US soldier snaps, kills Afghan civilians

Seems like some soldier got hit with a little case of nervous breakdown, walked out of the base in Kandahar at 3am and started blasting.

Three confirmed dead, but the real number will probably be closer to fifteen. Women, children, men etc.

The soldier then walked back to the base and let himself be detained. No motive except for the initial breakdown.



Damn, they're not cathing any breaks nowadays over there, with pissing on bodies, burning Qurans and now this.

Nah it's not worth being discussed. One guy killing 3-15 civilians, because he "snapped" isn't news worthy. This has happened to such far far far worse extents in every war man kind has ever fought. So this guy's actions are pretty insignificant, comparatively. I mean the rape of Berlin hello? Something like 7 or every 10 women in berlin were raped by russian soldiers during the invasion. Not to mention the countless civilians murdered during that one time, in one war. It's war. Shit like this happens. It will never go away. It will continue to happen, just because of social media being able to send this information around faster doesn't mean it's any worse than what has happened in the past. They say war is hell for a reason and stupid shit like this happens. I'm not saying it's not sad and I'm not saying it's just because it's in a war time environment.

All I am saying is no it's not news worthy nor is it worth being discussed.

The news story is a new one but the arguments that are had on here are tired, stale, and worn thin. There are plenty of us that read the news regularly that dont need newschoolers to remind us that there are injustices going on in the world.

That said, 99% of the time I dont even bother going in these threads that are started just to get everyones inflammatory one sided opinion.

Wow I'm surprised with the responses in this thread so far. A situation like this is obviously terrible and it brings up the question of what can we do to council our soldiers there and try to keep them mentally stable. I realize that this is "war" and fucked up things happen, but you can't just ignore something like this.

Exactly. What pushed this particular soldier over the edge, to walk to three different homes and kill all these people, then calmly walk back and surrender? How is the mental well-being of soldiers taken care of, and is it adequate?

From what I personally have noticed with my guys, and other medics there is no way to council or catch what's happening before it happens. We have all these little things, programs we can go to and even have to go to at times to check our mental stability. It is just usually some one random at some random time.

One of my buddies did a similar thing while a Taliban prisoner was in our little prison cell. Went to go pull guard and after a little bit came back and said we don't have to do guard anymore. Well, he's in jail.

hey now, lets not go jumping to conclusions. by american law he didn't have any drugs on him, so he's in the clear. 3 months, and probation, sounds good to me.

It's a tragedy, but not surprising. If you break down someone's identity, train them to be a killer and put them in an environment where they're under a lot of stress, this is the result. It's not random, it's just something that's going to happen. It won't happen to everyone, just the people who are predisposed.

Scandinavians should take better care of their mentally ill, they flaunt their national health care as the best in the world yet these things still happen. There should be systems in place to take care of these kinds of people.

You can't honestly be comparing two teenage school shooters with a soldier who enlisted under his/her own will to fight overseas, was given proper evaluation, training and weapons to boot?

It's fucking sad that this happened, but it's even sadder that some people are saying "shit happens" or trying to defend this soldier's actions.

Our government puts a bunch of kids in a terrible situation with not much reasoning behind it, and you can't expect someone to not snap like that. You can't excuse something like this but most of the soldiers out there don't even understand what they are fighting for besides the notion of some vague "war on terror". This is why we were not successful in the Vietnam war and why we won't be in Afghanistan. I don't really blame soldiers on this, i really blame the government, and the men who put people in these situations.

if this was actually in america, people would be going ape shit. i respect soldiers and how they are under terrible conditions mentally, but this is unacceptable. just because he is a soldier in afghanistan doesnt magically give him a pass to shoot up 3 homes.

this sounds like terrorism to me. Its pretty disturbing how many people bash Mike O for posting current news on a war we are currently engaged it. The only reason Vietnam ended when it did is because of the people in the U.S. who saw these types of injustices and demanded a stop to it. We are in a very similar war and the only difference is the news you see on TV will not show all the atrocities like they did in the 60s.

Its about time we stand up and realize we're in a War that was never meant to have an end and we are the ones occupying and destroying a country and its people, and creating even more chaos than this previously war torn country has even seen. Lets stop acting like America has a right to be a world police and that Countries only hate the US because of our "freedom".

Its about time to wake up and face reality, the only reason the U.S. can so easily engage in Wars overseas is because we have never seen the harsh realities of war in our own country so our people have no idea what its like to lose their house, fortunes, and worst their entire families

this negates the positive effect of idk how many schools the western alliance built there. i mean you have to understand the people there too. you are very religious (think about pre-enlightement europe, if you burned a bible there, you would also have been killed) and a member of an army that clearly occupied your country goes apeshit and kills several people in their homes without any threat in there.

i think we can agree that we would all care a little more than some of you guys.

it makes me sick how there were all this "vibes"-threads/posts and shit going on during that school shooting and NO empathy whatsoever for a dozen afghan people that died as meaninglessly (the victim side is the only comparable one of those two situations).

"shit happens", i cannot believe it. why are afghan people not as worthy as americans? this is were the problem starts. we do not accept them as humans but are surprised when they do the same? seriously?

fuck humanity.

I can understand the pissing on dead soilders and burning of the book.. But killing people that are unarmed is rediculouse. Usually I go ham on mike-o's threads with anger cause we have the exact opposite opinions but I'm going to have to agree with him on this one. Idk how it turned into everyone disagreeing and shitting on this thread. Guy must have been crazy or something cause usually people that deliberately break a law try to get away? So maby he didn't know what he was doing in his state of mind.

totally agree.

i always remember that quote in "monster" from steppenwolf (i know i post that often, but its still true). obviously written under the impression of the korean/vietnam war:

"we dont know how to mind our own business, cause the world got to be just like us".

you know 9/11 was a huge tragedy but that revenge war didnt do anything but pushing the world closer to WWIII.

And you just touched upon the very essence of why America is where it is right now. USA always takes the offensive so that the fight never ends up here, and that should be appreciated. Whether or not we should be there I'll leave to personal opinions, but my point is don't underestimate what that philosophy has done for USA. So you're kind of just detailing a cyclical fallacy in that if we didn't engage overseas you can be sure more would happen on US soil.
