The ride up

Why is it people are so damn sheepish about who they sit on the chair with?
I ride solo much of the time, and it is a singles duty to hop on the lift with doubles, and triples in order to maximize efficiency in the line.
Countless times I'll be under the impression that I will be riding with a group of people, we slide up and prep for the next chair to come. As I go for the next chair, no one follows.
They just choose to make me look like the asshole taking up the entire chair.
Why do people do this? Do they think I am going to eavesdrop on their day plan or some shit?
Also:
Being a "newschooler" I often find that I am the one who ALWAYS has to initiate conversation.
If it wasn't for me trying to break the tension by saying things like "Hey havin fun?" or "Enjoying the snow out there?" we would undoubtedly ride up in complete awkward silence.
Some fucking small talk with a stranger isn't going to kill you... I don't care if it is a short lived conversation, just a few pleasantries and we're good to go.

Thoughts? This happen to you guys?

It is very polite. It is also right to at the very least, acknowledge them.
I think I do it because a lot of the old timers and people with their younger kids expect us to say nothing and be douche bags.
Hopefully I have changed the opinions of someone out there.
I gotta say though, I'm not a man of the people. Keeping up conversations is mentally exhausting for me.
Maybe I do it for myself. Force me to interact with strangers.

he had is coming. i asked him how his day was. and he then looked at me and was like fuck off you fag
and laughed and put his headphones on. and for some reason that pissed me off .. so when i got off the chairift i hipchecked him into the chair.

sorry just cause i dicked a guy once does not make me a douche. i felt like he had it coming.

now as long as you were not a fuck to me when i was trying to start something up we would have no problem.
and there is no way you could catch up with me. and i feel pretty competent that i could hold my own.

but that is not what i am about. respect every one fear no one.

This! Last weekend I was riding up with these two race trolls (girls) they were talking about how good they look in the race hear and why more people should wear them more...and they were completely serious

I ride solo all the time and Ive found the most enjoyable lift rides are when I ski instructer pairs you up with a 4 year old. Great conversations all the time.

I always love talking to little kids on the lift. They're always so nice and super stoked. You can tell when they're looking at you they're thinking "woah he's a big kid".
I always try to ask them how old they are, and how long they've been skiing for and how awesome it is and stuff. I love seeing little kids out there having fun because I know they'll probably be like me when they grow up and just love skiing, and want to go every damn day! Haha

I always have this problem. I ride solo a lot, and more then half of the time when I'm waiting in the lift line I end up going on a chair by myself. The people I was supposed to ride with just let me go and wait for the next lift. And then when I'm actually on a lift with someone, they will never start the conversation. Not even a little bit of small talk..
