A father and his 2 little kids stood at the center of the top of the landing of this 50 foot jump for no less than 5 minutes while I stood at the top waiting to drop, but too far away for them to hear me say anything. Gapers and park go together like chinese food and pudding.

stratton had you take a test before they let u in the park but this was years ago havent done any thing like that since, it did help kept out people that take the sled down.

I agree OP. In Whistler you need a Blackpark pass to hit the XL features. They make you sign a waiver and fill out forums and stuff. Its a great idea. That way so little kids don't ride through the knuckles of 60ft+ jumps. I wish my mountain had this, T-Martin almost killed a kid on the jump yesterday.

I was just fooling around in a smaller park at some random mountain (I forget which one hahah) ad I went off of a 15ish door jump and hucked a 5 and BOOM little girl and her father fly in from the left, right into the landing and I almost took out the little girl...

this might be a dumb question, but what is involved in a park pass?

like do you just go and pay for one? or do you have to like, pass a "test" to get one?

Idk if there's a test, but I'm pretty sure a park pass is like you pay 15 more bucks on your season pass and you're allowed in the park. some hills don't allow people with rentals in the park.

You just pay something arround 25$ and sign some papers. then you're allowed to go in the park whenever you want. You need to be 16 years old to sign the paper by yourself.

Its $30. But since jumps are 60+ feet. You need a waiver and stuff so if you get hurt

No, Le Relais has a jump park and does not require a park pass. In fact, the center doesnt even want to put in a gate to discourage gapers....but yet they groom powder for safety reasons.

Stratton still has a quiz...But the quiz has no fucking purpose at all. It is the easiest thing, and it doesn't help keep gapers out at all. A friend of mine has been constantly emailing Stratton because he is pissed at all the little kids in the parks. Last week, I hit a step up, just a straight air, and landed right on a little kids ass.

At Stevens pass in WA you have to watch a 10 min video, sign a waiver, then pay 5 for a season long pass (or free for a single day), sadly it really doesn't help much

working park crew the amount of stupid shit i see people doing in the park is absurd. we just recently got given the authority to clip peoples passes for doing stupid shit like sitting in landings or trying to hit features we're working on or any other dumb shit. rule with an iron fist to make the park a better place.

Sad, my home mountain gave me a warning for skiing backcountry. Next time i get caught i get my pass ripped off. Does this make any sence? I've showed them the picture on their facebook page and no reaction.

By way of an exemple: If i hold a 12 gage and shot 3 feet beside the kid, it would have the same effect.

I am forwarding to see the director and get this real clear.
I need help to get this park pass. If any of you got any ideas, please feel free to share!

i was pissed about stupid people make the park dangerous last year, so i talked to management at my mountain about enforcing the park "rules" which is on the orange sign posted at the top of the park, and the agreed to make it a pass pull worthy offense

Thank god the little girl was wearing a helmet. People sit behind the jumps at my local hill and one kid had his head jibbed by a skier doing a backflip when he stood up. Unfortunetly he wasn't wearing a helmet and ski patrol closed down the whole park

The simplest solution would be fences at the top and a mandatory gap jump of about 10 feet for the entrance.

park passes are a good idea. but at the same time i hate having to take that 15 minutes to take a test or have to pay extra to ride the park. I know its such a small requirement but when i got riding id rather just go and cruise and not have to worry about it.

i 100% agree with OP. yes, it can be annoying paying for the pass, but i think its better to have it than not. at my home mountain, you just sign your life away, pay $10, and you're good to go. at that hill, you will not find anyone in the park who shouldn't be there; it's fantastic. way safer too.

LOL they never got something over L features and they made the jumps smaller this year than the previous.. If you found that VDP have some pretty big features.. U should go to Mont-Orignal and shred the Moose Park..

idk why this isn't standard operating procedure. that, and more patrols through the parks to make it safer for both US and THEM. it seems the patrols at the mountain closest to me just skim over the park and this has been my experience everywhere.

When you think about it, park skiing must seem ridiculous to any normal person.

People weighing 180lbs with all their gear throwing themselves at 40mph off jumps that send them 60ft+. Or alternatively, spinning around, again at high speed, on narrow pieces of metal.

To any normal person, that sounds like a perfect recipe for injury. Which is why park passes are needed - to minimise the risk to others, and to us, in what is, an incredibly high risk sport.

This would work but ive seen what happens plenty of times when 50 or so gapers hit a jump without the speed to clear the knuckle. Result is a new knuckle 5 ft closer and a trench where the knuckle used to be. This is indoor so the snow isnt exactly set but gapers would still kill their shins just to cut people off and stand on the edge of those lovely big flat table landings and take in the view

There have been some valiant efforts - Stevens Pass for example - but in the end, the cost of such programs and already strained budgets keep a lot of what needs to be done for safe parks from being done. Sadly, I really think it'll take a gaper or little kid being hit and killed for anything to really change. Only a matter of time too...

Just like safety in all other sports. Someone has to die/get seriously mangled for something to change. I am all in favor of one. CBK had one an it was great. Especially since you needed one to get on the park lift. I would love if keystone did that.

At my home mountain (Okemo), they say they require a park pass, but there's never a person attending the enterance to the large sized park. I haven't even re-upped my pass for this season and have never been questioned. Plenty of gapers are making it in and just hanging out on the landings causing trouble for everyone who is actually trying to ski and improve.

I'm all for park passes, but if we just let everybody get them, or let people slip into the bigger parks without getting checked, then there's really no point. I wish there were some way that the mountain could feasably test a skiiers ability to ride the features, rather than their ability to pay a fee or answer five ridiculously easy safety questions before issuing a park pass. Otherwise our parks are just going to remain crowded with the kind of people who make it dangerous for themselves and anyone legitimately trying to progress.

My hill has them and it helps a lot, still have idiots who pay the 5 dollars to get one though. Some dude cut across the landing the other day and I didn't see him so I landed switch and knocked the fuck out of him. Thank god he was a bigger guy instead of a little kid.
