To use or not to use base cleaner?

When waxing your skis do you use base cleaner beforehand?

Don't, it will pretty much take all the wax out of your skis along with the dirt and leave your bases dry. If your concerned about dirty bases just scrap while the wax is still hot and that will take all the dirt off. Then you can really wax them without worrying about burning dirt or whatever into the base.
