Alyeska Stands up to T-Rice

From the looks of it (on Alyeska Park and Pipe FB page), Alyeska stopped T-Rice from riding in a closed area. After all the recent avalanche deaths in the PNW, and T-Rices asshole shenanigans with the pilot in the art of flight, I'm glad to see someone stand up for taking mother nature seriously.

I'm not the worlds biggest T-Rice fan, so I think this is funny. In my opinion, riding should be about having fun and having respect for the mountain and people in general, neither of which Travis seems to do well.

They most likely close areas that they've performed satisfactory avy work on so that pros (but not public) can ride. Which is much different than opening an area for riding with an unacceptable level of avy danger

everyone complains about the pilot in the art of flight and how Rice got him fired. The pilot was a grown man, he could have said no. His own stupidity got him fired

The shot in art of flight when Rice drops in from the copter off the board basket on the side. Apparently the pilot was fired or put on suspension for his negligence and lack of thinking. But somehow this translated into T-Rice being a big meany head and forcing the pilot to break protocol.

haha, t-rice is the shit dawgs, not saying i 'know' everything about him but i've had a chance to talk with him for quite some time and he's just one of the most dedicated/stoked riders i've ever met, he also made a very intelligent impression on me, don't know anything about the heli pilot story tough ....

"One of the crazier moments probably happened around the filming of the jumping off the helicopter shot. The pilot who took us out actually lost his job because of it, the FAA almost didn't let us include the scene in the final edit, they said it was all too dangerous.

"But you know, it all worked out in the end. The guy actually ended up signing on to be our pilot for rest of the film, the next year and a half, and he's one of the best guys I've ever met."

And T-Rice seems to have more ego than respect for the mountain, or the crew that works there. Everything worked out for that pilot (i guess one short term gig is better than your job), but if they let him ride in a known avy zone, they could all lose their jobs because he wanted the shot.
Alyeska built a massive jump for him to hit, and there isn't a shortage of non-resort owned mountains a heli ride away. I'm sure he can revolutionize snowboarding somewhere else.

I don't know anything about this that I didn't see on that facebook page but this still seems super fishy. It should be expected patrollers do their job and keep people out of closed areas but to publicize who is stopped should be completely irrelevant and is low. Yeah, I get that point with naming super big name pro to show that no one receives special treatment but if the patroller could only stop one person and he knew one of them was super big name pro he wouldn't be the one who was stopped.

i think it's pretty much a similar case as when you'd drive around in your car on the highway with one of your buddies sitting on your hood ... even if nothing goes wrong, you'll still most likely lose your license (or get fined)

Avy danger hear has been real bad lately. From my interactions with volunteer patrol here they are big tools, however thats rad that they didnt let travis ride the goods. Anybody who invents a new contest, just so he can win it loses respect in my book.

this thread is full of stupidity.

why are so many people choked about him winning his own contest? Other than Jon Olsson, I think every pro who has put on a competition has won it.

Jonny Moseley back in the day won his own contest
Candide Thovex has won his own event before
Terje Haakonsen won his event

I'm sure there's more that I'm just forgetting. I just don't see how anyone could hate on Travis Rice... he seams like he's a nice guy, he pushes the sport, is part of the community, and seams genuinely stoked to be allowed to do what he does.

And don't tell me "oh well, his videos are too flashy with helicopters filming helicopters, blah, blah, blah - go watch Deeper and tell me he isn't capable and willing to "earning his turns".

All of that is setting him up for Legend status and a true ambassador of the sport. Anyone who hates on the guy is just jealous of his skill and needs to grow up.

The ski patrollers on my home mountain are total bros and some of the coolest people on the mountain. If Rice got his pass pulled I guarantee he deserved it.

Saw him at alyeska yesterday, i didnt care to talk to him but a buddy of mine who boards tried to strike up a conversation but got blown off. This is all that i have to base my opinion from.

Did I mention anything about this Alyeska incident? no. Want my personal opinion on the matter? Based on the information at hand, I can't even really tell if he actually ducked a rope, or if he asked and got told no. Even if he did duck the rope and ride the line - who gives a fuck? He broke the rules, he dealt with the consequences like a normal person... where's the issue there? What is this, Hollywood?

You bitching about it looks bad on you. What? You mad because you didn't have the balls to ski it yourself? (Don't bother answering that question, 'cause I don't give a fuck).

No wonder Alyeska is failing to attract the tourism it so franticly threw its money towards.
Once again they make themselves look bad, by imposing their overly-cautious regulations on a rider who's abilities are clearly beyond the scope of any of the patrol.

Alyeska patrol will pull your pass and call the troopers if they catch you skiing out of bounds on the bunny hill, and then preach about "avalanche safety." You also get your pass pulled for inverts. I'm not exaggerating.

While I understand that those ropes are put up for a reason, this isn't the black and white issue that Alyeska patrol makes it out to be. If T-Rice was dropping in, chances are he knew what he was doing, especially since the mountain as a whole is relatively mellow, both in bounds and out. Endangering other riders? What about the owner heli skiing the (out of bounds) summit while everyone rides below?

i don't get comments like these... the ski patrol has a pretty good understanding of avy danger and it doesn't matter how skilled someone is. avys have proven time and time again to murk anyone regardless of how good they are or who they are. you're fucking retarded if you think that the ski patrol was in the wrong here. overly cautious, maybe but you have no clue about where exactly this was and even if you did, you don't know what the avy danger was in that area. pulling your ticket because of doing flips has nothing to do with this anyways, you jackass.

ns is full of ignorant kids so it's not all that surprising.

My comment isn't really regarding what may or may not have happened as it is more so aimed at your stupidity.

First and foremost, let's look at the obvious: Alyeska ski patrol vs Travis Rice. How often are Alyeska ski patrol at Alyeska? Wouldn't stretch it to say many of them would be up there 100+ days per year, and it also wouldn't surprise me if many of them have years, if not decades, up there. They probably know the terrain and what it is capable of more than anybody. Then take Travis Rice, amazing rider, knows snow fairly well, but does he know that area as well as the ski patrol? Does the terrain give a fuck that it is Travis Rice gracing his presence on its slopes?

At least what I've seen from recent, and not so recent videos, Travis Rice may have pretty decent respect for the snow, but he is certainly willing to take massive gambles (that whole Nelson segment in Art of Flight was fucking irritating - IF IT IS THAT UNSTABLE, DON'T RIDE IT YOU FUCKING IDIOT). Like I said, terrain doesn't give two fucks who you are or what you know.

There are no more than five runs that pose a legitimate avalanche danger; convex faces, no trees, highly windblown etc. If Travis was ducking those ropes, fine. I'll side with the patrol for obvious reasons.

But there's also some neat pillow stashes hidden away in the flatter regions of the mountain very similar to the type of pillow mashing he is known for. In fact, a majority of these out of bounds stashes are down there, and Alyeska is notorious of treating the two areas as if they were identical scenarios.

I'm not saying Travis is immune to avalanches, or that he inherently possesses some authority over others due to his prestige. I'm saying that considering how notoriously draconian Alyeska patrol are about going out of bounds (even if its a pillow line next to the bunny hill down by the parking lot), it seems more likely than not that Alyeska was overreacting.

I'm with this guy. It's fine if they catch him somewhere that is prone to avys, but if its just a little stash or line with no major fresh snow, let him get in there. He definatly is more skilled and more knowledgable than any ski patrol when it comes down to a standard trail that anybody knows about. As long as hes not going into some death trap locals only run that is super confusing and steep, just let him be.
