i am absolutely not being sarcastic. as a permit holder, i really have no desire to carry a gun with me to class, however the previous laws prohibited me from keeping a gun in my car. i rarely go home after i leave campus and the laws made it difficult if not impossible for me to carry elsewhere after leaving campus. and if i feel like i want to carry to class, you bet your ass i will. its not the permit holders you need to worry about. permit holders know the laws, have demonstrated the ability to safely handle firearms, and have passed intense background checks.

i wonder how many of these school shootings would have been prevented, if a student with a concealed carry happened to be there when the shooter first drew his weapon and started firing?

having a permit or not would mean absolutely nothing to somebody who wants to shoot up a school. i dont see how this would mean anything but a safer school environment.

people feel the need to carry a gun at all times because there are fucked up areas of the U.S. where it might actually be necessary for your own safety. i have a concealed carry permit, but i hardly ever carry a gun with me, its more so i can keep one in my car because i like to go shooting a lot, and hunting sometimes. shit my dad used to take his rifle into his highschool, and keep it in his locker because he would go hunting in the morning before school. it was completely normal to do. I do have a small pistol i rarely carry. it just depends on where im going to be.

i had two dumb ass kids pull a knife on me and my friend a couple years back because as we walked by my friend laughed at something we were talking about, being the stupid thug ass kids they were, they took it the wrong way and grabbed my friend by the shirt and cornered us against a wall threatening to cut us.

now they probably would never have done it, but that type of shit does happen, and being the dumb shits they were i wouldnt be too surprised if they did try to stab one of us, my concealed carry would have been extremely handy when we got into that situation.

the fact is, the more law abiding citizens who carry guns, the less power the criminals have. we have had multiple threads on this, and there is countless evidence and statistics that prove it, and i have not seen anything that actually disproves it.

I dunno, man. The whole risk/reward ratio just isn't there for me. Don't you think whipping out a hand gun would have escalated the situation a bit? What if one of his bros had a gun? Yeah, you might be a level headed person, but you've got no idea how an imbalanced person (i.e., thugs, criminals, etc.) will act under stressful situations. Everyone's a law abiding citizen until they break it and mind reading hasn't been perfected yet. More weapons is gonna lead to more shooting and/or less reluctance to poppin' one off in the long-run. The whole ''guns for everyone makes us safer" notion doesn't resonate with me. The root cause of violence is people. Point. Blank. Period. Not to mention you're dealing with vast socioeconomic division. Yet again, I'm Canadian; therefore, I don't know what it's really like.

look at the other thread about this topic from a couple months ago, its got all the statistics you would want.

in that situation yes its possible he might have flipped out more and it could have escalated. him pulling out a gun though? if either of them had one they would have pulled it out already. and i forget the numbers but when i took my CCW classes they told us the statistics but basically, when you pull a gun on someone who's threatening you, they are almost always going to back off. its very rare that they will try to attack you. and the plus side of having a gun is, if they do, you shoot them, if they pull a gun on you then you shoot them. at that point im 110% concerned with my well being and i could care less about some psycho whos trying to kill me.

anyway to put the many pages in the last thread into a summary, when more people have guns, crimes are less likely to take place because there is much more risk for the criminal. when someone is attacked, robbed, whatever, the situation is resolved without the good guy being hurt.

but really, its all about preventing the crime from happening in the first place. a criminals much more likely to rob, attack, rape etc.. someone in a city with strict gun laws where its almost a guarantee the victim isnt armed. than in some town in texas where everyone has a gun under their pillow.

You're a fucking idiot. There are reasons that even the police don't want citizens to involve themselves in situations like this. What happens when the student heroically pulls out his gun and in the heat of the moment accidentally shoots a classmate standing beside the gunman? Or when he forgets to switch the safety because he's never been in a real situation? The police are trained to handle this stuff. Students are not, end of story.

I'm Canadian and would be really stoked to legally CCW here. I've been threatened with a shotty and a rifle before... laws don't really stop anyone from having a gun if they want it. may as well have the right to own them if you're a law abiding citizen.

Thats great, but you want to know the probability you will be involved in a school shooting? 1 in 1,700,000.

Let me do some math (call me out if this is incorrect) if there is a 1 in 1,700,000 chance of dying in a school shooting, and 25% of public shootings are stopped by citizens with guns, then you have approximately a 1 in 6,800,000 chance of being saved by a citizen with a gun.

Another way to thing about it is that a school can expect to have a shooting on campus once every 12,000 years.

"Oh, and the next time a lunatic hopped up on prozak starts shooting people in school would you recommend notifying them that they are breaking the law before or after you throw a book and hid under a desk?"

Haha, I love guns I own a 12 gauge and a 20 gauge shotgun, as well as a .22 rifle and I'm planning on buying a .30-06 this summer. I don't love gun owners, and I don't see the point of carrying a concealed weapon because you think you're some big hero or your penis is too small. Obviously some people carry concealed weapons because of direct threats to their personal safety, and they should be able to take their guns wherever. But not every John Wayne should be able to take his handy pea-shooter into my math class.

I'm not saying that banning concealed weapons will stop some crazy person from bringing guns on campus. I'm saying that the remote chance they will shouldn't justify allowing anybody with a concealed weapons license to bring a weapon onto campus. I am much more comfortable putting my safety in the hands of the police than some kid who thinks he's a hero.

So approximately 1 child under the age of 15 dies every other day from unintended gunfire due to concealed handguns. Well its been about 11 years since this peer reviewed study was put forward. 11 time 365 is 4,015, divide that by two and you have about 2,007 children under the age of 15 who have been killed since then. I'd say concealed weapons are far more dangerous than school shootings. But then again, you don't care about them.

If i'm "too far gone" then what would you say to this guy, John Woods a doctoral student at the University of Texas who's girlfriend was killed in the Virginia Tech shootings. He said "it's completely ideological, it's not about campus safety at all," when he was asked why he opposed a bill in Texas that would allow concealed weapons on college campuses. Would you claim he didn't care about his girlfriend?

"Hi there. Sorry about your loss it is truly unfortunate that your girlfriend was killed. The friends and families of 31 other people share your pain but being a doctoral student doesn't automatically make your assessment/opinion more valid."

He would probably reply with something like this

"Guns are bad. More guns = more crime. Guns are only used to kill people. Black scary guns should be illegal. I'm in college, therefore I'm an enlightened individual. Obama 2012!"

At that point I would walk away because he is too far gone.

I will definitely consider reading it, it sounds interesting, although it sounds like its mostly against gun regulation and pro concealed weapons. I'm not against concealed weapons, I just think the only valid reason to have one on a school campus is direct personal threats.

I'm not going to argue with you because I was debating woozy and he seems like an intelligent person and uses facts to back his points.

Besides, the fact that he was a doctoral student wasn't even the point, it was just background info provided by the author of the article. The point was he lost a loved one in a school shooting and was still against concealed weapons on school campuses. But it sounds like your just looking for a fight with a liberal person.
