U of Utah Question: Heavy Mormon Influence?

So im currently in high school and im starting to look around at which colleges i'd consider applying to and i was looking at U of U. I looked into the school and everything and i know its a good school and its close to skiing but i have a question for people currently going there about the whole Mormon culture. So heres the thing, i dont think this would be an issue but my mother is currently totally against me going there because she thinks that i will be totally cut off from society because im not mormon. Crazy i know. I dont really know all the detail of mormons in SLC but understand that there is a heavy mormon influence and i dont think she realizes that there are definitely non mormon people that go to school there -- let alone skiers and even a lot of NSers. So if anyone currently going to University of Utah, or just living in SLC that can speek to the mormon situation that would be helpful

For the lazy: Looking into the University of Utah, but my mother doesn't want me to look at it because she is afraid of me living in SLC and not being mormon. If anyone could speak to this that would be great.

Great friend of mine goes there right now. And so did my sister, both say lots of mormons, but they do not play a big amount of what happens. My buddy is in a frat and he says it kicks ass, plus he takes morning classes so at 12:30 he goes straight to the hill everyday only takes 30 minutes. What year are you thinking of going? I'm a junior and might go when i graduate.

Mormons do not bother nor influence you in any way at U of U, nor really in general. Idk why people tend to hate mormons when they usually are just happy people who go about their days without interfering with you

its nothing to worry about. I spent a semester at the U and you only notice it if you look for it. there arent people knocking on your dorm door begging you to convert.

Although, i now have a sixth sense for recognizing if a person is mormon....

I think it's one of those things where, if you're looking for it, it's there. Yeah, it might come up every now and then, but if you don't have Mormon friends, it's not like it's going to be in your face every day.

Yeah it's not really as big of a deal as everyone makes it. I've lived in Salt Lake my whole life and there are a lot of Mormons but it's not like they hinder anyone from having fun. Mormons generally like to stay away from people who aren't of their particular religious preference and after spending some time around them you develop the ability to tell if somebody is Mormon just by briefly interacting with them.

when i went to the U, mormons weren't a problem at all. i almost get offended when people here at home say something negative about mormons. because in reality, mormons are the nicest people i have met. It's the close-minded kids that you should worry about.

You wont even notice them. You'll get drunk at parties, get a good education, ski a lot, make tons of friends, all while interacting with few mormons. The few you do meet wont give you any trouble and I guarantee your experience will be pretty normal. I would recommend coming to school here its really fun!

Mormon influence on a social level is not really a big deal in Utah. they tend to be nice enough people who more often than not stick together and associate with their own group. So unless your a very family oriented, conservative, and pussified individual you wont really be mixing with them too much because they'll want nothing to do with you anyway.

Although politically Mormon influence is extremely prevalent in Utah, but unless you plan on living here permanently i wouldn't even worry about that too much.

Absolutely no influence. They're around, but i've never been approached to convert or have had it shoved in my face. SLC is becoming less populated by mormons every year and most of the momos who live in the city/university area are still there because they're chill. All the crazy mormons live in the provo area and the area north of provo until about sandy (in the slc valley).

There are definitely some bad mormon politicians that have created some very funky laws like enforcing 4% beer at all grocery stores/gas stations, only selling higher % booze at liquor store.(WTF is the point right?) no kegs, liquor stores closed on sunday (alot of states are like that) trying to limit bars from having specials (doesnt work, tons of loop holes, every bar has cheap drink specials every day) etc etc.

Live in the dorms your first year, meet a ton of people, ski a shit ton and you will have a great time.

OP you have a quite awhile before u even have to worry about applying to schools so you have plenty of time to convince them let a lone even worry about this shit yet.

But seriously if the only reason why they don't want you to go U of U is because of Mormons fucking call them out for being so ignorant and prejudice. I mean unless they have had actual bad experiences from living in SLC you should tell them to fuck off for not letting you go to a school you want simply based solely on unsubstantiated rumors.

My family currently lives in Draper and they're not Mormon. You just have to be a tollerant person and accept that they have a different religion than you. There is a strong Mormon influence, but if you draw the line and let them know that you're not interested in converting they'll respect your boundaries. And honestly, there are so many amazing ski resorts near SLC, when you move there you'll hardly think about it.

this!

I just visited CU and loved it, but the cost...around 42k for out of states with room and board is what they told me. where utah out of state is what? 22k or something like that? that's a huge price difference. I'm trying to talk my parents into U of U now because they aren't too happy with the price of CU

If you have questions about mormons ask one? the weird mormons arent weird because they are mormon, they would be weird mofos anyways. Im mormon, i ski everyday, and most of my friends arent mormon in utah. mormons in utah shouldnt be a deterring factor. we wont drink up all your beer or smoke your weed for you, it should be a positive thing! more for you.

The U is cool. I've got a few good friends who are mormon, and I honestly didn't even know they were mormon until the topic of religion got brought up a few months after I'd met them. You'll find that a lot of mormons (especially the girls) party really, REALLY hard.

You won't be cut off from society. Your mom is just being a typical mom and trying to get you to stay closer to home/her. My mom did it to me too.

OP, Im mormon, say it proudly. Mormons are like every other religion, there are normal mormons and then the weirder kind. Im a normal kid, I've partied: drinking, smoking, attempt to entertain the ladies lol.
The point im trying to make is, that its just our religion, we aren't a cult. Generally normal people won't try and convert anyone unless that person shows interest in the church. As for making friends and being part of society, I have best friends who are catholics and other religions, I have best friends who are Mormon. It doesn't effect anything. Of course I don't party anymore, and Im actually about as good as it gets, other then cussing. I feel like my reasoning should help. hope it does.

The U sucks. The Mormons slap drinks out of your hands at the bars and at parties. All the professors are horrible. It takes forever to get to the ski resorts and they are all overcrowded, the snow quality is shitty it's all cement and it hardly snows at all when it does. Overall 2/10 Utah sucks don't bother.
