France conquer England? No, I think not. It was ALL Rome. You mentioned Vercingetorix. Caesar defeated him and then occupied Gaul. Then the Roman army moved on to Britannia, NOT the native Gaulish people. So no, France never conquered England. Nice try though.

Eh, I know a couple of hot British girls. More interestingly, I don't know any ugly ones. But anyways, that's kinda shallow. William of NORMANDY would have been French by modern borders, but it was a pretty different world back then, and yes, his lineage was scandinavian. Considering the fact that for a couple of centuries leading up to that point, wealthy landowners throughtout the 'french' region had more power than and were not accountable to the french royal family (whose demesne didn't spread very far at all outside Paris), it's hard to argue that he would have been called a 'Frenchman' at the time. He did speak french, though. It was the language of the court for most of the middle ages. So I guess it depends on how you look at it.

Anyways, PunkRider's anti-british bias is about as idiotic as he makes himself out to be. And by the way, your list was fairly pathetic. Rousseau, Aquinas and Descartes couldn't write. Their writing was terrible. They were philosophers. This means their ideas were what was valued, not their writing. Again, England wins that contest (Locke, Mill, Bentham, Burke, Hobbes and about 30 others I could name), but that isn't the point. The point is that you're totally wrong about literature. Shakespeare, Chaucer, Spenser and Milton alone are better writers than any of those you've mentioned, but I can just keep going: Donne, Shelley, Keats, Eliot, Blake, Austen, Wordsworth, Ralegh, Wilde, Coleridge, Bacon... I could go on. Britain is the uncontested foremost nationality in writing, which is impressive, because the English language is not particularly amenable to good writing. I do agree that you've got the Americans beat, but then, they've only had 200+ years to work with.

Look at William the Conquers life. Normandy was not part of France at the time. We might as well call the Scottish and Welsh people English for that matter. At one point William even fought against King Henry I OF FRANCE. That was before he even invaded England, and defeated Harold II at the Battle of Hastings.

^^ don't blame me for that man! to me writers and philosophers are under the same word 'writers'! i know it's different, but english is really not my native language! i do my best!
for William, well ... he was the descendants of vikings, who were awarded land against peace by our french king. i know france is not what we know today but actually, they lived on french land, spoke french (actually forgot their own language in less tha 2 generations), and all vikings descendants are now french (place like Trouville, or names like Tourville (famous french general)) come from Thor and so now, are 100% french.
About literature ... well, you can't discuss tastes, but my tastes make me think french writers are way better. miserabilism (does this word make sense in english?)is so present in english writing. well nevermind, you will not change my mind, and i will not change yours.

My paragraph about english sucking was not what i think! be sure that was provocation (i'm not sure but i think there was a ;D after it! if there's one, verify before answering). It's just absolutely sure that i don't feel close to english way of life and culture. remember england is supposed to be our historical forever enemy!!! ;D

Quebec rules. As for writing... matter of opinion. You may have skipped a few good French, J.D:

Louis Aragon, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus,Jean Cocteau, Marie de France, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel de Montaigne, Blaise Pascal, Jacques Prévert, Marcel Proust, Arthur Rimbaud, Jean Rostand, Jean-Jacques Rousseau
George Sand, Jean-Paul Sartre, Voltaire. How about Victor Hugo and Molière? ... Baudelaire?

I'm not dissing you, it's just that people would gulp anything you say, but english doesen't win 'no contest' in a litterature (be it playwriting, or poetry, or books).

So...the French gave the Vikings land so they wouldn't kick the crap out of them...they chilled their for a little while...William was knighted by the French king...William fought off attempted invasions by that same French king from 1054-1057...The French were finally DEFEATED at the Battle of Mortemer in 1057.

It sounds to me like the true French were a different entity entirely. The Normans were NOT French. They were Scandinavians occupying what is now modern day France. Historically Vikings were known for adapting to other cultures for reasons of trade. So what if the Normans spoke the common tongue of France, that means little. Even if you make the argument that they were French, they were only by a fraction.

we are only 60 million people learning it at school! well, i could make the longest post ever teaching you french history full size + french law and international one about nationality (even if it doesn't apply to william, it allows me to show i have made and still make long studies!! ;D), but i have not enough time!

you do not answer to the questions of my previous post! with this logic, no one is nothing!

