so i know there are plenty of concussion threads, but this is kinda weird to me...
So its my first concussion...
I over shot a jump and was backseat so i back slapped and whipped my head into the snow. Basically, i have no recollection of anything for the next half hour. Apparently we took another run, i got lost, my friend called me and i talked to him, then we made our way down to patrol. I have zero recollection of this and thought we just went straight in after i hit my head. I didnt get a headache, and i felt a little bit car sick afterword, but other than that i feel fine. (and a sore neck from the whip) so im wondering, am i fine? i skied easy the next two days, didnt fall (just on groomers) and am now taking 2 days off. This is my first concussion, even tho it is a self diagnosis, due to the amnesia.. is this weird? or normal. Thanks!

damn thats sketchy. One common symptom of a concussion is nasuea, so that may very well explain the car sickness. the memory loss also points to a concussion. the fact that you didnt have a headache is strange. its a tough call, but i would say you may have suffered a mild concussion. try not ski for at least a week. another hand jolt of the head could shake the brain internally against the skull, even if you dont directly hit your head on anything. if you even mildly hurt your brain in this way while it is still recovering from your first injury, you could end up with a much greater problem.

why the fuck is everyone acting like a concussion ISN'T a big deal. i had a concussion a while back. i got hit in the head with a football(may sound ridicolous but it was fuckin hard.) only the next day i started to feel sick and threw up 3 times. the school doctor suggested i went to the hospital which i did. they told me to stay home for like a week. i couldn't even watch tv or anything. for the next week or so i got a headache just from going to the mall(too much colours and noises..).
I got a little carried away there with my text but what im tryin to say is that concussions are a big deal(especially if you get blacked out) and you should really take care.

concussions are fuckin sketchy man. its like a hidden injury. they're hard to tell if you have one and they will fuck up your skiing even if you feel fine.

Go to a doctor, don't go skiing, and whatever you do, DO NOT hit your head again because then you will get fucked over even more. Good luck sir

I'm coming out of a concussion right now, and trust me you know when you have one. I never threw up, but dizziness, confusion, headache are all signs. I would get to a hospital asap or at least see your doctor. I was told I couldn't do anything till I was 48 hours with no symptoms. This happened 2 weekends ago, and idk if I'll be able to ski this weekend, its been 2 weeks since I hit my head but I'm nervous that if i hit it again I could do some serious damage.

What would a doctor be able to do? arnt they going to say rest and take it easy? Not saying that to be an ass, im honestly wondering what they can do.

For one they can tell you how serious it actually is. I mean it wont do anything bad to see a doc but yea theyll probly tell u to rest and literally do nothing for a week or so.

From what you have explained you suffered a stage 3 concussion (worst type). You absolutely need to go get this checked out before you even think about stepping foot on skis again. If you suffer another concussion before this one heals you have a 50% chance of dying.

I find this hard to believe. I had no loss of consciousness, and only had partial amnesia for about 20 minutes. this seems more like the symptoms of a type 1 concussion...

Dude, if you couldn't remember what you did for 30 min then you did NOT have a stage 1 concussion. Def stage 2 or possibly 3. How do you know you didn't lose conciousness? You said you couldn't remember anything, and even losing conciousness for a few seconds is bad news. Go to a doctor, get an MRI probably. Hitting your head again soon means serious brain injury, early onset mental problems when you get older, possibly death. Trust me, there is a reason there is so much buzz in the NFL and football programs about the big deal on concussions. Don't be a dumbass and try to play it off, because you're not being a tough guy. I got knocked unconsious for 10 min and felt fine the next day, felt good enough to ski...but that would have been a dumbfuck idea. Go to a doctor, take a week of, don't be an idiot, and stop coming to DR NS for advice, then not heeding it when people tell you to go to a doctor. To me it sounds like you came here to be told by a bunch of people who don't have any real medical knowledge that "meh you're good to go."

my bro had a concussion and went to the ER right after it happened. they just gave him a coke and said not to ski for awhile.

don't fuck around with concussions, my schools varsity hockey teams (the girls varsity and boys varsity combined) have lost a total of 12 kids for a number of days/weeks throughout the season.

