with all this talk about having to drive slow in the snow, i feel like i gotta voice my opinion. a girl i know flipped her car a few years back, and my sister a year ago. neither were driving fast, just lost control because they didnt know how to control the car. the first girl actually let go of the steering wheel thinking thats what you are supposed to do!? my sister said she just didnt know how to stop the slide. and pretty much every other person i know who's had an accident in the snow is the type of person who goes 20 under at any sign of a dusting. otherwise its my friends drifting around breaking wheels on curbs.
first of all i think everyone needs to go slide around in the snow a little bit so they at least have an idea of how their car reacts and how to control a slide, ive taken many people drifting around this awesome parking lot near me and its absolutely insane how horrible most people are when i try to teach them.
when i drive in snow i like to atleast get the car sliding around a little bit every now and then to see where the limits are in those conditions. i definitely drive faster than almost anyone around me in snow, but i guarantee that i am in way more control than they are. and its payed off in more than a couple bad situations, where other "careful" drivers ended up off the road, spinning or hitting guardrails.
driving slow in the snow isnt "under control" because as soon as you loose control or have to avoid something, you will have no idea how or what to do.
another big thing is if you are driving slow, get out of others way! there have been so many times where ive seen some ass in the left lane in snowy conditions going 35mph, causing everyone going the speed limit to slam their brakes and cause a big traffic jam. thats how pile ups happen.
tires also play a HUGE part, the difference between a top of the line snow tire and even a low end snow tire can be huge.
