Alyeska Stands up to T-Rice

From the looks of it (on Alyeska Park and Pipe FB page), Alyeska stopped T-Rice from riding in a closed area. After all the recent avalanche deaths in the PNW, and T-Rices asshole shenanigans with the pilot in the art of flight, I'm glad to see someone stand up for taking mother nature seriously.

I'm not the worlds biggest T-Rice fan, so I think this is funny. In my opinion, riding should be about having fun and having respect for the mountain and people in general, neither of which Travis seems to do well.

Discuss?

yes because you know him personally and the avy training he has had... oh yeah and he def. knows more about alyeska than the ski patrol that has been there before he knew what the BC was... god you kids are fucking retards.

you watch his movies and you assume he knows everything but you don't get that these guys normally go out to the bc with GUIDES. ignorance, again... not surprising.

Most permanent closures are there for good reason... many of which have the potential for large slides that can endanger not only you (not that a badass like you would care if you're in danger), but all of the innocent gapers skiing below you. Maybe you should stop being a selfish prick of a 12 year old and go do some backcountry skiing if you want to ski dangerous avy prone slopes (bring your go-pro though, so you can brag about it on the internet later)

I am guessing that this is all about Travis poaching a permanent closure at the resort, not going out of bounds. A permanent closure is closed, not because it poses a risk to the rider, but because it poses a risk to other users of the resort or infrastructure. Occasionally it will be because it is such a ridiculously dangerous area that the resort does not want to deal with the overwhelming media and potential lawsuits from deaths there. Sometimes it is because of political land use issues.This is rarer though.

So when you poach a permanent closure it is a problem because you are risking others well being. I would be amazed if Alyeska has a closed boundary that does not let you leave the resort.

People can keep swinging at me all he wants, my tone in this thread is def anti T-Rice, but that doesn't mean I want everyone to agree with me. I like to see discussion, and hearing more about how Alyeska decides to what to close and not to close has been really interesting. At least I didn't start a thread asking for cool music to ski too (+k yall).

I will say this, some people in this thread (Drail) need to quick sucking from T-Rices tit. Telling me to grow up... The rooting reflex is supposed to stop when the frontal lobe develops.

The only permanent closures at the resort are the ridge that overlooks the entire area (which is a non-issue because you would have to hike pretty far up to ride it. You can't just casually duck into a summit that is barely hikeable in the first place), a small canyon at the bottom of the resort that is to flat to slide, and the lower north face which is either so full of trees that it doesn't ever slide, or it empties into a lake, thereby absorbing any potential avalanche that could occur.

The upper north-side of the mountain is where the real danger is. Rarely is anybody stupid enough to duck out into those areas because they're a blind rollover into a rocky death. Obviously certain runs are closed for valid reasons because they are not maintained to be ridable (too thick with trees, creeks, etc). But if someone ducks into one of those zones that is rideable and gets caught, they will treat it as a black and white issue and freak out as if you just ducked a double close-out at the summit. Given that the resort has a history of actively marketing these lesser-incidents and embellishing the story to make it seem like the perpetrator endangered the lives of innocent men, women, and children, it seems to me that it's more likely that they overreacted in this particular instance.

Of course, it's all speculation. If Travis indeed ducked one of the actual gnarly closeouts, then good on them for pulling his ticket.

I mean there's a difference between "local" skiing and "extreme tourist" skiing.

"local" skiing is the gnarly stuff that only a local would be able to ski and navigate

"extreme tourist" skiing is going places locals know about, but not the average vacationer, that are still fun, but dont require prior knowledge to make it through.

Travis was probably in a zone in between the two mediums.

I find it hard to believe that there would be a permanent closure because trees are too thick. But, I guess it could happen. The thing is, it is often safer for hills to have terrain open than closed. At least it is getting patrolled if it is open, either way it is in their controlled recreation area so they are responsible. I would guess that is the area between the newly gladed area on the map.

Every single mountain I have seen closes terrain for a valid reason. This is all terrain that is in bounds, but labeled permanent closure. Out of bounds is generally useless to close as it is outside of the resorts Controlled recreational area and therefore out of their responsibility.

