So I graduated high school in 2007, at the time I was passionate by photography and was sure that it was what i wanted to do with my life. I then went to college for 4 years in commercial photography and Media and arts.
I started to work last summer as a wedding photographer, got published in a couple of magazines and some of my photos are now pretty popular on this website.
BUT, I realised after 2 years that it wasnt going to pay the bills and that its a really hard field.
After a few months of questioning myself I decided to go back to school in Physical Therapy.

The thing is, when i was in highschool, I didnt care about maths or physics because I knew I didnt need it to go in the photography program.

Now since its required to get in the program I want to, I have to go back to Adult school, to finish my Maths Chem and Physics. IT SUCKS

Not sure how it works where you are but if you can , make sure you get all your classes done when you graduate, that way you dont have to go back.

In Canada you can graduate with Maths 416, I got maths 426 , I need maths 536 to get into the program I want. Its called Strong maths, I dont know how it works in the us sorry.

Im not taking math this year, and i didn't take science last year but I've completed my course requirements and the requirements of almost all universities in the U.S. Didn't your school have required courses?

Orrrr, do what you want to do in high school. If you want to follow a more artistic path do it, just be conscious that your choices have consequences. Alright, so that pretty much restated what op said so disregard the orrrr.

Well Quebec must be retarded then ha.
When you get to Secondary five , which is last year of highschool.
You only need to do one science, I did History and Biology, Shouldve done Physics and Chem.
But at the time I didnt need Physics and Chem. to get into photography.
Then In secondary 4 you can do Maths 416-426 or 436. In sec 4 I did 436, failed, but I go 426.
Secondary 5 you can do 516-526 or 536 , Since i didnt get 436 in sec 4, I though it would be easy to get , so I did 436 but since i suck I failed.
So i graduated with my maths 426, I need 536 to get into the program I want so.
Recap.
I need to do Chem and Physics of sec 5 and I need to do Maths 436 and Maths 536

Not really sure what you were alluding to in your OP but if you recommend people test out of science classes in high school (AP's) just so they don't have to take them in college that would be a bad idea...

I mean it is one thing to recommend taking them in high school so you get an advantage when taking college science classes, but just to do it so you don't have to do it again is not the right attitude if you want to pursue science major...

O yea and my biggest regret in high school was not taking any AP's, I wish I tried harder so I would have more of an advantage in college now.

It is kinda blatant that photography is not a money making career. How did you get through college thinking it would be alright? I am sorry but all this knowledge is kinda obvious.

I was pretty successful in what i was doing but unmotivated to fight against other people to do jobs.
I still make a decent pay and im talented at what i do but its not a regular job .
Change of paths happend, I didnt think I would fail when i started studying.

and im not saying it to be a dick, nor do you absolutely NEED it, but you really close a lot of doors if you don't at least take a few sciences. it's very short-sighted to think that you will never need to have fundamental requirements of most programs out there today.

to me, not taking math is like not taking english and learning adequate language skills. in such a technologically advanced world, sciences are crucial in being able to pursue a higher education in any discipline.

I took maths and science. I just didnt take advanced maths and advanced science, PLEASE read what i wrote bellow. I didnt think i the time i would need advanced maths and science because I was getting into an art program .

Now we are saying the same thing, I made a mistake, and didnt do them.
I am saying, do them , just to make sure.

Not trying to be mean, but it just read that you looked like you took the lower level of math (applied). When you take stuff like that, you'll graduate but not have the right type of math at the right level to get into some sciencey programs. I know how you feel about not being super into maths/sciences. I'm taking pre-ap chem and bio, and academic physics and they suck. But I did it just to make sure I didn't close any doors for next year, and it turns out next year that for the international relations program I don't need sciences. It just sucks because we all change our minds. I wasn't trying to be mean or offend you but if you didn't take academic maths, just applied then you'll have to go back and redo it because they're what's necessary for science. I hate having to make huge decisions about careers at a young age, because we might not always make ones best for us. I wish you the best of luck with the new program and hopefully you'll still be able to do some photography on the side.

In Australia you can drop maths and science in 10th grade and get to pick whatever other classes you want to do. The only required class is one of either English (Mainstream), English Language (Below Mainstream) or English Literature (Advanced).

Why are you changing your career path to physical therapy- where you're probably going to have to take calculus and physics (both extremely math heavy) if you couldn't pass high school math? I'm not trying to be a dick but.... there are other careers to switch to.

No? If I wanted to go into the trades I wouldn't need either, and I would probably be making 50,000 in my first year as a plumber. While your paying for a 20k a year Political Science course at college, which will give you probably no use in life.

this. I took work place math when I was grade 11 and didn't take any science or math courses in my senior year in highschool. I'm current'y in a film production course and accepted into a three year Advertising and Marketing course for next year. If I do well I can land a post grad course at a University. I can do all of that without science or math. Just because you took all academic courses in highschool doesn't mean your going to be successful in life, it's about work ethic and who try the hardest not about who's book smart. Maybe some you will realize this over time, University isn't the only route through life. People land more jobs from colleges a year than University, so you can come down from your level and suck it soft.

