did you hit a rock and dent it in? If it is just cracked but not dented, it's probably best to just leave it. Just run the file over it so it doesn't snag on anything.
If it's dented though you will have to cut a section of your base out (it's probably messed up anyhow). Then you will have to cut out a section of the edge using a handheld grinder. Then cut out a section of new edge that fits perfectly. Then you have to drill small holes by the tabs and put in small screws by the tabs, don't overtighten. Then grind the screwheads off and replace the base material. Finally file it down until it is all even.
notice how this method is gonna leave an edge with two cracks in it instead of one, so only necessary when the edge is cracked and dented in.
don't worry about it then. If it is snagging badly then you can try to repair it but honestly it's probably not worth it especially if it is a park ski (which I assume it is if you are hitting rails with them).
I learned how to do it from a guy at the ski shop but there is a video on youtube somewhere that explains the whole process similarly.
It's one of those things that you only would want to do on a pair of skis you intend to have for a long time. Like you wouldn't spend hours perfectly fixing a ding on a shortboard that you will probably mess up again really soon but you would for your longboard that will last you decades.
