Getting big mountain sponsored

I would love to get sponsored for big mountain/powder skiing just wondering if any one has any tips to start my journey. i great skiier and have been doing it my whole life! i love freestlye park skiing but never got to good at at, on the other hand when it comes to back country im flawless. i just dont know where to go to even start getting sponsored. thanks NS. +K to all that helps

do you even know what backcountry is?

people generlize this so much.

have you ever skinned?
do you know how to operate a beacon?
do you know how to do an ect test?

please dont go into the backcountry if you dont.

A matter of fact i do know what back country is I have skied the rockies every season since i started skiing back when i was a child! I moved out to Illinois for my job and that's whats killing me I've only made it out 3 times this year to Colorado due to this bull shit job. I'm glad every ones a bitch in here and instantly jumps down a persons throat not knowing a single thing about them. I have dedicated every single season of my life to getting better and better and hitting multiple mountains to get the best variety of terrain possible. thank you to those who had a helping reply to this thread. to every one else try not being suck bitches!!

the best experience you can get is from other experienced people and your own.

i do plan on getting my avy 1 and 2 this upcoming winter.

Being a Big Mountain pro is just about seriously good skiing ... If you want a chance think about how you can approach the backcountry in a different way, what is you are doing that nobody else is doing?

I agree but Avy 1 is still really helpful, you can never be too safe out there. To the OP, post an edit, and maybe try some local competitions.

resorts=/= backcountry.

even the most extreme resorts (squaw, jackson) dont have SHIT on the things you can access in the backcountry.

although you might be one helluva shreder in bounds, this means nothing/jack shit. especially if your looking to get sponsored.

ya I know. I have ventured out of bounds to some actual back country terrain a hand full of times, and have been heli skiing every other year since 98. im just looking to get my foot in the door. Thanks +K

ok seriously, it doesnt matter how many times you take trips out here, you need to live in the mountains. spend everyday ripping hard and getting noticed.

meet local reps, and team managers.
compete in every comp possible to get your name out there.

yea of all the how to get sponsored claims for some reason this one seems the most legit. i would give you advice but i dont have a clue about anything that involves backcountry or even powder skiing whatsoever. sooo good luck i guess

I'd describe Jamie Pierre as a sponsored adrenaline junkie. Sponsored big mountains skiers would be FWT guys like Henrik Winstedt or Cody Townsend.

that's the exact opposite of what you want to do if you actually want to get sponsored for "big mountain" skiing.

1. Move to the mountains
2. ski all winter
3. get really good at skiing
4. enter big mountain competitions
5.????????

yeah man just search enter some big mountain freeride comps and charge hard, if youre really any good someone will notice. it helps to stay in shape too

Why do you want to get sponsored? You do realize it isn't a one-way street. Since you seldom ski, and since you are probably ok but not highly visible, what worth do you have for companies? Enthusiasm is almost always insufficient if you're an athlete.

If you really wanted to prove your ability, enter comps... everywhere. That, and/or just get somebody to film you day after day on some seriously spicy shit. In the end, it is about exposure.

You need to at least make some gopro/contour edits... Look at andrew whiteford. That's like all he does and he's pretty well known and has some big time sponsors. I think without making an edit or winning a big mountain comp you have virtually no chance. It's not like someone's just going to see you skiing and walk up to you and offer you a sponsorship.

also, be more focused and think outside of the box than everyone else. Be more creative, more inspirational, and work harder than everyone. Start training (physically). Lift weights, start eating right, and do aerobics and calisthenics. Twice a day, every day.

Join JFT or FWt if you're older. I did JFT for a few seasons and it's fun but you really have to be able to dedicate your entire winter to skiing (like ski everyday all season long) if you want to be competitive enough to earn sponsorship. Big Mountain sponsorship is really hard to get without doing comps so I'd start there but realistcally (especially at any age above 20 were you're competing against real pros), you won't get sponsored. Enjoy just skiing and don't take it that seriously.

There are 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 threads on this but skiing ability =/= big time sponsorship. You gotta have a personality as well, you gotta be able to meet people in the industry.

Being sponsored by someone big is difficult and requires much more than skill on skills.

I'll speak from experience here, and shed some light into some of it.

If you want to be a big mountain rider and be sponsored for it, you'll need to be up there for most of the season. It's not just the skiing, the the people skills too, you have to sell your company. You can't just get a deal, then become a weekend warrior.

In the past, I used to ski for Kicking Horse Resort, and I was up there every day loving it. My contract required me to help out at hill events (not just their big mountain event), we also had photo shoots (best part imo). It was awesome. Two years of hill skiing for free, just up there everyday making a good image for the hill, along with travelling to the local big mountain comps to show off "The Horses Finest".

I ended up moving away from Golden, which meant becoming a weekend warrior, and out for Christmas break. In my team managers eyes, it wasn't worth it for a sponsorship.

So it's something to commit to. Companies out there are starting to get tired of giving people gear and getting nothing in return from it. And a weekly edit to the company won't help much.


So my tip for wanting to be sponsored is get exposure. Meet reps, make friends, do competitions, photo shoots for advertisements/magazines.
Companies want to see their product out there in the world, not just on some kid who's flawless.
