2012 was a big year for Audemars Piguet - and if you were one of the 175 people who joined us in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak in NY, you know how seriously they are taking it.
This year's SIHH saw several big(ish) announcements - the introduction of the 15400 Royal Oak at 41mm, the new vintage-inpsired dial on the Jumbo, the intro of a super cool ultra-thin tourbillon, and even a ceramic Offshore diver - but the most impressive watch of the 2012 AP SIHH collection, we've yet to show you in detail. We are talking about the Audemars Piguet Openworked Extra-Thin Royal Oak Tourbillon. It is just sick.
http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/2012/5/29/hands-on-with-the-audemars-piguet-openworked-extra-thin-roya.htmlMade of 950 platinum in a 41mm case, this limited edition openworked tourbillon shows you why AP is, among real watch collectors, so revered. It's not because of those Offshores you see at every turn when you're down in Miami (though the development of the Offshore 20 years ago is considered a monumental accomplishment and the subsequent use of materials in the line is highly regarded) it's because of absolutely superb movement design and finishing like you see in this stunning new tourbillon. Within the brand new AP Caliber 2924, there are over 100 polished angles. 100. On theinside of the movement.
The caliber is completley hand finished and shows the power reserve on the rear. It is, quite honestly, just an incredible example of watchmaking and worth seeking out if not to purchase, just to view as a lover of mechanical watchmaking. The Openworked Extra-Thin Royal Oak Tourbillon will be made in only 40 pieces worldwide and retail for $353,600. More details can be found here.
Fucking love watches. I'm a broke kid so I only have one for now, but I plan on having some really good ones in the future. Last year I purchased my first watch, an Emporio Armani AR-5894 and I love it to death. Wear it ever day to school and get complements all the time.
Furthermore, I've never like leather straps for some reason. I prefer metal.
My nicest watch is a Movado.
Chillin watch is a Diesel.