3 of which are now no longer able to play contact sports for the rest of their lives.

a girl I'm close with got a concussion three weeks ago, she got let out of the hospital last week, still hasn't returned to school yet and probably won't until after our spring break (starts march 7th goes through march 28th)

alright people i feel like i need to make some clarifications. first, after thinking about it, i only took one run after the fall and i remember the end, going to patrol, so the partial amnesia was really about 15 minutes top. I am quite positive i didnt go unconcious because i remember falling, laying there for a minute, getting up feeling rather dazed, then the next thing i remember is heading down to patrol, which i guess was one run later. secondly, that was 3 days ago now. Ski patrol checked me out that day and did a quick check right outside, gave me a few things to remember, asked me some questions about the fall, then saw if i still remembered the stuff. apple ball and pie. i still got it. They said that if i felt like i was going to be sick or had bad headaches, to come back. neither of these things happened so i figured i was alright to skip the doc and just take it easy, knowing i had a minor concussion and i had to avoid head trauma. Is this still wrong?

Something similar happened to me. I was skiing inbounds and nollied of a cornice type thing then blacked out The best I can figure is that I landed wrong and hit a tree( I was wearing a helmet thank god) I woke up not beaing able to breath choking on my bandana with a huge tree stain on my helmet. It took all my mental power just to get down to the bottom of the hill. I was having trouble skiing down an intermediate run that I normally shred switch. After going to the doctor I found I had a stage 1 concussion. If I had not been wearing a helmet I probably would have died. I was fine and skiing again in two weeks. Concussions are scary shit, get that checked out by a doctor.

I just had a concussion 2 weeks ago, doc said nothing that could give me another one within a week of symptoms clearing, then you're good to go. The thing is, going to the doc is a good idea because they will have you take an impact test. Even thought your symptoms are gone, they want a baseline, so when you get future concussions they have something to compare it to. You'd prob be fine not going to the doc and taking it easy, but seeing as you will prob have more, i'd get checked out, i mean what can it hurt?

a few years back when i was younger i was skiing some trail and apparently fell and hit my head on a rock, at least thats what my parents say. skied the rest of the day blacked out and blacked back in sometime between 4 and 5 pm (like i said, twas a few years back, don't remember when exactly). point is, the fall happened i think right after lunch (might have been before, again, don't remember) so i was blacked out for at least 3 hours. had a headache the rest of that day and i think skipped skiing the next day but other than that i was fine. but nausea and dizziness sounds like some serious business so yeah, go to a doctor, see what they say. better safe than sorry, right?

Concussions are very hard to diagnose...some guys can suffer a mild concussion yet show no symptoms at all.

I guarantee you have a concussion. Loss of consciousness, memory loss, and nausea should be pointing you directly to the doc. The fact that you do not have a headache is irrelevant. Some people get headaches, others don't. Some people will experience some form of vertigo, neck pain, feeling high, or inability to focus. Don't fuck around, get yourself into a doc.

So, i was skiing pow in bad visibility, pretty steep, didn't see the cat track that cut across the line, skied headfirst into a hardpacked cat track. Woke up in the hospital the next day, with 10 days complete memory loss. I literally had no recollection of the previous 10 days, including the crash. Apparently i wasn't unconscious, and i skied down and went to the hospital in my friends car. But when i woke up the next day, everything was wiped from my brain, pretty fucking sketchy! Long story short, wear you helmets, and get checked at the doctor if you have the symptoms of a concussion, as for example memory loss.

Retarded* (not going to correct the others, this was just to classic to pass up.) Now correct me if i'm wrong because since i hit my head i may have "herd" this wrong, but it seems like the general idea here is to go see a doctor to be told that i need to take it easy for a week or two. Its been 4 days since the hit, no symptoms. Never had any symptoms besides the memory loss and the slight nausea.. I'm no doctor, but this doesn't seem like the kind of concussion to cause brain hemorrhaging, so all i'm going to get from a doc is a lecture about being careful and monitoring my head for the next few weeks, which i am doing anyway.

Dude you did you even read my post which he was replying to? I said, "I'd go see a doctor" multiple times. It is true that they will tell him to rest up, and I also said why else it was a good idea to go-because of the impact testing. Sounded to me like he was appreciative for a legit response that contained the words "go to a doctor" more that once lol.

Like you said, you're no doctor. Which is interesting because you seem to know what doctors are going to tell you, which is an impressive skill. You're probably right that there's nothing wrong, but why chance it.
