I won't comment on the original post, it doesn't deserve a response. As far as what it has become... Some of you might know that I'm a Marine. I've already served in Iraq, and have done a tour in the far east, I know what it's like from the other side of the arguement. I can tell you that as goes for at least 98% of the military community that we don't fight for the honor and and glory of our country. First above all else, we do what we're called upon, and if we fight for anything it's for the other guys fighting with us. So many times some of the guys I went to boot camp, r met along the way come back from their time in Iraq and just want to go back because they fear for their friends over there. And I constantly hear dtories about guys from my base being severely wounded and the only thing they think about while recovering is going back to protect and fight alongside his friends. There's no doubt a bond not unlike a brotherhood is formed in a wartime situation, and it's nothing to be mocked. A soldier's reasoning to join is nothing to be speculated upon, my reason was I felt indebted to my country for the freedoms I enjoy, It never crossed my mind that I wanted to fight for the honor of my country. For the people that are over there right now, they're just doing what they're told to do, and not ne time when I was over there during the war iteslf did I hear a nationalistic pump up speach being made. The speaches that were given to us only stated that we were there for the sole purpose to oust Saddam and free the people of Iraq. I won't speculate what the speaches are about these days. J.D., you might be smart, you might be a philosepher, and you do have a point as to how our media and public at large portrays a fighting man/woman... But you should know more than most that you can't believe everything you hear, cause there's always a spin. Support your troops, because we support eachother, I think that sums up my thoughts...

^ RIGHT ON... im tired of the news quite frankly. give me the weather and sports, not the bullshit lies day to day. i just tired of hearing the new say the same thing over and voer again, when they dont even know if its right or not. drowning the public with usless wrong info. i think their should be a law saying if you talk about false remarks you will be punished by law.

actually...the public do have a say in the decision...they vote for who makes the decision!!
so they have the biggest say in it...as for your supporting our troops, i applaud you even tho you are anti-war bcz most of the anti-war ppl just make portests, which make matters worse, and put down the army which hurts their self-esteem and screws things up even more...i dont like going to war either, but i know it is a part of life and there will always be a war to be fought somewhere..i just wished it wouldnt be us, but since we are the superpower, it is our duty to protect the needs of other nations.

^actually buddy i stated back in the 10th grade 'i was against war in every manner and i would not fight since i feel was does no good. i will not kill for any reason.'

this statement with the witness of the teacher and 10 other people will keep me out of the draft. and im not tryig to bullshit you either. look it up for all i care. its stated that if someone has commented before, with the eye witness of others, that he is against the whole killing aspect of life he shall be not drafted for any reason.

so keep telling me im going somewhere, CUZ IM NOT.

plus ive had too many football injuries and baseball injurris with torn hip flexers to the max and bum knees. so theirs no way in hell they want me. plus i cant see :) an no lasers hitting my eyes.

You're welcome... Although, to me it's just a job... I'm a Cobra helo mech, I've been in for 3 years and have still yet to get past E-3, it's a slow MOS to get promoted... Opinions, never the same, an argument that'll never end. Speculations, truth, lies, and myths... What we will never know, everyone already knows all too well. Aggrosk8, that's exactly what I was talking about. And the fact that you say you hope to be like that too some day... Jesus, that scares me. I hate to think there are more people who think that way, but at the same time, I know there are. If you're going to join the army, don't do it to be a hero, don't do it because it's inherently and automatically noble and honourable to fight for your country, because it isn't. Do it for the right reasons.

wow, jd. just because i want to be completely selfless, doesnt mean im gonna join the army. to be selfless means, you DONT care for the glory or honor or respect. to be selfless means to work in the dark where noone will ever know what youve done. and to do it with that attitude in mind. i want to live my life doing right and helping others, and i want to be able to live my life without caring if i ever get credit for anything

im sorry i want to help this country jd, maybe its just an inherant flaw in my recessive genetic makeup, i only wish my children will be as perfect as you. i prob wont end up as a soilder, but i do plan on someday joining the FBI, to serve domestically.

WW2 is a totally 100% differnet issue. although i probably wouldnt have suppoerted that one either becuase we only got into the war becuasse hitler was gonna take over the world if we didnt; we didnt actually care about the jews. and also, my satatment does not appily to people who were drafted!!! (you will also notice i say 'this post does not appily to people who signed up to the army jsut for money or educational reasons'. what i am refering to is known as the poverty draft (getting poor people to fight for us becuase the army pays them) so naturally i would be sympathetic to people who were drafted.

chances are he will probably be weeded out within the first few weeks. Contrary to popular belief, SF are not blood-thirsty rambos, rather diplomats that can fight. I know this because I read a book that was about 700 pages long about their training and such.

