by cutting, i assume you have a deck and just want to cut out a new shape ?

first start off by drawing a centerline all the way over your deck, then take a pencil and draw the shape on one side of the deck, then take a ruler and measure every cm/ inch from your shape to the center line and copy it towards the other side, once this is done on a good amount of spots, connect the measured dots with a fluid line and you should get a pretty decent symmetry...
you can also use a large paper sheet to draw out your profile and simply flip it around onto the other half to get perfect symmetry ....

anyways, once you have your profile, take a jigsaw (powertool) and simply cut along the lines, when this is done take a file and some sandpaper on it to round off the edges and make the thing feel smooth !

now to make it really good, spraypaint your board or put a clear varnish over it to protect the wood from the elements.

mount up your trucks and you're ready to go !

some small notes, make sure you have room for your wheels, you have 3 options, you make cut-outs for the wheels, you grind out wheel wells (check silverfish for tutorial/tips) or do nothing at all ...

in the last 2 cases you'll have to use risers to adjust how high your deck stands on the trucks....

Buy any Rayne/Landy/anything not Loaded or Original with any reverse kingpin trucks with some kind of wheels that aren't O-Tangs.

I'm trying to get into a bit of cruising, maybe some really mellow DH this year, and I've never had a longboard before. I made a thread in Gear Talk but it's not getting too many responses.

Basically at this point I'm trying to decide between a Sector 9 Snapper (34" swallow/kicktail) and an Arbor Mission (37" swallow/kicktail).

I'm 5'8", 140 lbs, and need something I can use to cruise around town & campus, but that can handle some little descents and that I can maybe use to learn some slides. Being able to ollie would also be a plus.

Suggestions?

I'm converting from a Earthwing Supermodel 40" 9 ply. I really liked it but it was stolen :( I rode on it for about 4 months before last winter and got pretty good at Freeriding and low-speed slides. A little DH but not a lot. I have $270 to spend on a new one and am planning on getting a Landyachtz Wolf Shark, Caliber 50s and Metro Motions. Good idea? I'm going to a topmount because my friend (Who's sponsored by Daddies Board Shop) said they make standups more controlled and you can hold them out longer. They're also more stable. He went from an original freeride 41 to a grease hammer and progressed a lot within a week. So is that setup good? thanks

I wish I was good at longboarding. I fell last saturday and broke my wrist. I should just stick with rock climbing. Anyone wanna buy a apex 37 with some nice after market wheels (I can find the name later if needed) and medium springs for $50? The nose is damaged so keep that in mind.

get a grease hammer, voodoo doll, D2, or grease shark.

Comet makes some of the best DH/FR decks on the market.

I'm riding a D2 right now because I dig the symmetrical shape for freeride, but the board rips downhill like a motherfucker as well.

Any advice I've only had my board for like a month and It's already holding me back. Since it cant slide(or so I thought), I built some slide gloves and tried to take a sharp turn going very fast with both my gloves on the ground. Next thing I know the POS board actually slid the one time I didn't want it to. I wrecked myself and my elbows and knees are all cut up. I thing I'm going to order some 86a stimulus wheels. Is this a good Idea? Also I'm lucky I was wearing a helmet or I could be in the ER right now. No one seems to wear elbow pads, does everyone just let their elbows get cut up?

Get abec 11 flashbacks. Cheap. Or Sector 9 Butterballs. Cheap. And I wear knee/elbow pads when I do DH and fast freeride, but not cruising or low speed sliding and stuff

I've enjoyed sliding on zombie hawgs as well, although there's not a ton of thane on the wheels.

Stims arent awful, they are just overpriced for their performance. I agree about the 70s flashbacks or butterballs though. And any wheel will slide once it is broken in, and they type of board really doesn't make a difference when it comes to the actual act of sliding. Different shapes and concaves may be more comfortable and stable for your slide, but your board will still slide no matter what with enough force. All of sliding comes down to speed, comfort, and control. Also, I do not think it is a good idea to put both gloves down on the ground when going through a corner. That sort of slide can be sort of unpredictable in my experience when you are right no the edge of sliding and gripping. You will be more stable and safer to grab your baord with your outside hand and lean in on your inside hand. And regarding elbow pads, I wear them when I am not cruising. One last thing, good job on wearing a helmet. I hate seeing people boarding with out a helmet on. Mine has saved me a few headaches.

