is a solid skier. He grabs his dub flats and stomps them. Grabs his kangs and stomps them. Grabs SW 10s, and 14s. He has grabbed 10s since he was 12. He is a solid skier.

i'm sure the kid shreds, and i would love to see an edit of the stuff he has with grabs and good landings. but all i've seen as of yet is a really really stupid triple attempt.

and i still think it was hucked as shit and he had no chance of landing it. but this comes down to opinion so there is no point really debating it.
