Driver's Test

Im finally about to take my drivers test to get my license. Turned 16 last November..
Right now I'm waiting in my car while the first round of testers are driving. I wouldn't say I'm nervous, just anxious. I'm one of the last people in my grade to get their license.

Anyway, I'll post back in this thread when the test is over. Hopefully it'll be good!

I cannot wait till next summer when I have to get my license renewed and have to take the driving test. Im gonna try to be as distracted as I can be, while still driving like a boss. I wanna see some white knuckles on the old lady in the passenger seat.

First time I failed for stopping in an intersection, there was a lady crossing that I didn't see cause of the sun. Second time i got a point off for reving too high(bullshit it's my car I can rev it however I want) and for being a little crooked when I parked in the mall after the test.

Well my in my opinion, 16 is a bit too young too. I think 18 is fine. In germany you can get moped permit way earlier. You can also get a learners permit with 17 (guess the system is the same as in the US).
But I think you are fully able to drive, if you can manage a ride thats longer then 4h without any problems. My first long ride wasnt longer then 2h, but after that time basically every bon in my body was hurting and I couldnt pay any more attention to the road ;) But I guess you get used to that, now I can drive 8h without giving a shit ^^

If you need 5 tries to park your car properly you have ZERO control over your car.

The point of the parallel park in the test is to allow you to demonstrate your awareness of your car's handling as well as your ability to monitor your surroundings. I have maybe had to parallel park 5 times in the past year. I can crank it out every single time without hesitation and without thinking because I have full control of the car and know how to maneuver it.

They give you a car? Lucky. I wish I could drive a sedan like I used in drivers Ed. Much better control and visibility = easier to take the test

It's either a car from the driving school or from the "DMV" as it has to have the extra pedals and mirrors I mentioned earlier. Manual shift mandatory.

The only complaints I've heard about this have been with nervous kids who have been used to a stiff clutch and have to take the test with a really loose one.

Makes sense. I find it odd as to how you need to use a standard. Do most people drive sticks in Finland/Europe?

It's written in law, that one who has a driver's license must have control of a manual shift, mostly because of emergencies where one might need to drive someone but didn't know how to drive a shift. I think it should be mandatory everywhere unless manuals become obsolete some day.

I don't have any statistics about that, but most new SUV type cars are sold as automatics.

you had a year to practice using YOUR car.

i have only driven like 6 different vehicles, but it takes 5 minuets to get adjusted to how the pedal and brake respond, and your visibility.

I get your point, but the bigger the vehicle, the harder it is to maneuver, that's just how it works. I'm not saying that I would've passed had I been driving a sedan, but I would've liked it better nonetheless. Sorry if I sound like I'm complaining. I know I failed and I should have because I wasn't ready. If I was ready I would've passed.

And actually, I drove my mom's van 75% of the time. And me and my brother's car is a sedan, but it's a standard and I'm not that good at it yet.

Hmm it's interesting how different the standards for driving are around the world... I was supposed to get my G2 (license that basically gives me full driving privileges, but I can only drive with 1 person under the age of 18 not in my immediate family between 12AM-5AM), but broke my collarbone like 5 days beforehand. Was so fucking bummed, and probably won't even be able to take the test until next week at the earliest.


But man, parallel parking is easy... Vans are easy to drive too, and I almost prefer them because you have such a wide field of vision when backing up.

I have to mail the DMV my application then they mail me my date. Don't ask why I can't just do it all at the DMV, because I don't know and I think its stupid.

Man suprised at how many people think that the driving age should be higher, i could get my N, where I could drive by myself at 17, and i thought it was to late, I would have loved to get it earlier. But I'm from a fairly rural town, so having a licence and vehicle is so important, and its easier to learn how to drive

i love this law. it feels like the only people in america who drrive stick are people who race / drift and a few people who are old school. Everyone at stops lights always does the sreep foeward (annoying when your in a stick) and generally makes it harder for us stickies, i feel like if more people knew how, more would, and the driving process as a whole would be so ,uch more efficent. Whats traffic like in finland? less congested when stop and go? or do most people drive automatics, just have the knowlege of how to drive manual?

i hated driving a stick in traffic.

so much clutching.

i think that a stick is much safer, since when you step off of the gas it decelerates, compared to an automatic that will coast. this is especially helpful in the event of a slide.

I can only really speak for Helsinki, and considering our population is quite small compared to your bigger areas and we have an excellent and fluid public transport system - it's far too congested during peak rush hours. The light systems and larger intersections have been consistently developed to flow better, but as the rising amount of new cars is hardly ever taken into account, any new developments seem to backfire.

The stop and go congestion probably depends on where you are at any given time, but I don't see a lot of people struggling with good timing in lights. I hope the Green Party gets more places in the next city council, they have great ideas how to open up the trouble spots.

Green party fucked everything up in Germany (at least where I live). They made the lights chage, so you wouldnt be able to go through 4-5 following lights without going way faster than the speedlimit. Dont ask me for the reasons though... Also we had a bunch of retards (motivated by some stupid environmentalists) camping in our "central park" because of a project going on at the central station (Stuttgart 21), so I really got enough of all that green bullshit going on, they are politicians after all anyway :D

That's absolutely right. I can't believe some people who have been driving for years could get into a car in a life or death situation and sit there and stall out. Not mandatory here but my parents insisted for obvious reasons on knowing how to drive a stick.

nah my first choice is m/t...especially in a sports car....i just don't think the ability to drive one is special

my previous cars have all ben m/t....but now i'm in a 1 ton with an a/t
