we're doing this book in english, and i was wondering if it was influencial to anyone, or if its just lame.

yea good book, i like it cuz its about finding your own path... he meets buddha across the way so thats cool...

good book, im not much of a reader but this one really got me

Oh yea.. wow i feel like a moron.. but he does run into another philosopher who is supposedly being followed by a ton of people. I remember that he doesn't like this at all because he finds out he must follow his own path or something

yea i read it. its wierd cause he does meet buddha, but at the end he like also becomes him to. he takes the same paths a buddha and reaches nirvana. his meeting of the buddha is kind of a symbol i guess of what he is going to be like. i cant explain it well

haha he doesn't meet Buddha you fool. Buddha = Siddartha Guatama. He's a metaphor for the actual person.

But yes the book is written with a great authentic flair to it, the language is like Nectar in a Sieve if you've read that. The book is quite interesting, the end is especially powerful. Very enlightening read, quick too. Enjoy it.

First off if you knew some Buddhist history you'd know that Buddha's birth name is Siddartha Gautama. Hesse's character is based off him, they had identical early lives. However, Hesse took the liberty of designing the book's character's journey to enlightment; seeing as there is little documentation of that period of Siddartha's life. All we really know is how his life began, and that is what Hesse uses as a launching point. The journey is fictional.

Siddartha does not meet the actual Buddha, he meets an enlightened leader by the name of Buddha. However, his name is given to him to allude to the future of Siddartha and one of the book's messages. Enlightenment is not something attained on a universal path, it is an individual journey.

Catcher in the Rye. Read that one to. It was total garbage. That book was just a whinny little brat complain about how 'phony' people are. I found it extremely tedious and unfulfilling.

Yea, Siddhartha Guotama was Buddha, but yeah that whole story was kind of like one like figurative speech about taking your own path, but also a story of Buddhism and purification.

i ended up writing it. and there was no direction for this paper. we could write on whatever we wanted so i just ended up writing on how the book helped me realize what i believe in. super easy paper and my english teacher said she liked the topic.

definitely a good book though
