Let's start with some background. Libya was an Italian colony during the 1920s and 1930s. During this time the Italians carried out various "pacification" campaigns against the Libyans, in which tens of thousands died. The country was not liberated until the allies drove out the Italians and Germans. Desecrating this cemetery is the equivalent of an angry French mob destroying the D-Day memorial at Normandy. The level of stupidity of these Libyans goes beyond words.

All the Libyans in this video would be dead if not for the British (and NATO). Gaddafi had the rebels on their heels and was ready to wipe them all out. Their last stronghold was Benghazi, where this cemetery is located. The residents of Benghazi begged the British and the French to save them, and unfortunately they agreed to. Now we see their repayment. I don't remember anything like this occurring under Gaddafi. In fact, life under Gaddafi wasn't all that bad.

Now, as far as these people representing a small minority, that is bullshit. Let's take a look at neighboring Egypt, a country that many claimed was undergoing a "secular" transition to democracy. Among their political parties that recently took power, the Salafists are the most fanatical. Now, in the recent elections they won 24% of the seats in the new parliament. The Salafists can most accurately be compared to the Taliban, especially in their goal of implementing total Sharia law and their desire for the destruction of all non-Muslim history (they've proposed destroying or covering the pyramids in wax, the Taliban blew up the Bamiyan Buddha). That means a good 24% of the nation are militant on an Al-Qaeda/Taliban level, and are driven by religious frenzy. Libya, compared to Egypt, is even more religiously fanatical. Taking a conservative estimate, I would say at least 24% of the population of Libya are Salafists or Salafist sympathizers. If we are to believe that the rats in this video are Salafists, as has been claimed by the Salafists themselves, then a quarter of the population support the desecration of WW2 cemeteries. I do not call that a small group.

Now, I haven't even mentioned the Muslim Brotherhood. They are every bit as fanatical as the Salafists, but are much better at concealing it. By their own admission their stated ultimate goal is the implementation of Sharia law and, more ambitiously, the reestablishment of a Middle Eastern Caliphate to expand into the West. I'm not making this shit up, it's all online if you want to look it up. Hamas and Al-Qaeda are both offshoots of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was started by an Egyptian who was inspired by Hitler. The Muslim Brotherhood won about 37% of the parliamentary vote in Egypt. If we combine just the Salafists and the Brotherhood, we see a nation where 61% of the people are religious zealots, who believe that 7th century Islamic Sharia law should be the law of the land. This "radical Islamic minority" doesn't look much like a minority to me, it looks more like a majority. Ever since taking power in Egypt (and Tunisia), actual minorities like the Coptic Christians and Jews have been persecuted severely. This is being done on a national level, in ways far worse than all the years of dictatorship combined. Under Mubarak, Egypt was a secular nation in which religious parties were harassed and banned.

So to conclude, I can say with full conviction that yes, the Arab spring is absolute bullshit. Any other conclusion is just wishful thinking. The governments taking power in the Arab spring countries are the Islamic variety of fascism. The West has handed them power on a silver platter.

I'm not an expert on the Lebanese civil war. However, I know the Maronite Christians of Lebanon have been forced into militancy. The only thing Muslims understand is power, and in order to survive the Maronite Christians exert power. Same for Israel, it's about self-preservation.

And comparing the old testament to the koran is asinine. The Koran and the teachings of the prophet Muhammad are the equivalent of a western constitution in the Middle East. No country on Earth bases their laws off of obscure verses in the old testament.

You'd have the equivalent of your present-day theocratic Muslim state. So until you can find me a Christian or Jewish state where such scriptures are written directly into law, I suggest you get lost. I can name plenty of Muslim states that have those same commands written into law. Not to mention all the Muslim families in Europe who have carried out those same commands on their own family.

So please, find me one present-day example of any of those being religiously sanctioned on an international level outside of Islam. If not, please shut the fuck up.

Colonialization implies control. Saudi Arabia and Iran were never controlled by any Western countries. The closest it got was part of Saudi Arabia under the Ottoman Empire. Which, for the most part, was Islamic anyways. Afghanistan was never under British rule.

Wasn't colonized but 'indirectly' under British rule.

Kabul got independence from the Crown in 1920s, implying the rest of the country was under the control of the British is unrealistic.

Islam is a religion, not an ethnicity.

Iranians are ethnically Persians, Turkey are ethnically Turkish. Both originated from the central plains of Asia. Arabs originate from the Arabian peninsula. Yemen, Oman, UAE, Jordan are examples of Arab nations.

It's absolutely just as important, though. Saudi Arabia might not have exactly been a direct COLONY of any European nation, but they certainly have been in bed with the western world since oil was found there/The Ottomans sided with the Kaiser... and seeing as what, probably 90% of the Saudi economy is petroleum based and therefore requires direct dealings with the west for almost the entire lifeblood of revenue in the country? I'd call it a Psudo-colony if you really want to go there. Once it runs out of oil, they're downright BONED because the west wont give a shit anymore.

...That's further from the Arab world than Iran OR Turkey... I'd say the Pashtun people are closer related to the Mongols...

i would disagree that it has something to do with the religion itself, but more how its practiced today.

a good example are the crusades and the changing occupations of jerusalem. muslims (when in power) were normally very liberal and didnt put down other religions in complete contrast to christians of that era who blindly erased hundreds of villages and cities.

I agree with you, but you were disputing the religious faith, not the actions of the religions themselves. You said something along the lines of islam is more militant than christianity or judaism which is not true. Whats true is the people in Islam are more militant than christians and Jews.

The difference between muslims and christians/jews is that the muslims actually follow whats written in their holy book.

If all the faiths were equally militant, then you're saying that the people in the Middle East have some kind of ingrained ethnic propensity to violence? I tend to believe it is because their faith, much more so than Christianity or Judaism, encourages them towards violence. No Christian or Jew believes there are going to be 40 virgins waiting for them in Heaven, yet this view is widespread amongst Muslims "martyrs".

It is no doubt a backwards faith, and it is definitely more militant that Judeo-christian faiths but no by too much.

In a way i feel like Islam is going through its crazy fundamentalist period similar to that of the inquisitions. All I know is that the fucked up and crazy nature of the middle east is not being helped in any way by Islam, and in fact Islam is the catalyst for way more despair and violence in the region.

I would almost bet my life on the hypothesis that if you took away Islam from the middle east you would have most of the violence cease to exist, governments become less corrupt, and there would be more transparency in regards to political figures.

I feel extremely bad for Arab children who are, against their will, brainwashed into believing in a lot of nonsense (I also feel bad for children of all faiths who are indoctrinated into a belief system without any choice), but especially in the middle east because of the extreme fundamentalist point of view that leads to the things such as the stoning to death of women for adultery.

almost any religion/culture has/d a special treatment reserved for those who die on a battlefield.

off the top of my head: the aztecs, spartians and norse tribes. even the early christians explicitly manipulated jesus' peaceful message (if that were his words) to allow christians in the army and declare certain wars as "rightful" (bellus iustum).

even our western culture holds high respect for soldiers (especially americans because you actually fought in wars over the last decades) and especially those who "sacrifice" their lives. the general mindset does not differ tooo much.

my idea WHY its a little less militant and violent in certain countries (europe/north america) is simply because of education and literacy. only this has the power to overcome hate and the tradition of terror. weapons only go far, and we see that in afghanistan and iraq
