Psychology help

can someone explain to me (in the simplest terms possible please) the difference between the humanistic perspective and social cognitive perspective of personality?

i've read the definitions of the terms over and over but it's just not clicking for me

i have a test tomorrow and those two perspectives are stumping me

any help is appreciated!

i probably could have told you that 2 years ago when i had electives in developmental psychology, butttt.. like all great students, i cram, regurgitate, then forget.

humanistic= growth potential directed by current environment and the importance of having our needs for love and acceptance satisfied. social cognitive perspective emphasizes the interaction of our traits with our situations. Source: psych 201 textbook. In other words, the humanistic perspective focuses on the environment effects one's mental state plus a bunch of hippy feel good stuff and the social-cognitive perspective says that behavior= traits+environment

I can't remember the names of the Psychologists involved with each theory or specifics, but I am pretty sure that humanistic theory assumes all people to be inherently good, and the social cognitive theory assumes all people to be a product of their environment.

If there was ever a super super easy topic to google or open your textbook to though, this psych 101 stuff would have to be it.

That might still be confusing. Third time's the charm: The humanistic perspective says that one's behavior is largely a consequence of their immediate environment and that for a person to reach their growth potential they need the right kind of environment which includes love and acceptance. The social-cognitive perspective states that behavior is the result of the ways in which one's traits interact with one's environment. The main difference is that the humanistic perspective is environment+sense of love and acceptance=behavior and the social cognitive perspective is environment+traits=behavior

Social cognitive approach- focuses on how social interactions/experiences influence cognitive development. Basically, social cognitive psychologists explain that learning occurs through the modeling of others and interactions with oneself and their social environment.

Humanistic approach- The study of how humans come into the world inherently good. It's a holistic approach to psychology in that it addresses biology/physiology, social, cognitive, etc.  Check out the works of Carl Rogers or Maslow's pyramid of hierachal needs. If your in Psych 101, those are what your prof will probably ask you about.

haha for someone with a bachelor's degree in psychology, i feel like i should know this.

cognitive psychology focuses on metal processes and social psych involves environmental factors which determine behavior. so a Social Cognitive perspective would probably say that personality is derived primarily from outside forces interacting with ones mental constructs.

humanistic perspective, however, i have no idea. all i remember is malov, or whatever, was a supporter of this perspective

Maslow. Famous for formulating the "hierarchy of needs."

Humanistic psychology is basically the idea that all people are inherently good, and our behavior is the product of our needs (listed above) being fulfilled.

in simple terms, the social cognitive perspective focuses on how people react and adapt to their environment. the humanistic perspective focuses on free will and general human nature.