Does anyone have any actual information on this? I couldn't find anything on that facebook site.

ps. TRice does a great job portraying himself as someone who does not respect the mountains and snow safety.

Really though? I'm approaching your response without the hostility I had in my previous posts in this thread.

From my experience from skiing around western North America, most "permanent closures" I have looked at are there more so because the terrain is just straight up gnarly or a full on cliff face - and not so much because of start zones above "in bounds" terrain. There are many hills I have skied at where the "permanent closures" have many sick lines, that - if you have the skills to step up - don't actually have big run out zones that empty onto major "in bounds" zones.

For the record: I have based myself at a ski hill the past few years at a ski hill where there are NO permanent closures. We have free reign, and when shit is filled in, I ski quite a few lines that, at other mountains, would be off limits. Often, I'll go to another ski hill, look at some terrain that is in a permanent closure and just wonder, why? The lines are skiable, patrol is fully capable of controlling it, and yet - you're just told no.

I'd like to hear some Europeans chime in on this and see what their thoughts are about North America and their "permanent closure" policies.

well, from what i've heard, skiing out of bounds in US resorts is pretty sketchy, and ducking ropes will get your pass pulled and shit...

in europe we're generally more free to do whatever the fuck we want, roped off sections will most likely indicate gnarly terrain, most resorts i've been to have done everything to secure slide zones that would threaten inbounds terrain (blast pipes, explosive cables, avalanche barriers, etc....)

and about those permanent closures, i think they'd be the same as roped off areas in europe, except 90% of the time when we duck a rope we get no shit and in the US you'd almost get the chair ....

i dunno but last month in france i had a really cool sidecountry part that was basically a huge cliff (100m or something) with a dozen couloirs/gullies running through it, with an outrun straight onto some groomers/inbound terrain...
the thing was roped off with a warning sign but basically ducking the rope was done at your own risk and the resort didn't really care about it, so in the US this would be considered a permanent closure ?

I've also come with a biased opinion, as my resorts permanently closed areas are closed because the avalanche danger is very high (both the probability of a slide happening, and a very real risk of the runout sliding into other runs with unsuspecting riders/other terrain where it would be dangerous and/or destructive to have a slide). I've never been to Alyeska, and noone from their patrol has chimed in to say the exact "line" he was trying to poach, so it's hard to say who's in the right/wrong in this situation. The name is a trailer park boys reference - if you don't watch the show I guess it doesn't make sense.

i saw the posting on their facebook page too, the next day i went skiing in the closed off area that he went in and there was absolutely no avalanche danger, but they also let tim durchie ski where ever he wanted a few weeks back when he was here. im pretty sure alyeska was just trying to be cool by telling off Travis.

well my friend, i have a few friend that are ski patrol and they told me roughly where he went. i dont know if u have ever skied there but if u have u will know what im talking about. he traversed from new years or Christmas chute all the way across chump change and went in the trees to ride the pillows (and when i went the next day it was the most amazing run i have ever been on). and a few weeks ago when tim was here they opened up a few really sick looking closed off areas for him and his crew.

Well my home mountain is Alyeska so yes I do know what you are talking about. If he was ducking ropes into areas obviously closed off then I'm they pulled his pass. Moneys (the area directly above chump change) has at least one big slide each season and with all the snow we've been getting I'm surprised they even opened Chump Change considering we're still due. Also, if what you're saying about durtschi is true I'm sure they went through the proper channels of getting permission instead of ducking a rope and just because they are pro.

On another note, was it your first time on Chump Change? Definitely my favorite run on the mountain and it was pretty damn good today. February was epic and now we just need a solid Headwall and Moneys opening and it will officially be a perfect season.

now that im really thinking about i think the difference between what tim did and what travis did is travis didnt have permeation he just went ahead and did it, while tim did get permeation.

and it was the first time i had been that far over and also my favorite run, headwall would be sick, even center ridge would be awesome if they opened.
