She hates how I act like Skiings a lifestyle?

Okay fellas (and ladies) here the deal.

So Im talking to my girlfriend as I would everyother day and I get back from skiing and we start talking about our plans for the day to come.

I tell her that I am supposed to work (Im a ski instructor in MN) and she says "well thats okay Its just like any other day... All you do is ski."

Kind of surprised and a bit unsettled I say well yeah I absolutely love skiing, and this is what shocked me. She says and I quote her word for word "I hate how you act about skiing... Its like a lifestyle."

And at this point I just want to say well hell yeah its a lifestyle! But Im not the one to start an argument so I just wave it off.... What is this!

Am I crazy or are there people out there who dont think skiings a lifestyle?!

Meh, skiing is a hobby. A lot of kids take it wayyyy too seriously. It's just something you go out and do for fun.

Do what makes you happy. If you're like annoyingly obsesseds with it I can see it pissing her off, because like anything if it gets old if its the only thing talked about.

It all depends on how far YOU take it. I love skiing, I get out 2-3 sometimes 4 times a week. I'd rather not say I live a "skiers" lifestyle. Just that I love to ski.

How do you take skiing seriously? I mean I understand taking a comp seriously but what does it even mean to take skiing seriously if you're not competing?

I mean I can understand taking being an instructor and taking it seriously but what's the point of skiing if you go out and get angry every time you fall because you're taking it seriously? I go out and have fun. The only time I can take a sport or a game seriously and still have fun is if it's a competition. Otherwise what's the point?

I'm never genuinely pissed off when I'm skiing. All the cliches hold true for me and I just enjoy every moment. Even when I'm cussing myself out I'm still having fun.

I can't talk to my girlfriend about skiing. She gets so mad. even if she asks me what i'm doing and i say "waxing my skis" she gets pissed. But when i get home from the hill she will ask "how was skiing?" as if she cares because i know as soon as i tell her something i thought was cool i did that day she just rolls her eyes at me..

Girls like well rounded guys she is probably subliminally trying to tell you are boring and you talk about it to much when she does see you and that she already doesn't see you as much as she would like as it is. If she doesn't love to ski and you live a "skiing lifestyle" than it probably won't work out. But if it's just your favorite thing to do and you want to do it all the time do it and tr to find a few things to do that you both enjoy and fill your time with her up with that. Any girlfriend worth a damn will respect you for being passionate about something but most girls will also get bored not seeing you and constantly having to listen about extreme sports

Unless you teach, are a ski bum, or are professional or something it isn't a lifestyle, its just something you do, sure you love it but it isn't your lifestyle don't try to act like it is.

watch an urban segment, guys loose their shit after like 3 fails trying to hit a rail, and im the best skier on the mountain so there is no fail, only fun.

i kinda agree with this.

just cause you really really really really love skiing, does not mean it is your lifestyle.
it is a hobby, for some a job.
i can understand being so in love with skiing that it consumes your life, but it is not your WHOLE life.

At least you have a passion, unlike a lot of people that don't have anything to live for. Seriously, look around you; do you see a lot of people that are passionate about anything? You're passionate about skiing which is a great way to spend time in nature, while getting some good exercise along with it. It's not harming you or anybody, it's not like you're have a hard drug lifestyle or that you're wasting your days in front of an LCD screen playing xbox.

Tell her to go watch the jersey shore with the rest of her generic friends.

Skiing is a lifestyle for me but it's not necessarily for everyone if you've found skiing is your passion you don't necessarily have to be a bum just do what makes you happy.

im not dissagreeing with anyone, i just want to understand what exactly the average NS'er considers to be lifestyle because this topic is so interesting to me.

Alright, I can understand obth viewpoints in ths thread (i.e. it is a lifetsyle, it is not a lifestyle).


Here's my take, which I believe is fairly accurate....



It IS a lifestyle if it governs what you do outside of the time that you are taking part in the activity. So for skiing, it you workout in ways that directly will benefit your skiing, and you dress the part of a skiier in ski brands and style and such, and are watching videos and reading up on skiing daily - I would say skiing is your lifestyle. You don't even have to compete, but if you are that passionate about it and it affects your behavior outside of the time you're physically on skis, then yes it's a lifestyle.


For example, I am extremely dedicated to working out and being in shape. I even work part time as a personal trainer because I enjoy helping people and teaching them. Working out is a lifestyle for me because even when I am not in the gym lifting, I eat in accordance with a very specific diet to keep body fat % and muscular development etc etc etc all in check. Often times you'll find me in workout related clothing....I'm always researching and reading up on new fitness and nutrition articles...watching videos for new ideas and to perfect my form on complex lifts, all that shit. I compete as well in crossfit competitions...so for me it's absolutely a lifestyle.
