Ski Home Costs :)

Well I'm 20 years old now and really starting to bank some money and am hoping that in the next year or 2 I could possibly buy a house. Now I'm looking to buy In western Canada. I'm living at my parents right now right by Banff Alberta and would basically be interested in anything farther west. Interior BC is kind of the biggest dream for me if the price is right but i'm curious about prices elsewhere and if anyone else has any "dream" home locations that might interest me. Also feel free to post prices in the States as well since I know alot of members are from there and I'd be curious on the price differences. Thanks alot and plus K to anyone that gives a reasonable answer.

Also I'd rather spend under 150-200grand so I understand if it isn't right in a ski town but some sort of activity like sledding or something would be epic out my back door. Also feel free to just name cool slightly unheard of ski towns if you don't know the prices and I will try and do some reasearch on google.

Finally I hope this isn't a repost I googlebarred it to no luck and thanks again guys :)

Yea prices are pretty nutty, I'm definately looking for somewhere fairly remote and small. Some little hick town that gets lots of powder and has good backcountry

Golden has relatively cheap places. Don't know about Revy.
I'd think anything more west (Interior would be more expensive).

The places to go are Rossland and Nelson. No clue how those prices fair though.

Sun Peaks or Whistler. There's some pretty small half houses for about $200Gs in Creekside(Whistler) right by the husky.

but how the hell do you plan on purchasing a 150k home at 21? Are you gainfully employed? Have mad bank from a trust? clue me in on how this is gonna work. (i dont mean that in a condescending way) I mean it in a what the hell did I do wrong way.

also looking in the whistler area, except for an apartment for a year or two, but even that is expensive as fuck, guess ill have to keep looking.

Well if everything goes to plan I should hopefully be starting an electrical apprenticeship next winter. If It does go to plan and there isnt a massive work shortage all of a sudden I should easily be able to bank 20-25k in a couple years and then with the help of roomates to cover the mortgage which shouldnt be to hard to find in any ski town pay that shit off. thats a real quick rundown of it anyways.

Mason, Golden actually sounds pretty awesome had a great day skiing there this year so its definately on my list, after looking up some prices it's actually cheaper then I had orignally thought which is pretty cool.

Nelson Bc sounds pretty cool as well never been there before and definately want to check it out. Possibly going on a ski trip there next week actually depending on any new snowfall. But sounds pretty cool.

Sun Peaks, Pretty sweet place never skied there but the village has a pretty cool vibe to it when I was there in the summer. Plus the close access to Kamloops is pretty convienent.

Whistler, 200k for a small house, you have a link or anything I havn't been able to find anything nearly that cheap what soever. Not even really that keen on living in Whistler but that sounds so cheap. Plus I wouldnt mind a slightly bigger place so I can actually have a roomate at the start haha. Thanks a ton everybody for the ideas keeping me up all night looking stuff up :)

Hey another question. Havn't been able to find anything besides fort nelson which is to far away. Anyone know anything about the northern rockies above Jasper. Its out of the park so should be able to buy cheap land and I hear its prime ski touring area. Was wondering if anyone knew any good sites to look at real estate for up there. be so sick to own land with part of a mountain on it.  Set up my own personal little rope tow for my backyard ski resort wooo. Have to get a couple newschoolers to come keep me company of course haha go crazy up there all by myself.

Here's my two cents: I wouldn't buy a house now. Sure there are good prices, but unless you are going to be there for three years it isn't worth it. You have an apprenticeship which means your life is in flux. Wait until you are stable and know where you will live for the next five years. Sock away cash until then. If you get 25% saved up and have a stable income then a house will be a huge blessing. Find a cheap apartment while you are single and just ski and sock money away. I wish I had.

KAZLO BC man invest in a sled at the same time.  the mountains there are huge and untouched beutifull place+tons of chill locals,  youl make like 20 friends in a day

i can't imagine squamish is that expensive...

but i agree with what was said above. rent for now. owning a house will cost you a lot more than the initial payment. buy a house when you're ready to settle down but for now you can rent something nicer and in a better location and it'll be much more hassle free

haha you should just buy a house in bralorne bc for like 50k and then spend the rest on a ballin ass truck and sled...but yea renting would probably be a more practical option

Buying a house at the moment is maybe a good idea. The financial situation is still holding the prices at a low. If you have the Right set of hands and a good work ethic, you could by something that needs some renovation and "fixing up" then sell it off and earn a dollar or 2. I bought a house 2 years ago it was used and warn out - some old folks had lived there and gone to a nursing home, so everything was like pre 80's standard (but the neighborhood is good). I just ended my renovation and have increased the value of my home by 80.000$ if i would sell it. I cant use that money for a thing, as i intent to stay there with my wife and kids, but it gives you some sort of security in your financial situation to know that you are all good if things go wrong - just sell the shit. I have done this a couple of times and I now have to houses - my city house - and a holiday ski cabin in the Norwegian mountains a days drive away.