Ok, so there's a few things here... What kind of board do you have? Any board will slide, any wheels will slide, you just have to practice. As for sliding, only your inside hand needs to be on the ground and a huge misconception is that slides are just hard turns. To slide you need to be kicking the board out into the slide, not just turning until it breaks free. It helps to set a counter carve right before you try to slide, but you should by no means be turning and turning and expecting the board to break into a slide.

as for pads, if you know how to fall your elbows should never hit the ground. Knee pads are useful if you're into sliding out falls on your knees, but all you really need are gloves and shoes to slide on when you fall. Any faster when you might be sliding all over your body and you should be in leathers.

Between the Arbor Mission (37" kicktail) and the Sector 9 Snapper (34" bamboo kicktail) what would you choose for a cruiser that could also work for some really mellow descents? (I'm 5'8" and 140 lbs)

The longboarding world is as trendy as 12 year old girls. They otangs aren't the worst but they certainly aren't the best either. Combine that with a high price tag and the fact that every 14 year old has a set and you'll get a lot of hate among the "weekend warrior" longboarders who do three foot stand up checks and hands down slides at low speeds.

They get pegged as being choppy during slides, but I owned a set of 86a durians and once they got under 70mm and especially right around 60mm they slid pretty damn well. Plus they have a ton of thane and last forever so honestly I don't see what there is to complain about. Maybe it's just that they take so long to break in that people assume they will stay like that forever before getting to the sweet spot. They even start to lay down some pretty sweet thane lines even though they seemingly never wear.

It is like the longboarding equivalent of Jiberish. Everyone has them and they arent necessarily the best. I agree with skithesprings. They are fairly good wheels and are pretty durable, but just a little over priced and not quite the topnotch performance you want.

I have some crown downhill board from amazon and the wheels are VERY VERY sticky, trust me the only time i slid was the one time on accident. I think my next board will be a 41' Earthwing Supermodel with butterballs (maybe I heard the wear down really fast though) or some flashbacks.

I suggest browsing silverfish for a while before investing in anything or making any decisions, there's a wealth of knowledge over there. (the NS of longboarding)

And as for your setup, while it might not be optimal, you can still learn coleman slides, I don't care how sticky your wheels seem to be, they will slide. If you can't learn a hands down slide on the setup you have now, buying a new board will not have you throwing 60 foot standies.

When you're looking for a new board, keep in mind that you will in time want to move to a top mount. It will make the wheels seem even stickier in a carve, but more controlled in a slide. Dropthroughs are easier to learn on but hold less potential once you get a lot lot better. The easiest way is to just learn on a topmount so you don't have to go through the learning curve again once you learn on a dropthough. Of course you can mount say, a supermodel, as a top mount, but a top mount specific board would be best. Another thing to keep in mind is that 41" is pretty damn long. I'm 6'2" and ride a 36" Comet D2 and it suits me perfectly for freeriding and I just took it up to 50mph today, so DH isn't really a problem either.

oh, and butterballs are pretty slide specific, I don't suggest them unless you have another set of wheels for DH or you only want to be drifting all over the place. That being said, they are fun while they last. For something cheap that will last and slide well check out phat deanz, they're not very well known but great wheels.

i rode a s9 pintail for 3 years and the only good thing i have to say about it is that it survived. they're practically bombproof and work great for fucking around in the snow and rain or plowing into curbs at 70k and shit like that. gave it to my lil sis (complete with rusty bearings, bent trucks, worn down wheels, and duct tape holding the nose of the deck together) and now she rides it while i ride my cushy beautiful new Tan Tien. i won't miss my s9 but i did have a lot of fucking fun times on it and the scars to show for it.