I do know what is being taught in schools. They are always refereed to as Normans, not French. 'William the Conquer and his Norman army', not 'William the Conquer and his French army'. 'The Normans defeated the Anglo-Saxons' not the 'French defeated the Anglo-Saxons'. Did you know that before Scandinavians were called Vikings they were refereed to as Normans (Norsemen or Northmen)?

And to an extent 'no one is nothing'. Nationality is simply a label to put on people. We are all human beings. Calling somebody an American, French, Jew, black, etc., is just a way of identifying people. William and his followers have historically, always been identified as Normans not French. You could call them French, but they are not identified as that.

^Er... #2 was kinda the entire point of what I was saying. Given that there wasn't a real 'French nation', it seems a little silly to cal William French. As for Corsica, this is true, although it's not exactly the same as having a foreigner lead your armies. Thirdly, Descartes is better known for philosophy than math, though he did both, just as Pascal is better known for mathematics than philosophy. But he certainly wasn't a LITERARY author, and it seemed odd to me that he was listed alongside Dumas and his ilk, which is why I pointed it out. Lastly: your sig made that all really confusing. Are you calling me an asshole, or did I do that and you're quoting me? Confusing. Leave a space or something.

And to quebec guy: I concede Hugo, Moliere, Voltaire, Dumas and Montaigne, of those mentioned, as measuring up to those I listed, but certainly not exceeding them. Also, Emile Zola. But for the third time, quit saying Rousseau. He is conspicuous despite his mediocrity when it comes to political and philosophical thought, and he certainly doesn't deserve to be called a 'Writer' any more than does Einstein.

as we say in french, you are just a bunch of 'enculeur de mouches'! (word by word translation: 'flies assfuckers'). you just play on words as you say at the same times things historically false. be honest, william is part of our history, he lived on our land, drank our water, spoke our language, and the 'tapisserie de Bayeux' is in france. same stuff for romans and italians.


but we're loosing the aim of this thread: the main part is about the fact that we are the best people in the world! the greatest country! you can say the contrary but you ALL come to visit our cities, museums and castles.

simple fact... if youre nice to people, you have a good chance that they will be nice back to you. alot of english speaking people go to france with this high and mighty attitude and expect everyone to speak english to them i order to avoid speaking french. how would you feel if some fat, smelly mexican came up to you while you were trying to work and expected you to speak spanish and was pissed when you told him that you couldnt? what im trying to say is that the french are arrogant and so are americans.i know alot of wonderful french people and alot of dirty rotten americans that should go to hell. it balances out. on average the french are very very nice and accommodating.

well, the last time i went to france april 04, most of them were pretty nice except a few, there was this psycho drunk hobo on the steps of a church like, yelling at us and was pretending to shoot us 'I HATE ALL AMERICANS! I SHOOT YOU ALL!' and another french hobo punched my french teacher out in the metro...it was fucked up

i personally think there is to many arrogant americans on this website. i have heard more people say that the us is the best but in all reality the us is only 11th or 12th best in the world. dont get me wrong 11 is good but that is far from being the best. as for everyone thinking that the us liberated france during WW2, its only partially true, the fact is that france was liberated by a bunch of countries not just the US so dont think that you just walked into europe and saved them.

Americans are the most obnoxious rude and intolerant tourists in the world, a close second being camera-happy asians. it is a fact that without the aid of the French, the United States would not have gained independance from Britain when they did, if ever.....a fact convieniently forgotten by americans, or maybe just a fact that is never learned. besides, if the worth and importance of a nation is based soley on their military prowress then maybe this is a world i do not wish to be living in. who cares if they lost or surrendered, being a bully and policing the world does not make a country great by any means. Whoever said that we are all people and that it doesnt really matter where you are born is completely correct. there are rude people everywhere, there are arrogant people everywhere, of course there are these sorts of people in france, but they also dwell in nations such as...oh i dont know..the US. so even asking the question what do you think of the french? seems odd to me, considering that no one likes being included in a generalization that they do not support or agree with.
