Helmet certifications?

So im planning on getting the giro shiv or smith maze and i noticed that some helmets such as the maze have more certifications than others such as the shiv. My question is do certifications actually make a difference in the safety of the helmet?

The main certification for snow sports is done by ASTM (for the USA). If it is ASTM certified, then you are good to go. Some helmets are certified for 4 season use (not just snow sports) so they will have more certifications to pass.

i recently put out a thread about the safest ski helmet there is, and i learned that all ski helmets have to pass the exact same safety test, but after that there is nothing else. So really there isnt a stadard way to tell which helmet protects you more

well the maze helmet has ASTM F 2040, CE EN 1077 certifications and the giro shiv only has               CE EN1077.                  Does that mean the one with two certifications is safer?

I doubt that is correct... in order for a helmet to be certified in the USA it has to pass the ASTM tests. CE is for Europe.

Weird because on the giro website http://www.giro.com/us_en/shiv-3860.html the only certification written for the shive is CE. I guess they're not as good as smith.

Not necessarily true, the giro could be just as good, but made in europe so it doesnt have USA certification, but it can still be sold.

USA = ASTM
Europe = CE

If a helmet is certified, it passes each test for that area.
