She hates how I act like Skiings a lifestyle?

Okay fellas (and ladies) here the deal.

So Im talking to my girlfriend as I would everyother day and I get back from skiing and we start talking about our plans for the day to come.

I tell her that I am supposed to work (Im a ski instructor in MN) and she says "well thats okay Its just like any other day... All you do is ski."

Kind of surprised and a bit unsettled I say well yeah I absolutely love skiing, and this is what shocked me. She says and I quote her word for word "I hate how you act about skiing... Its like a lifestyle."

And at this point I just want to say well hell yeah its a lifestyle! But Im not the one to start an argument so I just wave it off.... What is this!

Am I crazy or are there people out there who dont think skiings a lifestyle?!

I'd say it sounds unreasonable to me considering it's your job... like you don't say to her "Fuck, you're going to Wendy's again, you love it more than you love meeeeee" No. It's a job. It just so happens that your job rocks and you love it, and you love the sport more than her. But whatever.

again, i kinda agree, kinda dissagree.

lifting for you is more related to being a life style because of the things you mentioned that you do outside of the gym, and the biggest part for me, is that you get payed for it. second part being what you eat. you MUST be extremely disciplined to make healthy choices.

however it is still a very loose description of lifestyle.

most people on this site dress like little fuckin homos cause the pros do, read mags, watch movies, possibly work at resorts, think about skiing all day all night. but does that make it a lifestyle?

a lifestyle to me, is someone or something that can not exist without that particular thing existing.
everything you do is for that thing, everything you NEED comes from that thing.

look at dictionary definitions of lifestyle. notice the definition changes from dictionary to dictionary??
thats cause the words itself is so fuckin loosy goose.

to many people it's a hobbie but most know it's a lifestyle ..personally i packed up my bags and moved to utah when I turned 18 and try to ski as much as possible...when you're hunting for snow in the hot summer months..you definitely know it's a lifestyle

So by your definition, what is a good example of a lifestyle? Eating? Breathing? Sleeping? I'm pretty sure that's about all I NEED to live, but it would be a fucking miserable life.

For me, and as CR said, it's family, friends, and skiing. Everything else is second to that. I don't know of anything that influences my life more than those three things, so yes, I consider skiing a lifestyle.

of course skiing is a lifestyle, how can you even argue its not? if you think about skiing all day, watch ski movies on the reg, and draw tiny skiers doing dubs over your class notes, then yes, skiing is part of how you live your life. and when you are actively trying to ski as much as possible on a day-to-day basis, then skiing is ingrained in the kind of person you are.

you only have skiing in your life? (apart from the top 1-2% of ams/pros) dont act like its more important than family, friends or a relationship.

thats immature and most people over 20 know that there are more important things in life.

of course its fun and everything but every other horseshit-extremesport is acting like it invented life completely new. so i bought myself a skateboard, i ski, i play (gridiron) football (in europe), i will have my master in finance next year, what the fuck is my lifestyle? do i have 5? 10?

live your life and do whatever makes you happy but dont try to "create" importance by saying its a lifestyle because its an empty phrase. do whatever you wanna do, no problem, but always remember what is more important.

your question of how many lifestyles you have is exactly on point.

really, if i were to consider skiing a life style for me, i would also have to consider hockey, being jew, playing duty etc etc.

i can see skiing being a life style if skiing IS your life. im gonna guess it is not for most people on this site, they just really really love it.

Well if skiing is your job then you do have to take it seriously, and I agree it is a lifestyle but I you ditch her all the time to go skiing when you're not working I guess I could see why she would get mad, just make some more time for her I guess I that means skiing 1 less day a week that's a sacrifice you're gonna have to make if she means that much to you

Hahaha so many butthurt kids in this thread. When you grow up, go to college, get a job, etc. you'll realize that skiing was simply an infatuation you had when you were little and there are far more important things in life than sliding down a hill on some snow.

yes. but if you love something so much, why not make that your job and have your life revolve around skiing.

just because the conventional American model citizen bullshit is telling you to get a job in some business and wear a suit all day and live a mediocre life doenst mean you have to.

why not take something youre passionate about, something that you love, and find a means of supporting yourself via this medium (skiing). im sure when its all said and done, if you truly love skiing, you will look back and have NO regrets on making skiing your life.