Well, the Army is paying 100% of my University tuition plus books. My entire undergraduate degree, with possibly more.
I've gotten to see much of the world because of the army. I have received good training, aquired good skills, and have 'world' experience.

So, hope you enjoy your HUGE loan and paying back your education for the next 10yrs after graduating.

And someone else will be going in your place. I'm a conscientious objector too, but I still oppose the draft because it means that people (who may even be unaware of the attainability of C.O. status) will be sent against their will to another country to kill and die. I can't and won't stand for that.

No, WWII really wasn't that different. We just look back at it through rose-tinted glass, but it was a horrible war and there were better ways to win than using nuclear force. For more on that see my article 'A Memorial to the 42,000' here

Hmmmmm.
The states were isolationist and they didnt do anything anywhere. They only went to war because they were attacked first. This pissed people off.

The states are now cosmopolitan, or seemingly 'aggressors,' going into areas that is in the worlds' interest to make better. This pisses people off.

to the ignorant asshole who started this post... first off, if i ever meet you, i'm gonna punch you dead in the face. bottom line. i have no idea where you got this half-cocked notion that the state of whats goin' on over there is peachy... i've had an uncle over there for over a year, and it isn't fuckin' peachy. You try wakin' up everyday in 135 degree heat, puttin' on 80 lbs of gear and protecting the integrity and values of what you believe in, not to mention, the 150 soldiers my uncle commands in Tikrit, and their families back home, as well as his, and all the while you have those motherfuckers planting bombs as our EOD teams (explosive ordinance disposal) have to go find them before they kill another half dozen troops, or themselves. The guys over there may not agree with the war itself, or how its being conducted, but they honor the vows they took to protect a country that's been violated, as well as our own, and they are standing to not let it happen again. I'm not starting a 'agree with the war or not' arguement, but regardless you ill-minded jackass, you should support every fucking soldier we have over there, and the civilians that are working for haliburton, ya know, the guys getting kidnapped and beheaded... if you took your immature uneducated head out of your own ass, and listened to what is going on and took the time it would take to understand it, you wouldn't have opened your mouth and proved how fucking ignorant you are.

if you have the inclination to even try to have a response to that, i gladly await the opportunity to read more mindless fuckin' banter from an idiot.

no, i'm not saying i must be right, but considering i get emails monthly from my uncle vaguely telling me about the missions he commands and how many people he knows that have died, and the conditions... shall i keep going? without being there myself, i have a pretty solid base of knowledge on whats goin' on... i'm not stating any personal opinions.

that is the quoate of mine where i mention peachey. if you notices, i was saying that we act like they are peachey, when they are not! Bush acts like everything is going over well, just as planned. Well, I get to respond! I think you as well as many other on this site have a love for misconstruing crystal clear statments. I said we only fight when we're called upon, so where in there did I say we fight when our county's honor is under attack? I remember about 3 years ago a couple planes we're driven into some buildings in NYC, that, was a physical attack. A war on terrorism was declared, and since Saddam was a known harborer of terrorists, and a financier we attack them. Since you're basically focusing on our present situation I used that as an example of being called upon. Now, that we were sent there to fight, and we're still there I used the comraderie that is formed in the heat of battle for the main reason to carry on. Do you really think that if everyone couldn't give a fuck about everyone else that anyone would be out there fighting today? I think I spelled it out pretty clear that I joined the military to give back to my country because of my inherent debt that all of us owe to those who have fought and died for what we have today. Just a side note on that jaross, WW2 was not started because of the threat from Hitler, remember Pearl Harbor? FDR was doing everything in his power, negotiations, trade agreements to keep our country neutral. It wasn't until the Japanese attacked our country and killed thousands of our fighting men and civilians in an unprovoked surprise attack that we came into WW2. Because of military alliances that were in place back then; by declaring war on Japan we were also declaring war on Germany because of their alliance with Japan, although I think it was Hitler that declared war on us before we officialy targeted them... Please just read the post, I personally can't believe this thing is still going, were there pictures of hot girls on this thread earlier or something?

they may harbor terrorists but i have yet to see or even hear of proof that they were linked to al kida. there are many differnet people that hate us and all for lagitmate reasons. (not saying that the spt 11 attacks were justified but...)