I'm about to graduate from Ohio State with a degree in Industrial Systems & Engineering. I took five levels of calc through ODE's, three levels of calc-based physics through quantum theory, and 4 levels of chem through O-chem.

In high school I took AP calc and AP chem.

Yes, high school classes certainly helped me through my college years. Yes, average starting salary for going through all that bullshit is a bit higher. Don't ever try to force a round peg into a square hole though. Gotta truly enjoy what your doing or you will be one unhappy individual. The math/science road isn't the path for everyone and that is perfectly ok.

The most important thing is having a plan/vision for your future and putting in the effort to have it come to fruition.

Everyone has to take math and science at some point in high school. In most areas, however, you can elect which level you would like to take them at ex: regular, college-prep, AP ect. In addition, some schools will let students pursue other areas of study the last 2 years; these will be related and qualify for a math/science but are not the true hardcore fundamentals of the sciences.

Basically if you don't want to take them you can evade taking all but the very basic math/sciences pretty easily.

Okay. Here we have (if the system hasn't changed too much in the past... seven years):

-The choice for Short Math (6 courses) or Long Math (13 courses), all compulsory depending on choice, you can start with Long courses and drop down to short ones, but usually not the other way around

-Two compulsory Physics courses

-Two compulsory Chem courses

After all is said and done, you need to have passed at least one course of a certain subject (electives) or all the compulsory courses to be able to write it in your "finals", the Matriculation Examination.

you guys have a weird education system. I'm not saying it's bad. but quebec does have the highest highschool dropout rate by far. (of provinces)

Certainly seems to be more thorough in Finland. There will be a "final" in each course but not at the end of your high school study.

Seems to be similar in the ability to choose how deeply you want to study the subject though.

As an aside:
The professional world seems to be evolving to a state in which a college degree is the norm and necessary to obtain a well paying job (obviously there are exceptions). How the generations before us viewed "college" can be compared to a modern day Master's/Doctorate degree which only a select few achieve.

Math/sciences tend to pay more because they are perceived as more difficult; no sense in doing something you hate just for the sake of a dollar though.

True, at least now in our system students, instead of being forced to write Math, they can choose between Swedish and Math, both still being turning stones to a lot of students.

But as you said, as companies and universities are looking for more specific types of students, the ability of crafting your own diploma and graduate certificate from the beginning of HS greatly increases and eases the ability of choice for employers and colleges in what they are looking for.

Someone with a barely passed English, but top grade in Physics, Chemistry and Math? More than welcome! Et cetera.

You have to do 12 "units" including 4 unites of English (Any type) in your last two years of high school. Per Semester you get one unit per subject you take.

The only requirement past year 10 is english plus the required amount of units in other subjects. Obviously our university have requirements but most require english unless you're doing science, commerce or something related to that. Law for example only requires a high overall score and a certain english score. So all you have to do is get a pass (45% if you have completed all coursework and re-sat all failed exams/ tests) in Science and Maths at a 10th grade level.

You should do math and science classes even if you don't plan on having a career that directly utilizes math or science, because taking those classes will make you a more intelligent, critically thinking, and well rounded person in general. Also, if you have the chance, take as many philosophy classes as you can because they're awesome.

It's true you don't really need math and science for photo/arts careers, though it is helpful.

But on the other side of the coin, what you do need for such a career that isn't usually necessary for a math/science career is business/marketing/management smarts, networking skills, and people skills. Honestly, some people plain can't succeed in the arts careers because they just aren't the type of person to always be on the hustle doing self-promotion; myself included. It's all about making connections and that's certainly not easy.

While they're very different academically, they still require just as much effort/smarts, just in different forms.

On a side note, my sister is studying physical therapy and loves it. It's no med school, but the courses she's taking are definitely beyond me at this point.

I am taking enriched functions right now and I chose two math classes for next year, including calculus. But I am Asian so that's normal. My school doesn't offer ap or ib classes so that sucks

Id suggest 4 years of math and science for anyone going to college after HS. All of my friends only have 4-5 classes a day because you're not required to have them Senior year here. While I was tempted tondo the same, I knew I coul get a year ahead by taking AP Chem and Calc. Also take meaningful classes that will challenge you. Im pretty sure none of my friends are going to be geologists when they grow up but theyre all taking geology because its quote, "easy as shit." bottom line is to think ahead and takenclasses that you feel will prepare you the best for your intended makor in college while also keeping a nice balance incase you decide to change your mind.