Anyone can do whatever the fuck they want in life, not be stuck in a room or a desk like you, you fucking idiot. Some people like being in the outdoors all the time and skiing. And I'm loling at "sliding down a HILL on some snow" That's probably because you're from Michigan, go ski some real MOUNTAINS that aren't hills, maybe you'll like skiing more.

...because most people don't want to live in a shack for the rest of their lives, living on ramen and sleeping on a couch, making pennies as a liftie just so they can ski. I'd rather realize what's important, get a sick job, make a fuck ton of money, and use it to take sick ass heli ski trips or spend a few weeks out west every year in a nice condo/house.

Bullshit.

I've gotten older and still love it. It's just that now I can't necessarily go every day, because I have other commitments that enable me to live and ski. If it was possible to ski every day and not have to work or worry about money, I would absolutely do that. I still consider skiing my lifestyle, it's just not my only priority.

I've skied plenty of REAL mountains on REAL skis, brooo, and hell yeah, it's a lot more fun than skiing in Michigan, but it's not worth being shit poor for. Going back to my original post...it's a hobby. Something to spend your money on when you have some free time or want to take a vacation.

there is a middle ground between couch bummin it eating ramen and making a "fuck ton of money" to pay for your heli-skiing expenses or aspen vacations.

there are so many ways to make a comfortable living within the ski industry. have any ideas- design a product. take dave lesh for example... couldn't make it as a pro skier so he starts first drop. love fd or not leme tell you he is killin it!!!!! and has created a business that allows him to make skiing his life.

this is just one example dude.

until you grow up, rejoin society, and start to responsibly prioritize the more important things than hobbies.


face it. skiing is a recreational activity that you take part in indefinitely. unless you're a professional that makes a career out of it, it's just playtime. it's like going to the outdoor hockey rink all day every day and saying HOCKEY IS MY LIFE. no, you just refuse to cut back and focus on more important things. you don't have to drop skiing altogether, but yeah, it isn't unreasonable to expect you to not make it the be all / end all of your existence.

maybe you'll realize that before it's too late, or maybe you'll be just another 40 year old ski bum that regrets that he didn't do anything with his life. who knows.

I have the same issues with my lady friend from time to time. Im older than 90 percent of ns'ers most likely at the age of 25 but I work a career and have a fair amount of money/goods as such.

For the longest time I wanted to live the "life" of a skier and realized that it is such a hard balance to come by if you live any sort of distance from the mountains while balancing a chequebook/career. I live 4 hours to the nearest mountains, which is much more fortunate than a portion of the forum. I would love nothing more than getting out to the mountains every chance i had but once you start taking on more of life's challenges financially and on personal levels naturally it becomes harder to take the time to get out there to the stomping yards.

You have some groms on this site who hit the mountains 4 times a week and regard me as a weekend warrior but if there was a role reverse and these people had to trek 4 hours one way to arrive at any sort of mountain... would they still get out 4 times a week? Not likely, and the chance drop significantly further if they have a career.

That being said, i still believe skiing is a lifestyle. Some people regard it as a hobby which is perfectly fine. You don't have to be balls deep in the culture in order to ski and if you look down at gapers for getting out there and having fun on the weekends... you have some real entitlement issues. Look at the ski touring crowd, that is pretty much a consistent lifestyle where as resort skiers may have a very watered down version of the skiing lifestyle.

Skiing is just like anything in life, It is 100 percent what you make of it. There is many people out there in the world who only work to support their hobby, and this is not wrong in any way you look at it. If this person chooses to live off ramen for a winter season in order to purchase some gear and some passes... right on, I dont see how this person's lifestyle "treads on you" in any way.

Lifestyle is just such a vague term that is loosely throw around. If skiing is your number 1 priority in life before having a girlfriend, make it happen... otherwise you have to compromise in certain areas which is not a bad thing either. Checks and balances, man.

I love skiing, and get out as much as i can each year but by no stretch is skiing my life, it is just a super great part of my life.

I don't know about lifestyle,but I am pursuing a degree in Ski business,I work as a ski tech at the local mountain,and I ski on my free time,yet I stil find time to play pick-up hockey,kayak,hike,bike,and climb. I wouldn't call any of these things lifestyles simply passions.

As far as your girlfriend goes, try doing something she wants to do one weekend instead of heading to the lifts.
