This. That's what a deposit is-- it's to pay for him to hold it for you. He loses his chances of selling it to someone else during the time he's holding it for you.
I'm in the process of planning a wedding, and I have to put deposits down on everything. If I cancel, I lose my deposit.
I think you mean if they are able to get someone else to take the reservation, I get my deposit back. If they gave it to someone else BEFORE I canceled that defeat the whole purpose of the deposit-- which is to reserve something.
This isn't the standard policy, it's really them doing you a favor-- often times this is done out of good faith because deposits for venues can run pretty high.
So far I haven't come across this in any of the things I have booked. piano ($300 deposit), food ($500 deposit), venue ($1100 deposit), band ($500 deposit).
OK. here's the deal-- if the $10 is not an EXCHANGE for holding the jacket, and to be applied toward the purchase price, then what was the point of the $10?
If he gives meowzers back the money, then he held the jacket for free. Why would bmo hold his jacket and turn down other offers for free? He wouldn't-- he did it because there was a deposit of $10 along with a promise to purchse.
Meowzers failed to uphold his end of the contract-- to purchase the jacket-- and because he kept bmo from being able to sell it to others, bmo is at a loss and deserves to keep the money.
It isn't up to bmo to teach kids lessons, assume people don't know how deposits work, or take into consideration meowzers health problems. It's a business transaction- take emotion out of it. Also, bmos post was cold/harsh, because he was probably fed up on being patient/waiting for meowzers to get back to him.
