Down Rail Zolly Shot

well you need some knowledge about the technique so heres an example

i was wondering if its ever been attempted in a ski film or edit. onto a down rail specifically.


if so, or if anyone has experiance with the shot, please comment +K. ive done the shot in class but never with my own rig let alone on snow or on the mountain. i think it would be insane if done correctly shooting a down rail or other features thoughts?

It's possible to have downhill dollies. I've seen them used before in movies. I have never seen a dolly on a down rail for a ski movie, but I don't see why not. Seems possible, it would need strong support into the ground, though.

are you talking about the dolly moving backward along the rail as the skier is coming towards it?

no a zollys achieved while you move the dolly towards your subject while you zoom out with your lense or you can do it opposite (zoom in while pulling out)

duncan lake used to do that shit. not with a dolly but i think handheld. just zoom out at the same speed ur skiing toward the rail

Youre talking about hitchcock zooms.

^ yes better known as a hitchcock effect or something similar. i learned them as zollys (zooming on a dolly) but exactly the same thing.

was thinking it be interesting to apply while filming a jib, i think it would work better then filming a kicker or something.

did not watch the edit before posting. but that was exactly what i was thinking about. but again maybe in a more controlled setting with the camera actually on a dolly and if was successful apply slow motion.

but that was killer and prolly kinda difficult.

Dolly Zoom, Hitchcock Zoom, Vertigo Effect it has a bunch of names. It's very doable, I would try with skiing if it weren't for the fact that my dolly is huge and a bitch to carry around accompanied by the fact that the only zoom lens I have is the cheap, not smooth 18-135. With manual lenses and no follow focus system it's a tricky effect.
