Specs?

I'm getting a new laptop to replace the one I have, for when I go to college.
This is the one I'm looking into getting:

Hate All you want, but I just don't care for Laptops. The chances of breaking them are like 200% more then if you had a desktop. Also desktops area lot cheaper. I know when I go to college I'm bring my huge 27" iMac son.

Laptops are prime for school, some classes you just need the laptop.

I used to use an iMac and MBP but I sold my iMac because it just got annoying to use two computers. Right now I have a 17" MBP with i7 2.5ghz and 8gb of ram, pretty standard. Pretty much any higher end windows laptop or any MBP will work fine for video editing. Everyone gets so caught up in numbers, its ridiculous.

I'm working with a dual core iMac with 2 gigs of ram. Hopefully gonna be sporting an MBP (quad core, 4 or 8 gigs of ram) when I go off to college next year. Will prob pick up a monitor for cheap for big screen editing and video watching

I just got the basic Imac. 21.5 inch with i5 and 4GB of RAM. Ended up bumping that up to 8GB after I bought it. Runs like a champ. Never had any problems editing on it. I can rum chrome, color, and FCP all at once and its still lightning fast.

15" macbook pro

2.2 ghz quad core i7
1gb graphics card
hi-res antiglare screen
500gb 7200rpm internal and 2tb external

and if you do go with a mac, you can get a decent education discount, and if you upgrade the ram yourself, it costs less than $50 (4gb to 8gb). If you ever played with legos and own a screwdriver, you can do it. I couldn't be happier with mine. while i may have payed more than most people, I know it will last a while, and it does everything so fast

Some Certified Data desktop with 16gb's of ram and a 3.2ghz amd phenom x6 hexcore megatron shit. next year when i'm in university i'm probably going to buy a used macbook pro.

build your own desktop, and with the money you saved, buy a tablet or cheaper laptop for everyday travel use.

This. I am running a oc'd 3.3 ghz quad core athlon II. 16 gb ram. 1gb gddr 5 ati readon hd graphics card. 1 tb hddrive. and it is awesome. I am going to be getting a new monitor soon, and then getting a laptop for school probably

this may work for some people, I actually considered getting an iMac and using the saved money to get a tablet/small notebook, but I like to be able to take everything with me, so I can edit photo's and video's on weekend trips. If I wasn't in college though, I would've prbly done this. There are pros and cons to each, you just need to decide what is the most important

Same here except 17".

And I have a 2tb WD usb 3.0 hard drive with an express card 3.0 port as well as a 1tb time capsule and a 24" 1920x1200 hdmi matte monitor which is really nice for editing with. (monitor is some random brand that my buddy gave me for free but works amazingly well and has great colours)

I have three internals/two externals. I constantly back my shit up, and when I've had my mac go corrupt for a reason I still dont know, I just have all my files and programs right there. I also keep my DMG's and all my install programs on a HDD so when i do have to rebuild im not scouring the internet for downloads for programs.

I mean, if something breaks or a HD crashes im paying for it. 1/2 the reason I love mac products is the apple care.

Funny story actually, my MBP was broken (untill today). March 3rd the first Apple store in the Netherlands opened (about 2 minutes from my house in Amsterdam, where I live) and two days later my MBP broke. Went there from tuesday through friday, coming back every day trying different things to get it working again. Finally on friday I handed it in and a genius had said it had probably something today with a cable that had to get replaced, 15€. So I was like, sure. Now, my MBP is 1.5 years old and I didn't have Apple care, so no warranty on that. It was supposed to be ready monday, but got the call today I could pick it up. They charged me 160€ for a new HD and I said that's not what I agreed on. So I got the HD for free, labor for free, 10.7/Lion for free and they also cleaned it (cosmetically. There were stains EVERYWHERE and now it looks brand spanking new again). Just had to pay 15€ because that's what I agreed on. Haha, good customer service.

MacBook Pro 15" 720 hard drive, only 4 gb of ram now, upgrading it when i get the fund, its only like 40$ but i have no money, and its not at the top of my list

I got a used Thinkpad a couple months ago. 2.2Ghz and I think 2g ram. I ain't rich enough to get something super nice. It's run Vegas Platinum 11 fine so far, but then again I haven't had the time to work on any actual projects of edit length yet.

just bought a 15 inch macbook pro, 2.2ghz i7, with the 1gb graphics card and high res anti glare, insanely excited for it to get here. After about 3 years on my $400 shitty laptop i am looking forward to working on the new one :)

I was editing on my 7 year old desktop that has been laying around forever. A few days ago it just stopped working(now it just circles through the broken screen). Lost all my footage and all my files that were on that computer. Now I have to get it fixed, for the time being i am editing on my crappy laptop with a broken screen. Right now I don't have any money since I just spent it all on a new tripod. Guess I have to wait for another few more paychecks then buy a used MBP.
